Fraudulent Practices

by DO NOT BUY CARS FROM THIS DEAL on 07/09/2020

My husband and I made an appointment to test drive a white Toyota Hybrid Highlander with Sami Faraj at Don McGill Toyota of Katy on May 22, 2020. I had discovered the car online and wanted to take it for a test drive. We met Sami in front of the dealership and he discussed a few things we were looking for in a new car. Once it was time to bring the car around he drove up in a more expensive model, saying the white one had just sold. (The white highlander and the car I ended up buying were still listed on their website as available for sale two weeks later). We drove the car and liked it. My husband had bought a car at this dealership 2 ½ years prior and really liked the experience he had at that time. The dealership would not come off the price of the car, and didn’t offer to pay off his current Toyota that they said was in excellent condition. After going back and forth several times they finally agreed to pay off the Camry minus $655. We were in agreement with the payoff and the monthly payment. Once we made it back to the finance manager there was confusion as to the rebate and our payments went up by $100. Our finance manager, Felipe Rodriguez, gave us an explanation that the sales rep doesn’t have all the details to ensure the payments are correct. He went on to discuss warranties and I mentioned we did not want any of the warranties that were offered. My husband and I have bought a total of 11 new cars and been down this road enough to know most warranties don’t get used within the time we own the car. He explained that if we are planning on keeping the car long term (which we plan to this time around) that we needed to invest in an extended warranty and GAP insurance. We agreed to both of those warranties. He quickly pulled up the paperwork on his fancy desk monitor and asked my husband to sign where it was “green.” With all the cars we have bought we have never been so rushed to sign and we’ve never been taken for a ride like this before; therefore, we really didn’t feel the need to go over every little detail with the salesman. SHAME ON US!!!!! Felipe gave us our USB port and said thank you. A couple of days later I plugged the USB into to our computer and looked over all the paperwork. I don’t even know where to begin on how deceptive the practices are at this dealership. 1) The bottom price of the car was $50, 593.95 after the dealership extras that were added. The purchase price on our purchase agreement was $250.00 more. I emailed my Sales Rep, Sami and asked if he would give me Felipe’s contact information or have him call me because I had questions regarding the agreement and needed an explanation. Felipe did not give us a business card, and now I understand why. Sami responded and said he asked Felipe to call me. Felipe never called me. I had to go back to the dealership to get a few spots looked at on my car. When I arrived I asked Sami if I could speak to Felipe to get my questions answered. Felipe was not in the office that day so, I spoke to a different Finance Manager we will refer to him as Mr. Z. Mr. Z did not go over the paperwork with me either. He seemed a tad bit nervous, and when I mentioned the most obvious mistake regarding the purchase price he mostly focused on that detail. The Desk Manager, Sigmund came in and explained they would be cutting a check to Toyota Financial for the $250, because they cannot cut a check in our name. Sigmund said it will show up on our Toyota Statement. He also promised that someone would call when the check had been cut and a coy would be sent to our email for our records. He didn’t offer his business card and quickly distracted me to other topics. It’s been 5 weeks and we have not heard from him. I have sent three emails to Sami (our Sales Rep) asking for the status with no response back. - UPDATE – Sami finally responded to my third email, and he said the check was ready for me to pick up. I responded with “the agreement with Sigmund was that someone was going to call me when the check was cut and email a copy.” I asked who the check was made out to and he said it was in my husband’s name. He had no other response as to why it wasn’t made out to Toyota the lien holder as agreed. This is another examply of the deceptive behavior that goes on at this dealership. How was is possible to get the check in my husband’s name when I was originally told they couldn’t do that. (I never requested the check to be cut in my husband’s name by the way). Sami and Mr. Z were both in the room when this agreement was made. 2) The second issue was the $899 in dealer options. I asked Mr. Z why we were charged for those because they were built into the additional options in the purchase price of the car. He said we weren’t charged for them. I’m not a mathematician, however, if you add up the cost of the car it comes out to the $56065.71 which means we were charged for the $899 in dealer options. The dealer options that were charged were for the additional APEX coverage. Felipe and Sami both mentioned that our car came with APEX already. Felipe never mentioned that he was upgrading us to a 5 year contract. The $899 is for the additional coverage which again not sure why we paid another $899 if we had already paid $595 in the bottom price of the car. 3) I also questioned the $837 charge for Blue, and Mr. Z never gave me a clear answer, because he was focusing on getting me an answer on the $250 over charge. As you can see by the paper work we were charged an additional $199 for Blue Steel (Foresight), which again both Sami and Felip mentioned our car already came with this option and was included in our dealer installed sticker. As you can see we were charged for the Tire and Wheel coverage for $638. That total comes out to $837. AGAIN, we were not asked if we wanted additional Blue Steel coverage and Felipe said he was giving us the Tire and Wheel protection for FREE as explained in point 4 below. 4) Felipe also said because “we were good people” he was going to throw in the tire and wheel warranty for free. We of course were appreciative and thanked him for his generosity. I saw on the paper work that we were actually charged $638 for that protection. Mr. Z said that Felipe came down on the price of the extended warranty to cover the tire and wheels. Felipe did not explain that to us at the time he was giving us our deal. In fact, Felipe said our warranty was cheaper in price because he lowered the miles to 75K. We were also not given the pricing details of the warranty or options in years or miles for price comparison. So we really don’t know what the warranty cost originally. When I googled the warranty I see that people have posted they have gotten the extended Toyota warranty for $1200 for 100K miles. We paid $2595. 5) After looking over the sticker and the paperwork we also noticed on the original sticker the manufacturer has additional costs added called “Distributor Installed Options.” One of the items includes the Vehicle Protection Package: • Paint Renewer Cleaner • Paint Sealant • Fabric Guard • Rental Car Assistance This package cost $349 and was included in the sticker price. However, the dealer added options also had listed Paint and Fabric Protection for 1 year at the cost of $299. Now this sticker was placed on top of the manufacturer’s sticker, so we couldn’t tell that the paint protection was already included.

