CompetitionSubaru (Rodney McCabe)

by eddie_23 on 09/11/2018

This is the second Forester purchased from Competition Subaru. This is our third Forester overall. Rodney McCabe quickly understood what we were looking for and provided a friendly purchasing environment. He went out of his way to insure we were happy with the vehicle.

What a wonderful experience

by OliverS on 07/29/2018

My wife and I have been to numerous car shows looking at the Subaru Ascent. We had a great experience dealing with Tim McCrum. He was very pleasant and helpful throughout the entire process. We pre-ordered the car without a test drive. We are Subaru Tribeca owners and wanted to upgrade our vehicle. Tim was very forthright and honest about various details about the car If he was unsure he always got back to us with any updated information he could provide. I would definitely recommend Competition Subaru for any Subaru purchase. Ask for Tim McCrum when you get there he was awesome.

disrespectful and inconsiderate

by hnadim on 03/24/2015

So I dealt with so called Jeff and he basically had no loyalty towards his costumer I applied for a credit check towards a new wrx and sat with them for an hour and a half tool they closed and he said he will call me 1st thing in the morning with a reply but guess what the text day they got the reply saying I needed a cosigner and of course since he can't benefit from me he didn't bother calling me to tell me i got denied and I had to run after him all day to get a reply and after I get h him on the phone he hangs up in my face this guy can't call him a man is a disgrace to sales and represents every wrong in the sales department. Guess what I got the cosigner and that dealer last my business because of this [non-permissible content removed].

Two Thumbs Down Experience

by rukiddingme7 on 09/12/2013

Saw a Car at this dealership in the used car dept....Loved the car....had to sell mine first though....Phil the salesman was great and most accommodating in letting me test drive (several times) that particular vehicle. The more I drove it.. the more I wanted it...he suggested I trade in my car, (a high mileage, luxury car in pristine condition) and I told him that they would never give me what I wanted to get for the car, that I was better off selling it on my own. They did the appraisal anyway. I thought the appraisal fair but still it was much lower than I could get on my own. After a few days I decided I would make the trade solely because I liked the other car so much. I didn't want to lose it When I showed up at the dealership another women who test drove the car after me bought it. Oh well....Just my luck...wasn't meant to be....I went back to dealership a week later to see what else they might have, (they do get in some nice used cars) I pulled up and their sits the car I was interested in. Wow, I thought it was sold....seems like the women who bought it did not qualify for a loan) Hey..maybe it was meant to be. So I tell Phil...Ok lets do our deal then, I want the car, I'll trade mine in for it, we can do it now.....Now mind you I'm excited...this was meant to be.....(Not so quick) I am informed that they can't find the appraisal they did on my car from a week ago. No problem we will do it again! It's not like I don't remember what we quoted you a week ago said the salesman So I sit for 45 minutes while they redo it again, the appraiser even commented on how clean my car was inside and out, "don't see too many in this good of a condition anymore" she said. So bottom line they come back with an appraisal for $2,500 less than the original...I'm like Huh? So I take a walk...Guess It wasn't meant to be after all. A week Later I get a call from Carol, (the internet sales manager) who asks me about my experience at their dealership, so I tell her exactly what I just told you all. She seemed a bit flabbergasted by the story and told me she would rectify this situation and would get back to me. I was like yay!!! maybe meant to be.. not....Carol never called me back.... well I shouldn't say that, she pretty much calls me once a week and asks me the same question...you know the one about my experience. It[s kinda annoying at this point and probably the main reason I'm even writing this review. Got a call from Carol today, but once I told her who I was...see told me she didn't call me...I'm not on her list....(LOL) Hey. I just pressed redial on a missed call and got Carol again how did that happen? damn cell phone auto (no pun intended) correct..you read into this for whatever you want...To be fair I'm not saying the people at this dealership are bad people...just totally incompetent and disappointing. Basically..I would blame management... not these people. Would I buy a car from them, no, recommend them to people I know and love, how could I? I'm not saying don't buy a car from them either, I am saying proceed with Caution. And Please If anyone reads this that knows Carol...tell her to take me off her calling list...Please....she is starting to treat me like I'm a thorn in her side....

