2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid Review
Pros
- Roomy and quiet cabin
- Comfortable ride quality
- High fuel economy for a small SUV
- More cargo space than most rivals
Cons
- Front-wheel drive is only available on the base trim
- Handling isn't as compelling as some competitors
What's new
- Kia's compact hybrid SUV is completely redesigned
- Larger and loaded with more tech than the previous model
- First Sportage with a hybrid powertrain
- Launches the fifth Sportage generation for 2023
Overview
The Kia Sportage was completely redesigned for the 2023 model year, and for the first time, there's an available hybrid model. It's the brand's third hybrid SUV, positioned above the smaller hybrid Niro and below the larger Sorento Hybrid. Looking at it, most won't think it's a Sportage because it looks nothing like the previous model and its interior is a vast improvement over the last one. The compact SUV is larger, offering more passenger and cargo room. In fact, its cargo now offers more space than the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and Honda CR-V Hybrid.

Under the hood is a fuel-sipping hybrid powertrain that consists of a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor, a hybrid battery pack and a six-speed automatic transmission. The total system output is 227 horsepower, which is a bit more than you'll find in the CR-V Hybrid (204 hp) and RAV4 Hybrid (219 hp). The front-wheel drive model gets an impressive EPA-estimated 43 mpg combined, and the all-wheel-drive model is rated at 38 mpg.
The Sportage's new interior has a very modern look thanks to its available 12.3-inch digital instrument panel that's paired with an available 12.3-inch touchscreen display. Both displays share the same curved housing, giving the impression that it's one large continuous display. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration is standard, and a wireless charging pad and a new surround-view camera system are optional. Kia didn't forget about safety and loaded the Sportage with an impressive array of standard advanced driver aids like lane keeping assist, and if that isn't enough, there is a long list of additional tech features such as a navigation-based adaptive cruise control system that can slow down before curves.
When it comes to comfort, the new Sportage Hybrid has you covered. The interior provides ample room for all passengers, and the back seats have a class-leading 41.3 inches of legroom. The seats are comfortable and offer solid support, and the interior is serene at speed. Ride quality is smooth as the suspension effectively masks most road imperfections. The hybrid powertrain has capable acceleration and it's noticeably quicker than the non-hybrid model.
There's a lot to like about the all-new Sportage Hybrid, making it a strong choice for a compact hybrid SUV. Besides going toe-to-toe with the RAV4 Hybrid and CR-V Hybrid, it also competes with the Escape Hybrid and its Hyundai counterpart, the Tucson Hybrid. Check out our test team's Expert Rating below to help you decide on which hybrid SUV is best for you.

Great
8.4
out of 10
We drove the 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Driving experience: 0-60, engine & performance
8/10
How does the Sportage Hybrid drive? The Sportage Hybrid is one of the quickest hybrid crossovers in its class. While we wouldn't call it blistering, it doesn't feel like there's a performance penalty when you opt for the hybrid. The turbocharged engine provides smooth power, and you don't feel when the SUV transitions from electric to gas power. Passing on the highway is easy thanks to the power and a quick-shifting transmission.
It's not sporty, but the Sportage Hybrid handles well enough for a crossover. The steering is quick and accurate, which is helpful for both parking and highway stability, though it doesn't give you much feel for the road. As with the powertrain, the brakes are impressive for a hybrid. The pedal is firm rather than soft and spongy like on some other hybrid vehicles, and that helps out with consistent and smooth stopping.

Comfort: seats, ease of use, and getting in & out
8.5/10
How comfortable is the Sportage Hybrid? Comfort is one of the Sportage Hybrid's strong suits. The front seats are soft and offer good lateral support without feeling overly tight. The rear seat is well padded but a bit flat. What's really impressive is the ride quality. It's smooth and compliant. The suspension evens out bumps, but it doesn't feel overly soft or disconnected from the road. It's one of the best-riding crossovers around today.
Kia made it quiet too. At low speeds when the engine is off, only a little outside noise makes it way into the cabin. Even at higher speeds, wind and road noise is mild. We also like that you don't feel vibrations or hear the gas engine fire up every time since it's not a particularly pleasant exhaust note. The automatic climate control system can be a bit odd to use at first (you switch a panel between climate and media/navigation controls) but it works evenly. Vent placement is good, too, especially in the rear.