Don McGill needs to be honest and honer their commitment

by M on 04/28/2020

I was deceived by the price advertised. Additional 2500 dollars were added on the top of the advertised after I drove all the way to the dealership. Also, they never sent me any update info although the sales, Victor, agreed to discuss with his supervisor for a reasonable price, but he never did. I was so close to pull the trigger to buy but apparently they just did not care about my business.

2019 Highlander SE

by VictorG on 12/05/2019

I bought a 2019 Highlander about 3 weeks ago, but the service I received from the sales person and also the finance department was very poor. NO returned calls or text on questions that I had after I sign the contract. I even recommend my nice to buy a car and she did, she bought a 2019 RV4 limited with the same sales guy. But I wont recommend any body else for the reason I didn't get the service that I deserved as a client.

Just want a fair deal

by justwantedafairdeal on 04/14/2019

Buyers beware. Don McGill Toyota plays games. First they advertise an internet price, then they make you sign a piece of paper that you promise to buy the car today if you agree on price (a psychological mind game which isn’t legally worth the paper it is written on - they do this so you pressure yourself to buy from them now even if it is against self interest). Then they take you trade in for an evaluation. After the evaluation, they keep your keys and present you with an initial offer of the internet price plus $2400 “reconditioning” fee. They low ball your trade in to the tune of 30% of NADA and won’t give your keys back until you throw a fit. They separate you from your keys as away of psychological gamesmanship. Once you are thoroughly insulted, they offer to waive the “reconditioning” fee and ask you what you think you should pay. They made me a second offer some $8,000 less than their original bogus offer which was still about $4,000 over the subtracted NADA values of the trade in vs “new” used car you are trying to buy. I had to get irate and demand my car key 5 times before Don McGill Toyota would return my keys. The irony is the car they showed me had the engine light on with a fault code indicating the fuel sending unit sensor failed and the rear view mirror was missing. The car they tried to sell to me $12,000 over NADA couldn’t even pass a state inspection in its condition. In hindsight, I should have screamed obscenities to cause a scene and called the police to retrieve my keys.

Bad Sales service

by SNJ on 06/30/2018

Tried buying a Volvo XC90 used car even at higher than value after being promised a full inspection and replacement of faulty parts. On second visit the discussion was very shoddy. The engine light would not go easily and there was another message about some faulty lights. On inquiring with the sales rep, the response was very rude. Bad experience!

