Post Sales follow up needs improvement

by Vivian on 01/05/2019

I had wanted to replace my 2005 Honda Accord EX V6 (<107,000 miles) with a vehicle that has 4-wheel drive. Inspired by generally good reviews I went to Hunter Hyundai (Hendersonville, NC) on 11/6/2018 to test drive a 2019 Santa Fe. Nathan Derouen was the salesman who greeted me and my friend. I test drove a 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe Ultimate 2.0t AWD but it wasn't the white exterior color that I wanted. I didn't have the Honda with me so they couldn't give me a firm trade-in price. I left without purchasing a car. Two days later (11/8/2018) Nathan called to follow up, I told him about the dealer discount on the same model at Asheville Hyundai, to which Nathan requested that I bring the car in for evaluation and that Hunter Hyundai would match the discount offered by Asheville Hyundai. I did, that afternoon a deal was struck that seemed fair (I had done research online about the 2019 Santa Fe and the trade in value of my Honda). Hunter Hyundai found a 2019 Santa Fe 2.0t AWD in white exterior and tan/black interior from another dealer out-of-town. They kept my Honda but gave me a brand new car as a loaner (it was a 2019 Santa Fe AWD SE with 2.4 liter engine). I returned to Hunter Hyundai on 11/16/2018 to pick up the car . The dealership can use a face lift/remodel. There was no brochure on the 2019 Santa Fe (I picked one up from a Hyundai dealer in Charlotte two weeks earlier). Showroom seating crammed, sales literature incomplete. The "sales" part of the buying experience was good: no pushy hard sales as I did my homework and research and know how much would be a fair price. Nathan Derouen was very helpful and courteous. Aaron Jones, the sales manager, called me on 11/7/2018 to make sure that Nathan was doing his job because I didn't buy a car the day before. I assured Aaron that Nathan was great and that I had just starting searching for a car so we hadn't agreed on a price. It was a big learning curve from driving a 2005 car to a 2019 car, all the electronics in the new car seem overwhelming. I am especially thankful that Nathan arranged for a brand new loaner car that is very similar to the car that I agreed to purchase (the loaner car was a 2019 Santa Fe SE model) so I could get familiar with driving the Santa Fe. The final purchase/pick up of my car was not so good! Me and my friend spent 3 hours at Hunter Hyundai, half of which was spent waiting in the lobby! Hunter Hyundai/Subarau/Volvo is a very busy dealership. We got there at 1 pm on 11/16/2018 (Friday) and didn't get out until 4 pm. First we had to wait ~25 minutes for Nathan Derouen to finish up with a customer, he showed us where my new car was parked. Then we had to wait 45 minutes in the lobby for a business manager. Chad Mock was a newly hired business manager, he appeared with my folder but he had no clue about my case/paperwork. He told me I had to go to the local DMV to get my registration and title when I asked him about how things worked since I am keeping the license plate from my Honda. He then left to do something else. I doubted his answer so I asked Nathan Derouen who assured me since the agreed to "out-the-door" price on 11/8/2018 included doc fee, state & local taxes, total license and fees that the title clerk at Hunter Hyundai would take care of that. A few minutes later Chad returned to the lobby and asked me and my friend to follow him to his office to finalize the financing part of the deal. My original plan was to put $20,000 down and finance the rest. Chad told me that it will cost me $750 more than the agreed upon price if I financed the rest of the car @0% financing for 48 months. I was going to question Chad about paying $750 more to finance the car as on Hyundai USA website it stated $1,500 cash rebate OR $750 for financing + $500 matching down payment (my down payment was $20,000). However, I was tired/overwhelmed by then so I told Chad I would just write a check for the balance. As I mentioned before Chad was a new hire, there's a notary certificate with the name of his predecessor Joseph Baker (if I remember the name correctly) on the wall of his office. Took a while before Chad could complete the computerized paperwork, 1 of which he was stuck. He said he had to ask his boss who was the only person who could sign onto Hyundai website to do something with that paperwork and he would mail me that piece of paperwork to me when it was done. My head was spinning by the time I left the dealership with my brand new car @4:05 pm. Post Sales service sort of sucked! I called Hunter Hyundai on 11/27/2018 when I did not receive said paper, left voice mail with Aaron Jones, the sales manager and with Chad who were both conveniently "in a meeting". Nathan Derouen called me later that morning informing me that both Aaron Jones and Chad Mock were "out of the office", I told him the reason I called, Nathan said he would call me the next day. Indeed Nathan called on 11/28/2018 ~1 pm to tell me that the piece of paper I was supposed to receive in the mail was a "2-year service warranty", provided free by Hunter Hyundai and that I could pick it up at the dealership. I asked Nathan why the car title application was only electronically submitted to the North Carolina DMV on 11/27/2018 when the purchase was finalized on 11/16/2018 (I had called NC DMV the morning of 11/28/2018 to check on status of the registration and car title) to which he replied because they sell 200 cars per month so it takes a while for the title clerk to submit the application. I am glad Hunter Hyundai is doing so well, surely they can afford to hire extra help to speed up the electronic registration/title process. I picked up the free "2-year scheduled maintenance warranty" at 3:45 pm on 11/28/2018, Chad Mock was at the front desk, he stated that I didn't need that paper since the information is in their system. Well, that piece of paper had the wrong term on it anyway (0 years/30000 miles instead of 2 years/24,000 miles). Chad reluctantly corrected it and initialed the correction. So you have it. My car buying experience with Hunter Hyundai. I like Nathan Derouen whom I think is sincere, courteous and tries hard to help. However, there was no follow through of anything after I agreed to buy the car, and it was an unnecessary long-drawn process of waiting for an available business manager to go over my paperwork (unfortunately Chad was apparently overworked as he had no clue of my paperwork). Will I recommend Hunter Hyundai? Yes but with reservation. I must also mention that Nathan Derouen is also fairly new to Hunter Hyundai, I believe he has been working for Hunter for 3 months when I bought the car. So both Nathan and Chad are new employees, Nathan is far superior as far as customer service is concerned.
