Buyer Beware

On our initial visit to Cumberland Toyota we met with a sales rep who was was very pleasant and seemingly very honest. He told us up front that the dealership will add $2000 on top of MSRP on any Highlander. Also told us up front that there would be an additional $2000 added if we paid cash. We didn’t like these additional costs but thought his honesty was refreshing for a dealership. Then the finance department took over and honesty left the building. I’ll start with the running board we asked for but did not come with the car from the factory. We asked the finance guy to add a running board. He quoted a price of $1459.70. Not knowing the price of a RB we said ok. We found out later by accident that the parts department sells the RB for $499. So they charged $1000 for the install. WOW. Afterwards we called around and found several other dealers offering them for $800 installed. Next came the loan interest rates. Like many other reviews over the YEARS they offered us a ridiculously high interest rate. But will offer you a decent rate if you purchase the overpriced extended warranty! Lies and manipulation to get the buyer to spend money they probably can’t afford! Lastly they spelled my wife’s name wrong. When we asked them to change it they assured us if we signed the papers the actual papers being sent out would have the correct name. They did not. Buyers Beware This Dealership!

Jenny in the service department at Toyota in Cookeville Tennessee fit me in without an appointment to check whether my RAV4 was one of the ones that had a defective battery. I do not live there so it was very convenient for me because I was in Cookeville anyway for a doctors appointment. Everybody there was very friendly and efficient.

For two decades I have appreciated the friendly service staff at Cumberland Toyota service center. My last visit this year was a different story. Towards the end of last year, when I had my oil changed, they told me I would need to pay $275 to fix a hose coolant leak, also said my rear brake pads were okay at 4mm. When I returned this year to fix the coolant leak, they initially wouldn't honor their $275 price guarantee, saying I would have to pay $390 plus $28 environmental fee. I had to talk to two supervisors before they agreed to honor my price, the first supervisor being extremely disagreeable. While I was there, they looked at my gear shift, which had stuck temporarily three times, initially saying I probably spilled something in it causing it to stick. The service center should not be free to charge $70 for looking at my gear shift without informing me of the intended charge; but they did. I complained, but was not heard. The counter service representative told me my rear seatbelt was not working correctly, and that he would have the mechanic look at it. The mechanic said he would have to replace the assembly, for $800. I refused the $800, and when I looked at the seat belt, I saw that it was twisted some. I pulled the seatbelt to its extreme, untwisted it, and the seatbelt retracted fine, restored to proper functioning. My trust in the service center is damaged. I feel outrage that they would want to charge me $800 for an assembly that didn't need repair. They looked at my brakes last year when I had my oil changed, and they looked again upon this visit. Last visit, they said my rear brakes were fine at 4mm. This visit, they told me my rear brakes needed to be replaced for $300, saying I had only 2mm brake pad remaining. The supervisor scoffed at me when I explained it unlikely I had lost 2mm from the rear brake pads, being that I drove less than 1000 miles between these two visits. The counter representative also seemed angry that I refused the charge for replacing the rear brakes. I would like to be able to trust the Cumberland Toyota service center, most especially because they are the only Toyota service provider in my area. I would like many future years of exceptional service. I hope my review can help make this happen for myself and for other women customers.
