serious engine problems

Becca, 08/21/2022

Less than 60 days after buying the car the transmission slips and now my check engine light flashes, making it not drivable. It has already been taken to Kia once and I was told it needed a “software update”. They give it back and 2 days later we’re right back where we started. This has been a nightmare and I will never buy a Kia again.

Major Safety Issues with New 2023 Kia Sportage

Matt Anderson, 06/19/2023
2023 Kia Sportage X-Line 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl 8A)

I bought a new 2023 Kia Sportage in October 2022. With only 5,127 miles on the car, there have already been two recalls and we have a major issue that the service center near us has been working on for two weeks. Working with Kia’s techs and the US Tech Line has been atrocious. For the past few months, we’ve had an issue with the car where it intermittently decides that the buttons for the Infotainment will not work, the rear view camera will not work, the AC/heat will not work, the defoggers will not work, and the lane assist and side collision warning system will not work. The car has been to the dealership twice for this issue (once on May 19th and the second time on June 5th… today is June 19th and it’s still in the shop for that second visit). The dealership has not been able to figure out the issue and the Tech Line has taken 3-5 days to respond to the dealership to troubleshoot the issue each time that the dealership contacts the Kia Tech Line. I have not been able to get updates from the dealership or through the Kia Service number and they refuse to provide me with a loaner vehicle or an expected completion date for the work being performed. Stay away from buying a Kia. They tout how great the warranty is, but warranty repairs have been slow and Kia will not provide updates.

Shaking Don’t buy

I’m so disappointed. After owning a VW suv for 3 years (which was perfect) but we decided to buy something different. So we looked at Kia. We wanted a 2023 but there was only one dealer within 30 miles that had 1 we drove it & loved the style amenities & price. We thought that the Kia is supposed to be great quality & price, but we never owned a Kia and hoped it would be fine. Unfortunately, it’s been a nightmare. We purchased it 2 months ago and it’s been in the shop ever since! We discovered that it was shaking so bad you could feel it in the wheel & seats! Thinking it could be a safety issue we brought it right back. I was hoping it was an easy fix, perhaps the tires weren’t balanced properly or the rim was messed up. It wasn’t any of that. The service manager is great and as frustrated as I am, but he can’t figure out what’s wrong. Like others on here, he’s waiting for the Kia field rep to come in to solve the problem. Kia has been absolutely horrible in working with us. After they created a claim nothing has happened, other than the obligatory “we will let you know when we have an answer”. Really? It’s a 2023 & new style, so you would think that Kia would be all over it due to bad reviews. At this point I just want our money back, so we can be done with Kia. BTW - what they did discover was every new 2023 has the same issue and no fix is in sight. So make a different choice because this isn’t normal.

Brand new car in the shop for a month and counting

Replace my car, 09/10/2022

If there was a way to give this car a big fat zero stars, I would. Had it for 6 weeks and when my daughter was driving it on the freeway, it started decelarating to 30 mph! An incredibly dangerous scenario. We brought it in to the dealership and they checked the codes. They said nothing showed up and that we needed to put a few more miles on it before they could tell whats wrong. Well, we listened to them and took it back. Later that night, 45 minutes from home, it happened again. Called Kia roadside service and they estimated a 120-150 minute wait! On a dark deserted road! Thankfully, I kept my AAA membership, even after Kia blew hot smoke up my a** to get their roadside because it was so great, blah blah blah. They were there in less than an hour and I didn't even have to wait with the car. This time the new car was towed back to the dealership! 1 month later, lots of phone calls, renting cars which they will only partially cover...$44/day! Have they seen the rental prices lately?? Just spoke with them and they still have no idea. Time to do the right thing and replace this lemon. I am done!!

Better than i expected.

