Customers over cars

by Eugenecarscene on 03/20/2017

Sheppard Volvo valued me as a customer and was most concerned with getting me the right car and then making the sale.

Didn't expect to buy . . .

by tomhager on 12/05/2012

Just came in for a test drive, but the sales team was so low-key, knowledgeable, and friendly that I bought then and there. Fair deal, great car, good followup from the sales guys.

Steer clear of this place...

by dyria on 05/17/2011

We had been searching for a late-model luxury car for a short time and saw one we liked that had been on the lot at Sheppard for about a month. Went in, drove it, liked it, and signed a preliminary contract and agreed on a price. We already had our financing, which came through immediately. All of this happened on a Sunday. We did due diligence and took it to independent mechanic the next day who did find a $1200 repair. I talked to the manager that afternoon, and we discussed the repair and agreed to talk the next day after I could talk with my spouse who had just gone out of town. The next day at noon, our original salesman called to tell me that the car had been sold out from under us. The dealership hadn't even bothered to let us know in the four or so business hours that had past since we had last spoken with the manager. Wonder if they used our mechanic's report to close the deal and at what price? Nice... Having lived in Germany for many years, we were definitely interested in buying a German car, and this is the only dealship in Eugene. However, after this experience, driving to Portland will be what we'll do. Beyond Exasperated in Eugene

Salesman experience

by johnc36 on 03/18/2011

Went to dealership to look at certain cars. Salesman was very polite offered assistance showing inventory. No pressure applied, thanked me for considering dealership, no hard sales pitch.

Purchase of new 2009 Tiguan

by g_billings on 07/14/2009

I'm a little apprehensive about car buying mainly because I feel that I'm not very good at negotiating and I always feel as though that will be my hurdle to getting a good deal. The whole process ended up being much easier than I'd expected. Sheppard Motors was the first dealership we stopped at since we were replacing my wife's '01 Passat and VWs were high on our list. The dealership is relatively small, and I think Dave Kind was the only salesperson I saw when we walked in. We expressed our interest in looking at the Tiguan and he was more than happy to show us. Dave was, in short, my ideal salesman. He spent some time pointing out the features of the car and answering our questions, took us for a test drive, and when we were done he gave us his card and told us to contact him if we had more questions or wanted to talk about purchasing. There was no pushiness, no dragging us into a cubicle in the dealership so he could start throwing numbers at us and then turn us over to a closer when he felt like we weren't moving fast enough. I'd readied myself for all of this by reading 'Confessions of a Car Salesman' and I'd been prepared for a fight, but had no reason to be. After test driving some other vehicles, we returned a couple days later to take another look at the Tiguan and drive it one more time. Dave was just as helpful, and even offered to let us take the car for the afternoon if we were going to do some more car shopping so that we could better compare vehicles we were looking at. He did spend some time that day trying to track down a model in the color my wife preferred since they only had a single Tiguan on the lot. We eventually had to leave to pick up our kids, but were leaning heavily toward the Tiguan at that point. It didn't take long for my wife to decide that the VW was her top choice, and I shifted into buying mode. In one evening I shot off emails to other dealers in the state and by the next morning had gotten back quotes from 3 of them, from about $1000 over invoice to $500 under. I knew that at worst I could just head to one of the out of town dealerships and get a good deal, so I felt as though I had a strong negotiating position to work from. I called back Dave and we started talking about prices. After about 5 minutes we'd both made our points, and the only major hurdle we had was our trade, which they were offering at well above normal trade in value. They were willing to bend there, and on the price of the Tiguan, but not both. Finally we ended up taking the trade off the table and hammering down the price to $500 over invoice, which was above what one of the other dealers was asking, but I felt it fair. I wanted to keep my business local, I preferred to keep Dave in the loop since he'd been the one helping us from the start, and I wanted to avoid the hassle of driving out of town a couple of times to finish the purchasing. With everyone satisified I put down a deposit on the car that day, and the next day we headed down to the dealership to pick it up. We had both our kids with us, and luckily the whole process only took about an hour, made easier by the portable DVD player I'd brought with me. The last hurdle I felt I had to jump through was the talk with the F&I rep, which again I'd prepared for by reading Edmund's 'Confessions' series on the subject. I turned down all of the options presented to me and thankfully didn't have to endure any hard sells. All that was left to do was for Dave to show my wife the finer points of the car. While that was happening, I loaded up the kids and went home and she followed about ten minutes later. All in all, I was very happy with my whole experience. We'd talked with a few other local dealers, and our time there just wasn't as good. In one case we got stuck in an office with the GM who blathered on for almost 15 minutes. I think he'd been trying to make one point which he could have gotten across in a sentence or tw