Interior
8.5/10
How’s the interior? The Sportage Hybrid's driving position offers a decent range of adjustment for the seat and steering wheel, and there's excellent passenger space in both rows, even for taller adults. It's also fairly easy to get in and out of, aided further by the available Smart Park feature, even if it's a bit of a novelty.
The controls are easy to reach and fairly straightforward to use, at least once you find the switch that swaps the climate controls for the media and navigation controls. The infotainment screen and other controls are angled toward the driver, so nothing is a stretch to push or operate. The mirrors and windows afford decent visibility, helped out by the available blind-spot camera system. The available heated windshield should help in colder climates too.

In-cabin tech: infotainment & phone integration
8.5/10
How’s the tech? Kia offers loads of in-car tech and driver aids with the Sportage Hybrid. Standard features include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration (though neither connects to your phone wirelessly) and a modern-looking housing that integrates a digital instrument panel and center touchscreen. Our test vehicle was equipped with the upsized 12.3-inch center touchscreen. The bigger screen comes with an onboard navigation system that is straightforward to operate, and you can use voice commands to input directions or change radio stations.
The Sportage Hybrid is available with loads of driver aids, including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning, a surround-view monitor and parking assist. We like how it all works in practice. The adaptive cruise holds consistent gaps from the vehicle ahead without constantly tapping the brakes, and we didn't have any false alerts with any of the collision systems. Smart Park will pull the SUV out of or into a parking spot from the key fob. It's a neat party trick.

Storage: cargo space & space for small items
8.5/10
How’s the storage? Here's where the Sportage Hybrid really excels. With 39.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row and 73.7 cubes with that row folded down, the Sportage Hybrid is one of the most spacious crossovers in this class. Unlike some of its rivals, the Sportage Hybrid loses no space relative to its non-hybrid counterpart. The load floor is wide and flat, and the rear seats can be folded down from the hatch area. The rear seats have LATCH car seat anchors and are spacious enough for larger child safety seats.
Storage in the rest of the cabin is excellent too. The center console has a small lidded bin in front of the shifter that houses USB ports and an available wireless charging pad, though it's large enough for more than just a phone. The cupholders are nifty and can be tucked away to make another bin and set back with the push of a button. This is great if you always use a cupholder for your phone or sunglasses.

MPG: gas mileage & fuel economy
7.5/10
How’s the fuel economy? The Sportage Hybrid with all-wheel drive gets an EPA-estimated 38 mpg in combined city/highway driving. The base front-wheel-drive model is even better, at 43 mpg combined. That's considerably better than what a regular Sportage gets and on par with the fuel economy of other small SUV hybrids. Our test Sportage Hybrid with AWD achieved a slightly disappointing 34.5 mpg on Edmunds' real-world evaluation route, but it's worth noting that most of its rivals also underperformed in Edmunds' testing. We found that the Sportage Hybrid gets its best mpg in day-to-day driving around town where it can better take advantage of its hybrid powertrain.
Value: cost, features & warranty
8.5/10
Is the Sportage Hybrid a good value? The Sportage Hybrid is one of the most affordable hybrid crossovers on the market, though it doesn't feel cheap or cut-rate from inside. Even the top SX Prestige trim undercuts most of its rivals when matched feature for feature. Build quality is excellent, with a handsome interior design and nicer upholstery than you might expect from this class. Kia offers a five-year/60,000-mile basic warranty but covers both the powertrain as a whole and the battery alone for 10 years/100,000 miles. That's stellar stuff. Kia also includes five years/60,000 miles of roadside assistance.
Wildcard
8/10
The Sportage Hybrid is fairly quick for the class, but it's not the most entertaining crossover to drive. The steering, suspension and brakes are tuned for comfort, not carving up winding roads. That said, the Sportage Hybrid looks sharp. The exterior design, especially the front end, is striking. We commend Kia for offering matte paint at an affordable price, too, which really does a lot to spice things up.
2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid trim level differences
The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid is a compact SUV that's offered in three trim levels: LX, EX and SX Prestige. It's powered by a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a hybrid system. The total system output is 227 horsepower. You have a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive in the base LX trim, but the EX and SX Prestige are only available with AWD.
Which Sportage Hybrid trim does Edmunds recommend?
Unless you're aiming for the most efficient model, we recommend going with the midlevel EX trim. It brings simulated leather upholstery and heated front seats and adds more tech including a large 12.3-inch touchscreen and a wireless charging pad. All-wheel drive is included as well. You also have the option of adding the EX Premium package, which adds a panoramic sunroof, a hands-free liftgate and sharper-looking LED interior lighting.

