2021 Kia Sorento Hybrid Review

  • Impressive number of standard and optional features
  • Lots of second- and third-row legroom for the class
  • Sharp-looking and easy-to-use infotainment system
  • Not so compact anymore
  • All-wheel drive is unavailable
  • New hybrid powertrain for the redesigned Sorento
  • Gets an EPA-estimated 37 mpg combined
  • More interior room and new technology features
  • Part of the fourth Sorento generation redesigned for 2021

The Kia Sorento has always tried to go above and beyond as one of the few small crossover SUVs with a third row of seats — even if the back row was pretty cramped. As a result, the Sorento has long led a fairly compromised life straddling the two- and three-row SUV segments. But Kia is determined to make the small three-row SUV formula work. The redesigned 2021 Kia Sorento has more interior room and all-new powertrain choices, including a new hybrid.

The 2021 Sorento Hybrid pairs a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor to produce a combined 227 horsepower. The EPA estimates that it gets 37 mpg in combined city/highway driving, which is a significant 11 mpg more than a regular Sorento (with front-wheel drive and the 2.5-liter engine). This is a bit less what the EPA estimates for a Honda CR-V Hybrid (38 mpg combined) or a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid (40 mpg), but it's certainly competitive.

Kia will also offer a plug-in hybrid version later in the model year. It uses the same gasoline engine but adds a more powerful electric motor to churn out 261 horsepower. With the plug-in's 13.8 kWh of battery capacity, Kia estimates it can travel up to 30 miles on all-electric power before switching over to regular hybrid operation.

Overall, we're intrigued by the new Sorento Hybrid. It has a mix of luxury, space and high fuel economy that rival hybrid SUVs — such as Ford Escape Hybrid Honda CR-V Hybrid and Toyota Venza — can't quite match. Check back in the coming months for additional impressions once we are able to get a Sorento Hybrid in for a full evaluation.

Which Sorento Hybrid does Edmunds recommend?

Stick with the Sorento Hybrid S. Yes, it's the base trim, but it's actually more of a midlevel trim for the non-hybrid Sorento. The EX has a few more features, but none of them are must-haves.

Kia Sorento Hybrid models

The 2021 Kia Sorento Hybrid is a small SUV with three rows of seating that can seat up to six people. (The second row's seating consists of captain's chairs.) It's available in two trim levels: S and EX. Both are powered by a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine paired to an electric motor and a six-speed automatic transmission. Combined output is 227 horsepower. Front-wheel drive is standard but, unlike most other hybrid crossover SUVs, the Sorento Hybrid is not available with all-wheel drive.

S
As with most Kias, even the base level Sorento Hybrid S is well equipped. The only options are accessories such as mud flaps, wheel locks, a cargo net and a tow hitch. Standard features include:

  • 17-inch wheels
  • LED headlights
  • Tinted rear windows
  • Roof rails
  • Keyless entry with push-button start
  • Simulated leather upholstery
  • Power-adjustable driver's seat
  • Heated front seats
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • 8-inch touchscreen display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Six-speaker audio system

Standard tech and driver aids include:

  • Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert (warns you if a vehicle is in your blind spot during a lane change or while reversing)
  • Parking sensors (alert you to obstacles that may not be visible behind the vehicle when parking)
  • Lane keeping system (makes minor steering corrections to help keep the vehicle centered in its lane)
  • Forward collision mitigation (warns you of an impending collision and applies the brakes in certain scenarios)
  • Driver attention warning (issues an alert if sensors determine you are becoming fatigued)

EX
The Sorento Hybrid EX uses the same powertrain, so the only real differences are to features. Besides what's standard on the S trim, the EX adds:

  • LED foglights
  • Black exterior trim
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Wireless phone charger
  • Adaptive cruise control (adjusts speed to maintain a constant distance between the vehicle and the car in front)
  • Front parking sensors (alert you to obstacles that may not be visible in front of the vehicle when parking)
  • Enhanced forward collision mitigation (better recognizes pedestrians and cyclists)