Not helpful. Used car dirty.

by Waldi1 on 07/20/2013

I went to this dealership to check out a used Outback a couple of months ago. It was filthy and smelled of cigars. When asked about that, the salesman said: 'Oh, we clean the cars before the customer takes possession.' Very strange way of not impressing potential customers. I lost all interest in their Outback. I called up today because I saw the Outback I wanted from a private owner to ask if they can tell me if there are any warranties left on the car. The answer from the used car salesman mgr: 'Oh, nooo, I can't do that!' So I call up Sayville Subaru with the same request for warranty info. Sayville answer: 'No problem. Let me put you through to the service dept and they will help you.' You make your own mind up. :)

Watch the True Cost

by billnet2 on 01/10/2013

Sales staff are very nice and professional. No high pressure. Initial price presented sounded great. Upon further review... Car accessory options are priced above MSRP (as Subaru site warns - dealer prices may vary). Not terribly higher - but higher. Package price is correct. They say they are selling the car at dealer cost - but dealer cost includes charging $60 for gas (Subaru includes it free) and unwrapping the car ($15). Could be more. Then they add on (after you agree to a price) an additional $349 dealer prep. So be aware of what you are really paying. Financing rate was terrific and as represented. No last minute surprises or pressure to add extras. Straight forward.

Love my Subaru; love my dealership

by gms4868 on 10/11/2012

After having purchased and/or leased vehicles for over 40 years, with varying degrees of satisfaction, buying our Subaru Outback at Competition Subaru was a surprisingly pleasant experience. The sales, finance and service staffs were courteous, professional. and patient. There was no pressure to buy and the delivery process was excellent. The salesman has already followed up with correspondence and a phone call.

Competition Subaru...THE WORST

by toyotamike85 on 12/08/2011

Let me start by giving some back ground info of myself. I worked in the Auto Industry for 6 years as a factory trained and certified Technician for Toyota. I am a NYS inspector and have worked at several Toyota dealer ships on the island. I know how dealerships operate, I saw it 1st hand for many years... Competition Subaru, is one of the WORST dealerships I have ever had the privilege of dealing with. Approximately 2 weeks ago, I took my mother there to look into buying a Subaru. I already own one myself and wanted her in for the safety, reliability and the AWD that the cars come with. We went in and met with our salesmen, who at 1st surprised me because he didn't come off as your stereo typical sales men. My mother had her heart set on an 09 GT Impreza. The car has low mileage, no accidents etc. It was however VERY dirty and needed a PROPER detailing badly. It also had one door ding that I knew for a fact would come out. I had seen guys pull dents like these at the dealer numerous times... I looked the car over, and other then it being very dirty, it was good to go with the exception of drivers side seat heater element being in-op. I told the salesmen VERY specifically that I wanted the car professionally detailed, which in my opinion means WASHED, CLAYED, and Wheeled with a compound before hand waxing. I also wanted the seat heater fixed before delivery. My mother made the mistake of telling them she was buying the car cash because after that, that was when it went down hill from there. After that point I could tell anything we said went in one ear and out the other. I could tell this was happening...so much so that before we left I even took the sales guy outside and explained to him again about the seat, dent, and the detail. He assured that when we took delivery the car would be done correctly. We showed up 4 days later to take delivery and as I am walking towards the car I could see INSTANTLY the car was NOT DETAILED. It was simply washed, tire shined and some terrible spray wax job. The car is black and anyone who owns a black car (like myself) knows how important a proper detail is especially with Subarus very soft and thin paint. The DENT was also STILL THERE. We then got some BS excuse the dent guy couldnt get it out, which is and WAS total BS. My mother, who was very much looking forward to who new car was very upset. Even more so when I found out that the heated seat was also NOT FIXED either! We told them we would not be taking delivery of the car that day and we would come back when it was done properly. Please keep in mind I am traveling from the east end of the island to smithtown as well. Now, again a few days later we arrive to pick up the car. They assured us it was all done. The dent is gone, the detail is much better (not as good as I wanted but my mother was happy) but guess what?? THE SEAT HEATER WAS STILL BROKEN! but hey, they put it on order so that is ok right?? Because I definitely feel like coming back out from the east end at gas prices near 3.90$ a gallon for super. That night, they tried to RUSH us out of there as fast they can...so fast that they gave us the key and shook our hands before we even gave them the check for the car or even had any paper work on it...REAL professional set of folks we are dealing with here... After we got done with the paper work, they hand us A KEY...1 Key...No fob/remote. When I inquired it was " ummm your sales men isnt here and we dont know if there are any other keys". So we take the car and they call and tell us the next day that they ordered a Key and Fobs for it and they will program them when they put the new seat heater in. Yesterday we drove back out there again, and dropped the car off. The service writer seemed like an OK guy. He called a few hours later and said it was all done and we can pick it up whenever. Today we drove back out there and guess what...there is only one key fob...When I inquired he said the used car dept only would cover the cost of one...SO my question is why when they called to say the car was done didnt they say "Hey your car is done, by the way used car dept only will pay for one fob would you like us to program a second one so you have a full set?" I have NEVER in all my time at the dealers ever seen a a used car go out with out 2 complete sets of Keys and Fobs. Needless to say I inquired with our salesmen and I guess since he already cashed his commission check I got a BS excuse that they only supply what the car comes with when they get it. I was so aggravated at this point, I told my Mother lets go, ill take it to Metric Subaru where Dave Brown works and has PROFESSIONALS employed there and we will give them the business of buying and programming the remote. Moral of the story, if you want a jerk job go see the amazing staff at Competition Subaru...You will be guaranteed to get jerked around in every possible direction. If it was for the fact that they had the exact car my mother wanted, we would have never gone through with buying it..