This SUV is much better than i expected. It has an amazing amount of tech. and safety features for this price range including lane departure, collision avoidance, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic collision avoidance... It also has heated synthetic leather seats, automatic windshield wipers, automatic headlight dimming, smart key, and a huge touchscreen. There is more interior room than i expected, soft ride and quiet interior. There are a few minor things i would have liked to have such as auto dimming rear view mirror and home link garage door openers but not a deal breaker. I don't understand the complaints about not enough power? I don't pull a camper or race with it so it seems to have enough power to do what it was designed for and i have been getting between 36-38 MPG on my trip to work (mostly highway). This should definitely be on the list of test drives for anyone looking for a mid sized SUV. Update: After 6 months of waiting for Kia to send me the "Loss of Confidence" rebate that was promised to a customer who dealt with the engine failure and purchased another Kia i have decided that Kia has the worst customer service of any car company currently selling in the US. I have called multiple times and have gotten the same answer for the last 4 month which is that my Claim manager has left the department and my case if being re-assigned. I was also told that there is no number that can be given out to expedite this process so basically there is nothing i can do but wait. I would like to know if anyone has received this rebate or if it isn't a legit program and i have been lied to????

Bought the 2023 Kia Sportage with less than 40 miles on it. The dealership was great and we love the vehicle. I had it for less than 2 weeks (1,300 miles) when the engine/transmission made an awful noise and threw a transmission error code. The dealership still has the vehicle trying to figure out how to fix it, but because it’s so new they have to wait for guidance from the engineers in California, we live on the other side of the country. This has been a frustrating process. I would stay clear until Kia works out all their issues with this new design.

Great Car with Poor Acceleration

There are a lot of things to like about this car. The ride, the interior, the quietness, the smooth shifting transmission, the interior room and the array of technical features. I also use the stop/start feature which works very well compared with Toyota and Subaru vehicles I owned where the entire car shook every time the engine turned off or on. The function on the Sportage is very quiet and hardly noticeable. The exterior looks are unique. You either like it or you don't. I like and have even grown to like the circular saw-like rims on my SX Prestige. Now for the bad. The acceleration in normal and smart modes is abysmal. You push the pedal, immediate hesitation then 2 or 3 seconds later it kicks in, very mildly. However, I discovered in sport mode acceleration is acceptable. Other than that, there are no other negatives I can name. I do like the car but have to remember to put it in sport mode when at a stop light or sign. Update; I have now had the car for over 6 months. I keep getting the "Check active air flap system" warning message and also a check engine message that says there may an issue with my powertrain. I brought it to the dealer after waiting over two weeks for an appointment, and they cleared the error codes and found nothing wrong. Here it is a few months later and the same error codes continue to appear. I think the sensors are too sensitive or the techs at the dealer don't have a clue.

I just bought this car last month, and when I am driving on the highway, the car shakes greatly. I had to take the car into the dealership three times before they were finally were able to figure out that it was a bad transfer case. Now my car is at the dealership for a week while I wait for it to be repaired.

2023 Sportage dashboard warning lights

Hate it. The first time I took to dealership for problems it only had 400 miles. They tried resetting the computer system. The last time was July 30th and didn't get it back until Sept 4th. Trying to get them to reimburse for rental, after submitting receipts I'm told it could take up to six weeks to hear anything. To make matters worse 2 days later all the warning lights are on, sometimes I have wait after starting vehicle to get it out of park. Also when driving speed goes up and down ,example the other day I was going forty it showed zero then forty then zero as I driving down the road. Kia dealership had horrible customer service and I m now filling out paperwork for lemon law.

If you buy the lower levels of Sportage your going to get the lower levels of Sportage. I bought the X-pro Prestige which is everything you can get on it and it has been great to me. When you buy it you have to know what your buying and research it. I had a BMW that did 0-60 in 4.5 seconds and 155 mph. So no I’m not going to complain about the acceleration since I knew what it was going to be. The tech on the car for the price is crazy. Comfort is very good on longer trips and the ride quality is good. I would buy again. It’s a great vehicle in this class. UPDATE: There was a recall concerning the wiring harness to the transmission. Apparently it could come loose and send conflicting signals to the transmission like forward / back ( a good way to destroy your power train). I’ve had mine for a little over a year now and drove it up and down the east coast and in temperatures as low as -14 F and it’s been wonderful.

My daughter barely put 2500 miles on her car and has had to put in 2 qts of oil. Only strange thing is that there is no oil leaks left underneath the vehicle. The car will not start when it is short a qt. We've taken her car back to the dealership for them to keep her car for a wk 1/2 and find nothing. They said to drive it another 1000 miles and take it back to the dealership to check to see if any oil was lost. Well, we did and of course no issues. 1361 miles later light has already came back on and have to take it back to the dealership. This has been a very inconvenient issue especially with a brand new car. Sad part is that this is my daughters first vehicle and it's trash. Would not recommend ever buying another KIA again. Cheaply priced for a reason apparently.

