Before I bought my Mustang I tested a few dealers by starting an email dialog with them. What I did was get a Ford Direct price and asked if they'd honor it. No trade in involved. I gave them my phone number too so that they could gauge the reality of my interest. "Stu" called. I told him what I wanted. He had something close without ABS (never buy a car without ABS). He said that if I wanted them to get the car I wanted from another dealership, I'd have to, get this - "Buy the car, close the deal and wait till the car showed up" Thats right. These guys wanted me to buy a car sight-unseen. Better than that...if I wouldn't go for that tactic, I could give them a non-refundable $500 deposit. They'd get the car and if I didn't close the deal they'd keep my money. And the topper...when I emailed the Sales Manager about the absurdity of this plan, return a diatribe of off-handed remarks about my role as the buyer and their unsullied "integrity". In the end, he was "insulted" that I'd suspect them of tomfoolery (ok, thats my word). And yet somehow people still buy cars from them.