Do not use this dealership

by snewman1 on 09/28/2011

Went looking for a 2011 legacy 2.5LTD. Staff was very friendly at first. When I called to negotiate a deal the salesmen that I had been working with, I was told it was his day off so another salesmen was assigned to help me. We negotiated a fair price and I asked that he fax me documents containing the offer so I could then leave a deposit. After four hours and multiple phones nothing was faxed. First I was told that he forgot about it. Then he was to busy. Finally I was told that I had to call back the next day so the original salesmen could do it. Well I knew what that meant. The next day when I called, the original salesmen had no knowledge of the deal and the other salesmen mysteriously forgot about the terms of the agreement. Then the sales manager came back to me with a number that was supposedly 300 below invoice. The kicker is that first number they gave when i went into the dealership was lower and it was supposedly 200 below invoice. Did they not think I took notes? This is why people hate car salesmen. In the end using a free internet service I was able to get a 2012 legacy 2.5LTD for the price I wanted.

Finally, an honest dealership!!

by mbb5 on 02/07/2011

My husband and I spend the month of January looking for an honest Subaru car dealer to purchase our new Forester from. Prior, we looked at all review for long Island Subaru dealers near us, read all we can on scam techniques to watch out for, read all of Consumer Reports articles, checked out invoices, Kelly BB, Edmonds and pretty much everything possible. We were completely turned off by the first 3 dealers we went to. They each tried to use a few of the scam techniques we’ve read about. Completely turned off and ready to throw in the towel, I ran into a review about Competition Subaru at St. James Long Island. I was a bit hesitant because not only was it 1 ½ hours away from our home but there was only one reviewer. Ahhh, but what an interesting review this was… it told about two of the previous dealers that we had gone to and the dishonesty there was, exactly as we experienced it first-hand. At the end of the review the gentleman goes on to say what a pleasure it was for him to do business with Competition Subaru, a new dealership. We decided to take the ride to St James and met with our salesman Damon, first honest salesman I’ve ever met!! What an amazingly fast transaction this was. We did haggle the price and with no unnecessary added fees and no tricks or greed, we were at a very fair price in about 15 minutes of us being there. Picked up our new car 2 days later and made a couple of new friends while there.