I purchased brand new 25 miles on it absolutely loved. Car is absolutely beautiful inside and out drove it for 2 weeks and EPB light came on out of know where didn’t think anything of it until I was on the freeway and my car braked it’s self out of no where. I brought it to my local Kia they told me they needed my car for 2 weeks to wait for the part to come from overseas. Like WFT this car is brand new anyway they tell me I can come pick up my car which I was mind blown that they wanted me to drive my unsafe car. They offered me a rental car the cheapest car they could give wouldn’t accommodate my family size. This whole process has been a nightmare

I have been a Kia owner since 2005 the first Sportage redesign came out. I had that vehicle for 15 years and 215,000 miles before I upgraded for the 2020 Sportage S I recently got the new 2023 Sportage EX and it is the best Sportage yet. I also have 2 2021 Souls at home my wife's and son. I have enjoyed every Kia I have owned and had zero mechanical issues. Just routine maintenance. The new Sportage is not just bigger but also beautifully enhanced interior and materials. The infotainment system is great and easy to use. I highly recommend this vehicle to anyone looking for something different and better than most of the competition.

I have the SX Prestige model. I waited 16 weeks for delivery, which is what my dealer told me to expect. I have a Sorento and also had a Soul. My Kia cars have been excellent in every way. I chose the Wolf Gray color. Appreciation for auto looks and color preferences are in the eye of the beholder. As for me, the design and appearance of this Sportage is outstanding. I prefer it among all SUVs, even those far pricier. I had never liked the appearance of the Sportage until this totally new 2023 model came out. The car is inch for inch the same size as my 2011 Sorento, with a far better ride and much more technology. The Prestige has almost every piece of technology available on cars these days. My biggest worry was learning how to use it. I did read and absorb the manual, but just driving the car was the most helpful as most all it's technology is intuitive. Once I learned I could trust the technology, driving the car has been a dream. While some raters have issues with the pickup with the base engine, I did not find that an issue. The 8 speed transmission always seems to provide the power I need when I need it. I get so many looks and compliments on this car. Folks believe it is a customized Sorento. They are stunned when they learn it is a Sportage. My passenger guests have been totally impressed with the ride quality, quiet and handsome interior. I have had the car for almost 18 months. I find a new delight in the car every drive I make. I have owned 3 Kias and my family has owned 6. All from the same Kia Dealer. You just cannot find a greater value car...and one that leads in design, reliability, and overall quality. Update 10/13/2023 My car developed myriads of computer related problems. The hard to find source was a loose nut on the battery ground cable. My car was impounded 12 weeks waiting on a replacement cable. KIA provided a car for the duration. While frustrating, I have my car back now and it is running perfectly. Parts supply is a real issue, but overall my dealer and KIA were supportive and solved the unique problem. Sometimes you are just the victim of statistical probabilities...that the one in a thousand will be you. That was me. I remain loyal to Kia and my Dealer (Jim Butler Kia, Chesterfield, MO) . After all it won't happen again for my next 999 purchases.

I try not to drive my new too hard, but I can’t seem to get a better mpg average than 15.4. That seems really low for a car that says it should get 23 city/ 28 Hwy. I have had the car back at the dealership 3 times since I bought it. The auto start /stop won’t work. The 2023 Kia Sportage is very under powered. The engine revs so high when you accelerate from a stand still. The rpm’s are at 4k before you hit 20 mph.

Acceleration is not there Pros 1. LED Low and High beams 2. Lots of tech things for a relatively low price tag 3. Leather and USB ports everywhere 4. Spacious Weird 1. Vehicle is rated at 32 MPG highway. How am I getting 38MPG (Mostly highway + city) ??? 2. From time to time car refuses to lock the doors

6000 miles on new Sportage engine needs replaced

Do NOT buy a 2023 Kia Sportage . I did and it was a big mistake!! I have had it since the end of April and the engine is already going to have to be replaced at 6,000 miles. It was knocking so badly it sounded as if the engine was going to fly out of the vehicle. The worst part is Kia has had my vehicle and it has been a week , no word as to what they are going to do about it , or we are sorry or we will make things right. Terrible Customer Service! My 1st Kia and my last!! Save your self a tone of heartache and trouble and buy a Toyota! Wish I had of. The reason they have a long warranty is because you are going to need it.