I had the worst experience EVER in trading in my car to purchase a newer used vehicle . I show up at 10:06 am with an appointment for 10.00am .I only requested to look at 2 cars I liked. I called days in advance to make sure the cars where available. I was told to come in that the cars would be ready for test driving when I get there at 10 .They were not ready when I got there. I told them I wanted to see what they would give me for my car to trade. The Sales Rep was nice but I had to constantly wait on him, And several times had to go find him. Finally after 30 mins comes back and there still checking my car he said he would go get the keys to the cars ,which took more time. I see the first car , which wasn’t even clean or detailed just dirty. I didn’t care for it. I Wanted to see the next car. He said he would go get the keys to the other and check to see how much I would have to put down to purchase the other vehicle , it cost a little bit more. I was left sitting in the car I didn’t want for 25 mins and finally I went back in side to Try and find him again. Waited another 15 mins. Finally comes back with the keys and tells me how much he can do for me. We go to test drive the car and it has no gas. We go get gas. I test drive it. Liked it. Come back , go over a few things then go to financing. I sit and wait again becuse there’s 3 people ahead of me . It’s been hours at this point already. I’m starving with a bad headache. Wait another 40 mins. Finally a nice gentle man who works there noticed I had been there ALL morning asks my name to see how much longer I have to wait. Which he was trying to help me but still had more time to wait. I go and find the sale rep again cus I’m irritated. Finally I get in with the financial department.. get in and get out quickly with him no problem there. He walks me back to the sales reps desk to have him put on my temp plates . The Rep wasn’t at his desk. I sit and wait again. Finally went back to financial department to the guy who helped me to see if he can find the rep cus I was waiting he didn’t show up at his desk...Finally get the car I wanted ... I get home and there’s something wrong with one of the seats. I live over a hour away, been there all day and and Cleary explained I have a sick kid at home And a funeral I’m leven out of town in a few days I have to get home and take care of things...i cant be here all day..now I have to call back cus I’m upset that it wasn’t correct on the inspection on the car... I call which there going to fix it. But I have to drive over an hour back to the dealership to do so... I wouldn’t recommend purchasing a vehicle from here , the wait and irrigation alone not worth any hassle. The ONLY reason I got the car is becuse no other dealership I looked at had any I was interested in...They didn’t even care that I wasted a hole day of time there on a deal that could have taken mabey 3 hours TOPS ...Theres NO justifications on why it took so long. There was more then enough people standing around that could have helped.

[non-permissible content removed]

by flolucas73 on 02/12/2018

In May of 2017 (5/17/2017) In the accompaniment of William and Deborah Lucas, I made the horrible mistake of purchasing a brand new Toyota Camry XLE Hybrid from Don McGill Toyota of Houston, at 11800 Katy Freeway, Houston, Texas 77079. One of reasons I bought the vehicle, is because during financing, I was promised by Edward J. McDonald, (hereafter referred to as “Finance Manager”) that I would be given a $3000.00 rebate (please see purchase agreement) and a $750.00 loyalty reward, directly from Toyota, for purchasing my new Camry. Additionally, during financing, I was told by the Finance Manager that if I purchased Don McGill’s “all inclusive” Blue Steel Warranty for $1,399.00, Prepaid maintenance agreement for $1,400.00 and Vehicle Services Agreement for $2,500.00 [total of $5,299.00) my new Camry would be “completely covered to 100,000 miles,” including road hazard insurance (glass, paint chipping, tires and wheels), life time paint and interior coverage [including scratches on the exterior] and that any maintenance needed to be done on the vehicle during the first 100,000 miles or 5 years (whichever comes first), my new Camry would be covered under the expensive warranty contracts I was swindled in to purchasing. [please refer to the Don McGill Toyota Houston purchase agreement and affidavits from William and Deborah Lucas] On the 5th of February 2018, I took my car to Don McGill Toyota of Katy to have a scratch on my right quarter panel and a curbed wheel fixed. I was told by the their service advisor that the Toyota service computer indicated that my vehicle was not covered under any road hazard and or paint protection warranty and he advised that I contact the finance office at Don McGill Toyota Houston, where I purchased my Camry. After two hours of trying to contact the Finance Director and General manager of Don McGill Toyota of Houston, I was finally connected with a person named Tommy Parker, who claimed to be the general manager of the dealership. Mr. Parker assured me that my Camry was in fact covered for paint scratches and wheel damage. He asked me if my tire was damaged, which I assured him it was fine. Per Mr. Parker’s instructions I took my Camry to Don McGill Toyota of Houston on February 5th, 2018 around 10:30am. Saturday, February 9th, 2018, William Lucas picked it up from Don McGill Toyota of Houston for me and discovered that nothing had been fixed. Both William Lucas and myself repeated tried to contact Mr. Parker to find out why the wheel and paint were not fixed, but where not able to get past the receptionists phone screening. After calling over 15 times, the receptionist told William Lucas that, “Do you not get the point….Mr. Parker is not interested in talking to you or your stupid wife.” I have pretty much given up on attempting to obtain the aforementioned $3,750.00 in rebate and loyalty bonus I was promised by Edward J. McDonald. After speaking with Toyota Motor Company and doing research on any legal recourse I may have, it seems the only thing I can do is to pay a very expensive arbitration fee to arbitrate the issue with an arbitration company loyal to the ownership and management of Don McGill Toyota. Now it appears that the $5,299.00 in extended, service and protection warranties I purchased from the criminals running Don McGill Toyota Houston are worthless. I am a 73 year old Christian woman and I cannot afford to be cheated so terribly. Can anyone help me? Shame on Don McGill!