감사합니다,
EX 4dr SUV (1.6L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric hybrid 6A)
Roomy, tech-loaded, efficient, and safe. My first hybrid, but third Kia product. After having some (relatively) trouble-free products, I decided to try another one from Kia. So far, so good. I had to get used to a car that does not make any sound or vibrant but it has been good. For it's size, I get good fuel economy. The best (and sometimes worst) features are the car nannies. Even though I cut them off most of the time, when I use them, they work spectacularly well together. Think of it like Tesla Autopilot-lite. Adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, active steering assist, and frontal collision mitigation pretty much drive for you!!
5/5 stars, Large luxury with 40mpg

EX 4dr SUV (1.6L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric hybrid 6A)
This big SUV has everything a vehicle can (except ventilated seats). The seats are incredibly comfortable, the performance matches that of a V6, the cargo capacity it astronomically large, the technology is top notch, the driving assistance does all but stop for gas, and most importantly, the gas mileage is unbelievable. I’m getting 40mpg in the city with a large luxury SUV. I love the panoramic roof, and parking is a breeze with the back up camera and front and rear parking sensors. This car has every feature you can search for in a car that doesn’t cost $75k or more, is absolutely gorgeous, and it does all this with the best auto warranty in the industry.
4/5 stars, So far so good

EX 4dr SUV (1.6L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric hybrid 6A)
Bought the Sorento after researching mid size SUV'S. Can't beat the price for the Kia warranty and the amenities that come with it. We got the hybrid and are more than happy with the mileage. My kids love the panoramic sunroof! With the 3rd row seats down (which they will be 99% of the time) there is plenty of cargo room and the rear seats have enough leg and head room for somebody over 6' tall. My only complaints at this time would be that the infotainment system has not been easy to connect my android phone to. Seems like I'm jumping thru a lot of hoops to get connected and navigate all of the screens. My other complaint would be the backup beeping. You cannot turn it down or off!! I understand the reasoning behind it, but think that it's unnecessary. My Dodge Durango is very quiet when it's running and doesn't need a backing beep so I don't buy the idea that an EV needs to make noise to warn people it's moving. And if it is necessary, why is the speaker in the grill, facing forward, and not in the rear bumper? We have only had it for two months now but so far, so good.

Kia Sorento Hybrid vs. Honda CR-V Hybrid

Honda recently introduced a hybrid version of one of its most popular models, the CR-V. It's a bit smaller than the Sorento and doesn't offer a third row, but the Honda is less expensive and offers standard all-wheel drive, a feature that's not available on the Sorento. Read Edmunds' long-term road test of the Honda CR-V Hybrid.

Kia Sorento Hybrid vs. Ford Escape Hybrid

The Ford Escape Hybrid is a compelling alternative to the Sorento. It lacks a third row, but otherwise it's spacious and comfortable. It's also available with all-wheel drive (something you can't get on the Sorento) and gets slightly better fuel economy. But the Sorento is the better buy if you want a third row or more interior space and refinement than the Ford provides.

Kia Sorento Hybrid vs. Toyota Venza

Toyota recently brought back the Venza after a few years on hiatus. This time around, the Venza is only available as a hybrid. It also comes with standard all-wheel drive, a boon for those who live in wet or snowy climates. It doesn't offer a third row like the Sorento, but we found the interior to be comfortable, spacious and nearly on the same level as the cabins of some luxury vehicles.

Should I lease or buy a 2021 Kia Sorento Hybrid?

Is it better to lease or buy a car? Ask most people and they'll probably tell you that car buying is the way to go. And from a financial perspective, it's true, provided you're willing to make higher monthly payments, pay off the loan in full and keep the car for a few years. Leasing, on the other hand, can be a less expensive option on a month-to-month basis. It's also good if you're someone who likes to drive a new car every three years or so.