This is a car that is a complete head turner with never like before designs both inside and out. I love my new sportage sx prestige and it comes equipped with everything you would want (i would have liked a HUD though!!!). The 12.3 inch panaromic screen looks futuristic, the seats are extremely comfortable and the rear seats which are reclinable and very very spacious. What i do not like about this though is its engine performance. The engine is a bit sluggish to take off, but most drivers would fall for the inside comfort that it offers (soundless posh cabin) and would take that any day over the engine performance. It drives similar to the Tucson. If you need more power look elsewhere. If you love futuristic design and tech this is the car for you.

Warnings come on repeatedly coverting tachometer. Bought new, has 10k miles. Took it in to have it repaired--they had it for two weeks and the california folks could never figure it out. Had it at dealer for two weeks and Kia could not sort it out so back driving it with the warning indicator warning me of uneven road, slippery road and going the wrong way... They can;t even disable. Very disappointing. Its a pit pokey--a turbo would be nice.... or a recommended chip that will not void warranty.

I had gotten my 2023 Kia sportage 9/22. I don’t even have 6,000 miles on it and it seems like it lags when driving. I also tried to use my A/C this summer and it doesn’t even get cold. The air stays hot. It’s been at the dealership for the air conditioning for 2 weeks now and still waiting for Kia to figure out what’s wrong with it. The manufacturer was contacted twice already for solutions and the problem isn’t resolved.

What a great compact SUV. The interior comfort and style is off the charts. The gas mileage is superb (I have the FWD version). I have driven many other SUVs as my daily driver (BMW X1, Jeep Wrangler, Ford Edge, Ford Bronco Sport, Ford Escape to name the most recent) and this one tops them all. The acceleration is acceptable, the tech and safety features are excellent, the cargo space is very large. I've had it for 2600 miles and just over a month, and I couldn't be happier. Zero issues. Living in Florida, having ventilated seats in a vehicle with this price is a huge bonus. UPDATE: In August 2022 I saw a new Sportage in a parking lot, and was very intrigued. Read reviews and thought it was worth a test drive. Loved the car on the lot but was nervous about the comments of sluggish engine performance. I drove the SX Prestige and thought it was fine (it’s my daily driver and not a race car), and drove the AWD X-Line. The X-Line’s acceleration and overall ride quality was noticeably worse which I think accounts for the low review on Edmunds. I bought it and couldn’t be happier. After 6 months and 9,000 miles, it was totaled in an accident (T boned by the other driver). Fortunately we had only minor head bump type injuries. Immediately went back to the dealer looking for the exact replacement (I absolutely wanted the SX Prestige in Wolf Gray with Carmine Red interior) and none available. Switched to a VW Taos. Very highly rated by Edmunds, and a great car. In the meantime we traded in my wife’s Land Rover Defender for a Genesis GV70. What a fantastic luxury vehicle. Best we’ve ever owned. Very highly rated by all the car mags. After two months and two 1000 mile trips, we both realized that the Kia Sportage had very similar ride comfort and interior features and technology. I decided then that I would trade the VW in on a new Sportage as soon as I could find one. In just a few weeks I found an exact replacement of my original and got a decent trade in for the Taos. I’m now again a very happy owner of a Kia Sportage SX Prestige. I get lots of compliments at the gas station, great gas mileage, a comfortable, quiet ride, fantastic safety features, and a great interior with plenty of cargo space. So I can’t go from zero to 60 in three seconds. It gets me on I95 in Florida with no issues at all and I can use the left lane just like the Porsches and Teslas and any high performance car.

Folks, it's all about the technology, this is the safest car on the road and may even make car of the year. Super ride, super roomy, extra-large trunk, safety cameras and alerts galore. UPDATE: Before buying I looked at all 2023's Hondas, CRVs, Toyota Rav 4 and selected Kia because of the safety features, simply amazing technology. Has cameras galore, car almost drives itself with automatic slow down and stopping and lane centering. Have over 20,000 flawless miles after 9 months of ownership. And huge trunk space and good gas mileage, average 34 on freeway and around town about 26.