I have never had a great experience of purchasing a car until I went to Don McGill Toyota and met Mark M. He has been the best car salesman I have had the pleasure of meeting and doing business with. He treated me as if I was a million dollar customer although he knew my situation was nowhere near that. God but people in your life for a reason and Mark was at the right place at the right time. Thanks Mark for everything you've done.

Would not recommend to my worse enemy!

by wniece on 02/18/2012

Arranged an appointment at the dealership on 12/31/11 to purchase a SUV and trade-in my car. First, let me just tell you be prepared for a lot of bait and switch, tricks and ways to wear you down! After about six and a half hours, I finally drove off the lot with a new car. However, beware of their tricks. I can't believe I actually fell for them! First, after selecting a Highlander, I test drove it and started negotiating with them. At one point, I was ready to leave. Afraid I would leave without making their end-of-year quota, they had another salesperson come up in front of me and my salesperson and ask the keys to the Highlander I was negotiating for. The salesperson said they had arranged an appt. to come out and look at it and wanted to buy it. It was the last one, so I felt like I was forced to make a decision then and now. I decided to keep it. They had me in my salesperson office, I got up to go look at it again and realized that the salesperson that had just asked for the keys, had just walked back over to the small cubicle and was sitting drinking his coffee. This was after I agreed to the car. There was no other customer! Bottom line, there was no other customer! I fell for their trick, hook line and sinker! Now I am stuck with a bitter taste about the whole experience and a vehicle that rattles and creaks from bad build quality, been back to service twice now – I would like to know what happened to Toyota quality and service! It's a shame. Besides all of this, they had written down the wrong VIN number and we had to create the paperwork twice! It was late, and I was not able to get everything I needed because they were closing. Got home and that night they were calling me back frantic because they had realized they had sold me the wrong vehicle, so I had to turnaround and go back on 1/1/11 and sit for one hour again to redo everything! Why I let them do this to me is beyond my imagination other than I had new car fever and needed a bigger vehicle. But, this is the last time I will ever buy another Toyota after owning 5 in the last 16 years! I would not recommend Don McGill Toyota to even my worst enemy. Run away from them and Toyota! Look to the big 3 – they are building better cars and want your business!

Appraisal Manager's Insult

by toyotaowner9 on 01/29/2010

It is very sad that a appraisal manager would risk loosing a possible long time customer by offering a very low-ball value for a 6 month old vehicle that was bought in their own dealership. Certain circumstances arises where an individual might need to sell their car. He doesn't need to assume whether a person is desperate or not. Offering an amount half the price of the new vehicle is an insult to the customer and the toyota brand. No one would even want to negotiate with someone like that. I will not recommend selling or buying a vehicle here at all. This happened Jan 29, 2010 so you will know which manager was assigned there. I hope Don Mcgill takes action on this. You need to be careful in treating all your customers because that is why you are still in business. Another note I am just the friend of the person they did this to. I own a toyota and was thinking of trading it in and buying a new toyota again. So He just lost two loyal customers. I'm going to spread the word. If this review either convinces someone not to buy from you or makes you treat each customer fairly I'll be happy.

Great dealership

by jastin on 05/13/2008

I was on the market to trade in my chevrolet equinox 2005 and to buy a new Corolla LE 2009. I emailed several dealership in town. Ed Salazar, internet manager, offered to match any price to earn my business as I live close buy. I went to the dealership to see the inventory and meet with Mr. Salazar. Two days later, we sat down and discuss price and option, along with the trade in of my chevrolet. We did not agree on prices but Mr Salazar tried hard to accomodate my request, specially on the trade in with a lot of miles (73000). After two days of phone calls to negotiate, we agreed over the phone on the deal. I mentioned to Mr Salazar that I was worried having to spend countless hours at the dealership to finalize the deal. We agreed on the time I will come. When I arrived, the car was ready. I spent about 35 minutes at the dealership and only 5 minutes in the financing departement. All the paperwork was ready, with no surprises or small print. I drove off the lot in my new car, leaving my gas guzzling SUV behind. I want to mention that I brought along the TMV from Edmunds for both the new car and the trade in. Mr Salazar matched the best trade in offer I had from several dealership and I got a great deal on the new car. Everyone was friendly and I never felt pressure to close the deal.
