Hyundai service dept. can't accurately inspect Hyundai vehicles

by catrescuer1 on 09/08/2022

On 8/5/2022, I had a complete vehicle inspection performed on a used 2010 Hyundai Elantra I was considering purchasing from another dealership nearby. I was told by the Suntrup Hyundai service advisor that the only concerns with the vehicle were that it needed an air filter and had about 50% brake life left. The day after purchasing the vehicle, I discovered that it made a high pitched squeal when first driven after it sat overnight. I called and left a message about this, but I did not receive a call back. I took the car to my local Firestone on 8/17/2022 to look into the noise, and it needed two new belts (AC and alternator) and the battery failed inspection and needed replaced (and was apparently the wrong size). These are expensive repairs that would have made me reconsider purchasing this vehicle. I emailed the Hyundai dealership about this via their website on 8/17/2022, but got no response. I reported this to the BBB, and Suntrup refused to accept any responsibility. I have since reported this to the MO Attorney General's office and Hyundai Corporate. I am exceptionally disappointed that a Hyundai dealer did not properly inspect and diagnose issues with a Hyundai vehicle.

Disrespectful

by artd2016 on 07/23/2016

David Tranchilla at Suntrup Hyundai is rude, disrespectful, and wasted our time. We wanted to negotiate the price of a demo since it had stains in the back and scratches on the door, plus it is a car that has miles and left the lot. He gave an initial price of only $900 under a new car. We gave a counteroffer with room to negotiate that included adjustment for mileage and wear and tear (including scratches and stains in the car). After hearing we had pre approved financing, he came back with a price $100 above the initial offer. Had printed out an email of me saying I thought the first price sounded good (an email I wrote before we had met or saw the car) and circled the whole thing in thick, black marker. He had no interest in selling us a car. It was also like pulling teeth to get the new car price because he knew the demo wasn't a very good deal. And he seemed annoyed that we had a lot of questions about the car including how long it had been on the lot (almost a year). We asked to see a vehicle history report and he didn't want to produce that either. I felt very disrespected and insulted by David who obviously did not want to work with us.

Disappointing Experience

by alymae1010 on 06/22/2016

I’m writing this review based on a recent used car purchase from Suntrup Hyundai. I had located an electric vehicle online that I wanted to purchase, so I contacted the dealership and let them know I’d be there on Saturday morning to look at it. I brought all of my paperwork along in order to do a quick trade-in of my vehicle too. After a short test drive, I decided to make the purchase. Despite having everything in order, I spent over 4 hours at the dealership (I didn’t even finance). After a couple of days, I went to charge my electric vehicle only to find there was no charging cord. After initially contacting Suntrup, assuming it was an oversight, I was told that chargers are options on these vehicles, so they would not be providing one since I already got a great deal on the car. I told them that these were not optional equipment, so the salesman waited to hear from his General Manager. After a few more weeks of not hearing anything, I again asked if they would make this right. This time, I was told that used cars don’t always come with all original equipment, so they wouldn’t be providing one. I know that I should have made sure it was in the vehicle before leaving, but I incorrectly assumed that selling an electric car with no charger, and not mentioning that, would be inane. On top of that issue, I also had to contact the dealership in order to receive my title transfer paperwork after 2 months. They also forgot to have me fill out paperwork while at the dealership, so they sent that to me and I had to return it to a UPS store for delivery. I could have happily dealt with that minor inconvenience normally, but not on top of every other issue I had with this dealership. I don’t recall ever writing a bad review, but this experience was so disappointing, I had to share in hopes of saving someone the same headaches.