2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid SX-Prestige 4dr SUV AWD (1.6L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric hybrid 6A)
I'll begin by stating that I waited until this 2023 Kia Sportage SX Prestige had ample miles on the odometer in order to give a more factual review. At 9,124 of mixed driving ( 60% highway, 40% city), this vehicle has been solid in every way. My overall mileage since purchase sits at 36.1. I easily manage a consistent 38 -40 in city driving. On a long 4500 mile road trip driving at … speeds between 65 and 80, the mpg sat at 33.9. The Sportage is quiet, very comfortable and handles well. There is an excellent amount of storage in the rear.I have the Harman Kardon stereo system that sounds better and better now that the new speakers have loosened up a bit. The safety gear works well and the navigation is a snap to use. Mine is the matte gray finish. It looks great but can't be run through a car wash. Touchless only, with as little sudsy stuff as possible. And that is possible only because I had a ceramic coating applied. Now, the only real fault with this vehicle is the ridiculously touchy HVAC/entertainment controls. Don't look cross-eyed at them. They have an attitude all their own. This vehicle has a slew of useful safety features and if you pay too much attention to adjusting the temperature in your car, you may well need them. That being said, I try to adjust everything before starting out. Now!! This is hands down the best performing vehicle I have owned. It's quick, quiet, and comfortable and at least to this point, entirely trouble free.
Quiet, comfortable and powerful

2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid SX-Prestige 4dr SUV AWD (1.6L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric hybrid 6A)
We love our new Sportage Hybrid Prestige. The hybrid engine provides a really quiet and powerful ride for a crossover. We bought this SUV because it has more room than the competitors, great MPG, and the driving technology is amazing, especially the lane keeping assist on highways. The interior is very luxurious for the price point. So far we’ve had no issues.
I wish they would not … have left out the power folding mirrors and the wireless CarPlay. What is the purpose of wireless charging if you still have to use a cable to connect to the screen?
Great car!

2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid SX-Prestige 4dr SUV AWD (1.6L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric hybrid 6A)
I have had this Sportage SX Prestige Hybrid for 3 months. My last car was a 2019 Totota Rav 4 Hybrid. The Kia rides much better, has more technology, is quieter, and quicker, especially in sport mode. The interior is more spacious and attractive that the Rav. On the down side, the raw averaged 38 mpg overall and at times was closer to 45 mpg. The Sportage get about 3 mpg less. But, for … me, that is a fair trade off for the overall comfort the Sportage provides.

2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid EX 4dr SUV AWD (1.6L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric hybrid 6A)
I had a new 2022 Tucson hybrid now I bought the 2023 Kia Sportage. I like the features and the ride better in the Kia Sportage I like the style a little better on the Hyundai. The interior is much better in the Kia Sportage. I think the style of the Sportage is more conservative than the Tucson. Kia built on the Tucson platform and I feel they did a better job with tuning on the … suspension. On the Hyundai I purchased the SEL convenience package, on the Sportage I purchased the e x with the premium package that would be equivalent to the SEL convenience . package. The Sportage package has some nicer features than the Hyundai the larger screen 12.25 and heated steering wheel. It just seems to be put together a little better. It also gets better gas mileage than the Tucson.I have had it for about 2 weeks now. What a pleasure to drive, I just went to North Seattle during rush hour and back and got 40.8 mpg. I also am starting to like the style better also. Three different review sites agreed..