The two driver manuals are an inch thick and poorly designed (graphically), and poorly indexed so it's [non-permissible content removed] to figure out what each elontric feature (and beep) does. But at 900 miles it's quite comfortable, and I'm not in a race car so the slightly acceleration doesn't bother me. <br>

Rode tested the 2023 Kia Sportage xline compact suv hybrid. This is the best pick for better performance and good gas mileage, the plug in hybrid is too expensive.ride and handling are good seats are soft and somewhat supportive but I do not know about long drive comfort.overall if prices come down this could be a car to test.

Liked the exterior and interior styling. Navigation worked well and the screen was crisp and sharp. After 2 1/2 months there was a clunking sound in the rear of the vehicle slowing down below 20 mph and then a squeaking sound coming from the right front cowl of the vehicle. I had it in 3 times to the dealership and after having it a total of 8 days, it squeaked worse than when I first took it in. They said the suspension was fine, but they "tweaked" the structure of the vehicle. My first Kia and my last. I traded it for a Tuscon. No one wants to have friends or family ride in a brand-new vehicle that sounds like it's 10 years old with 200,000 miles on it.

Rented this car for an extended 3400 mile trip. Seats grew very uncomfortable. AC was marginal the complete trip. Dashboard electronics made themselves disappear along with AC while on the interstate. Had to come to a complete stop, turn off the car and restart. Ignition switch? Acceleration was a mixed bag. Sometimes was peppy, other time frustratingly slow. The car had just over 30K. DID get 32 MPG average!

When I first saw the redesign I was in love. The new KIAs have absolutely knocked it out the ball park when it comes to design and aesthetic. The selling point for me on this car was the large cargo space and rear seat space for passengers. The touchscreen is chef’s kiss. Some things I wish it had were sunglasses holder, larger arm rest storage or storage underneath the gear shift for purse or other things. I also wish the dual screen feature would work with Apple/android car play so I could have navigation and music showing at the same time. Or be able to show the map and music on the dash would be nice too. The acceleration is horrible, almost to the point where it makes the pros not worth it.

I bought the 2023 Sportage EX hybrid. It drives like a dream but am having some issues. I pulled out of a parking spot and pulled onto a busy road when the car just wouldn't move, foot on the gas but not going anywhere. I pulled over, turned it off and back on it was fine. Hoping it's just a one off but not hopefule. The synch system when plugged in whith an apple cord, constantly gets disconnected to apple play, while I'm on the phone or trying to see directions from Waze and resets it so I have to put the directions in again. I am wondering if anyone else is experiencing this?

Thought it would be good for reliability.. ok. Haven't got that far yet. Seats are hard and uncomfortable. Thought I might take it on long road trips..NOT.. Sound systems is marginal.. still need a cable to connect to Apple CarPlay..what??? Pretty gutless too.. Sorry..$50,000 later..I trade-in a 350SL Benz..Diesel.. and Tahoe LT for this. Thought it had some class.. expensive runabout.. My bad..maybe ok for the right purpose, but not what I was hoping for..Sorry.

Engine and Transmission Blew After 7 Months

Bought a brand-new 2023 Kia SPORTAGE. My Sportage broke after 7 months. The car is covered under warranty, but my car has been at the dealer for over 16 days and the parts have not even been ordered yet. They gave me a tiny car that my mother and brother cannot even fit into. I asked to have my payment waved until the Sportage was fixed, but they told me they could not do anything. After explaining that they did not give me a comparable rental car they sent me to another member of customer service who told me they could not do anything. I spent two hours on the phone today and nothing was resolved. They keep telling me they don't know how long it will be until my Sportage is fixed. In the meantime, I am trying to move four hours away and am waiting on my Sportage to move my last items. I’m hoping that the Sportage will be ready before my lease ends, or I will need to spend more money out of pocket to rent a moving van. They keep blowing me off when I ask to be reimbursed for the tow truck. Be careful before considering a Kia. Their cars don’t seem to be built to last.

