bad negotiating

by david_i on 03/21/2017

We were looking at a the Chevrolet Malibu on Saturday 3/18/17. Everything was going great until we began negotiating price. First , the representative Matthew had a sort of Jekyll and Hyde personality; we were best friends during the test drive but as soon as we started talking money I think we broke up. He went from talking sports and life in general to being closed off and anti "getting me that car." Second, we told Matthew that we were looking at paying cash for the vehicle. He then proceeded on asking us if we were sure that we didn't want to save some money for a rainy day and other ideas along those lines. If I wanted a lesson on saving money I would call my grandma. Third, the price negotiating left a foul taste in my mouth. When we were on our test drive he mentioned that because we found the car online we would have a $200 discount. After hearing that, I was excited to start the discussions. It has been awhile since I had bought a car and wasn't sure how much tax, title, and licencing would be so I asked. Matthew told me that it would be roughly 10 percent. Doing the math in my head was as follows: a $ 16,995 car-$200=$16,795x.1(10%)=$1,679.5 about $1,700. So a car that would cost approximately $16,800 with 10% tax, title, and licencing it would be almost $18,500. The price Matthew quoted me was $18,500. Being that this was a car dealership, and a used car dealership at that, I was going to dicker over the price a little. I asked if there was anyway he could bring it down closer to $18,000. He said he needed to talk to his manager and see what he could do. After a really short period of time he came out of the office with a sticky note and a new price on it; $19,651. That's not how the "talk to the manager" thing goes. The price was supposed to go down at least a fraction, not up by $1,000 from the original quote. He then said something about extra fees this and that and that this was the actual price. He also, said that there was no way they would or could drop the price for me. Needless to say, I walked away, listened to Russell Wilson, and bought a different Malibu from the friendly and up front sales people at Look Larson.