I had a 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe and I've got to say, this feels like a full size SUV. It's comfortable, it's quiet and the tech and styling is really great! The HK radio is nice and with a software update, it's even nicer. Acceleration is predictable, but it's not a sports SUV. Overall I've been very happy with this purchase.

Almost did not buy the 2023 sportage because of negative reviews, but am super happy I did not walk away. Nice quiet, smooth ride. Excellent gas milage when using cruise control. Got 40 mpg on a 150 mile trip driving route 1 and 95 in Delaware. All the bells and whistles work great. Now have 1000 miles on the car with no complaints. The acceleration is fine, I don't want a sports car. The cargo space is large and the car feels roomy and spacious for a small SUV. The passenger seat sits low and does not raise on the model I have. Would be nice to be able to raise the seat.

NEVER GET THIS CAR

Revised: 1. Within the first three months of ownership, my driver's side mirror was stolen. I realized this when I explored replacement options, only to find out how expensive and evidently coveted these mirrors are. While I acknowledge that Kia isn't to blame for the theft, it's an unusual occurrence for me and quite unsettling. 2. I found the transmission's shifting to be unsatisfactory; it often felt like it was slipping and failed to shift when necessary. 3. The screens in the car were frequently malfunctioning, flickering on and off repeatedly. 4. Around the 8,000-mile mark, numerous electrical malfunctions started cropping up. For instance, the car wouldn't lock after long drives, requiring multiple restarts to rectify the issue. 5. It's disconcerting to encounter numerous recalls on a brand-new car; it seems inappropriate for such issues to arise so soon after purchase. 6. Despite being in "sport" mode, the car lacked any semblance of sportiness or acceleration. It failed to pick up speed adequately, rendering the mode essentially useless. 7. The collision light would sporadically illuminate, sometimes indicating that it was "not enabled," leaving me to question its reliability and purpose. 8. The car's safety features occasionally posed risks to the driver. In one instance, during a lane change as another vehicle pulled out in front, the car abruptly slammed on the brakes, nearly causing a rear-end collision as I found myself stopped in the middle of the road. 9. The blind-spot detection system provided an excessive warning distance, resulting in constant beeping even when there was ample space behind me. 10. The rain-detecting wipers were highly erratic, either moving at a snail's pace or scraping aggressively against the windshield, with no middle ground. In terms of comfort and aesthetics, sitting in the car was indeed a luxurious experience. The seats were comfortable, and the interior spaciousness was exceptional. However, the functionality of the car left much to be desired. The litany of issues was so overwhelming that I was eager to part ways with it and erase it from my memory.

Had not considered a Kia since I have always had Toyota SUVs. The local Toyota dealer treated us very poorly and my wife said she saw a new Sportage and we should at least drive one. Our treatment at the Kia Dealership was great, we drove and really liked the Sportage SX Prestige FWD. We bought it, pleased with the deal and are loving it. I feel it drives better than the Rav 4 and the Electronics are simply stunning. Power is fine for us and mileage is better than I expected with highway hovering around 35 mpg. So far, great experience.

I drove a 2014 Kia Forte, 2017 Kia Sportage LX, and 2019 Niro LX Hybrid before. I grew up with my dad having a Kia Carnival. I have to say that Kia always impresses me each year and has always been part of my life. But this year in particular they really did their job. Not only was the dealership I went to really helpful in showing me and explaining the new changes with the new Sportage, but the car itself also felt surreal. I never expected an engine upgrade, bigger wheels, nice soft seats with heating, and many more. It almost felt as if I was driving a well-known luxury-brand car. With the value that Kia gives, you already know you won't be wasting extra thousands of dollars, instead, you will be getting exactly what you paid for and more. This is a perfect car for reliability, extra space if you need it, as well as comfort. If you are considering 2023 Kia Sportage and unsure if this is for you, I highly recommend going out to your local Kia dealership, test driving if you can, and seeing it for yourself.

The vehicle drives alright, not fast , but I understand that it's not a sports car. Gas mileage is horrible on the 2.5. The tires are the worst I have ever had in a car. Absolutely garbage! Then the exterior plastics are made so cheap. After I washed the car the plastics look like they are 15 years old. I have to detail it so it doesn't look so bad. It does drive somewhat smooth with minimal road noise. The interior space is pretty good for a small car. My grandma likes it, I don't