Terrible Service

by ESEF4 on 07/03/2014

In 2011 my husband and I leased a 2011 Elantra from Suntrup Hyundai West, which was a colossal mistake with an unraveling of negative consequences. We had no intention of leasing when we arrived, but our salesperson (Kurt) talked us into it. Kurt was aware that we were unsure about leasing and not versed in the process, given we should have been more knowledgeable about the process before signing on the dotted line. My husband even asked him point blank about the process of returning the car, what constituted normal wear and tear, and if we would be subject to any other fees upon returning the car. We have since found out that Kurt was less than forthcoming, something in hindsight, I should have expected. Three years later, Monday, June 30, 2014, it was time to decide whether to purchase the leased vehicle or return it. I didn't care for the car, but it got good gas mileage and my husband drives an above average amount of miles for work. So, we decided that at a good price, we would purchase the car. However, unbeknownst to us, Roger, the general manager, was not able/willing to negotiate a purchase price beyond what was on our lease. Combined with what we paid throughout the course of the lease and the price to purchase the car, we would have paid well over MSRP and what we thought the car was worth. Additionally, we are in the process of trying to reduce monthly payments due to an impending rise in our monthly expenses, something we expressed to Roger. So, we decided to not purchase the car. However, because Kurt neglected to inform us of certain fees that accompanied not purchasing the car, we felt backed into a corner, having to pay too much out of pocket and then still in need of a car for my husband. Roger was extraordinarily rude. When I expressed the fact that I was frustrated with the unknown fees, he basically pawned it off as someone else's problem, saying he just got to the store six months ago and didn't know anything. He also said he didn't even know who the salesperson was, like he couldn't easily access that information. My husband, thankfully, remembered. Ultimately, Roger was unsympathetic and rude. When I again stated how dissatisfied I was, his actual words were, "Fine, if you want to be that way." My husband and I left that day needing to think about our decision. We felt that financially we had to buy the car due to out of pocket expenses, but we did not want to purchase the car. We came back the next day intending to just cut our losses and purchase the car. In fact, Roger told us to come back that day and that he would be there until 6pm. We arrived at 5:20ish and intentionally did not bring our six-year-old daughter because of the time involved in completing paperwork. Well, Roger had us fill out some paperwork and basically told us it was too late to do anything that day. He said he would take care of everything on his end and have papers ready for us to sign the next day (Wednesday). For the third day in a row, my husband and I went to the dealership. Upon arriving, Roger tried to talk us into a new lease of a different car, at a price of $310+ per month. In fact, his exact words were, "I have the deal of a lifetime for you." I was astounded and offended. First, we wanted to get in and out to sign paperwork. Second, he was very much aware that we were trying to reduce monthly payments. This would have been an increase of at least $90 per month. Of course our answer was a solid no, which did not sit well with Roger. He kept saying that he was trying to help us out. How he was trying to help us is beyond me. How is increasing our monthly payments when we very clearly told him we wanted to reduce payments the "deal of a lifetime"? Unfortunately, this type of behavior is where people develop a negative connotation with car salespeople. At this point I was obviously frustrated. Here I am sitting in a dealership for two hours with my six-year-old trying to take care of something that was supposed to take a minimal amount of time. I expressed this to Roger, who immediately cut me off and said things like, "I've got more than just you [to deal with]" and "I don't need this kind of stuff." In fact, I was typing his distasteful and uncouth quotes word for word as they were spewing out of his ill-mannered mouth. I told him that whether it was of any consequence to him, I would definitely be posting a review of his dealership and behavior. He said he didn't care. He went on to say that he had to pay "lots of fees" too when a leased car was brought in. I asked him to what fees he was referring and he said, "Just fees." He could not/would not identify or elaborate on said fees, but was defensive and deflective. Roger's behavior was so ludicrous that there was even another employee that apologized for Roger's offensiveness multiple times. Again, the sad part of the situation is that my husband and I felt, for lack of a better word, stuck into buying the car. We completed the transaction with the finance manager, whose demeanor was much improved from Roger's, and we left, certain never to return. Not only did Roger exhibit a personal lack of character and concern for his reputation, but he managed to ruin the Suntrup name for me, and he ruined it for my many others, including my mother who will be purchasing a vehicle in the next week.

Beware!

by jeanbean on 09/12/2013

The service department told me I needed a $400 repair right away, or the car would continue to deteriorate. When it was decided that the dealership would have to pay, they changed their mind and said that the repair wasn't necessary and the car could stay like it was indefinitely. Seems shady to me!

Poor Customer Service

by JeanBean on 09/12/2013

Bought a used car, and had a problem after the sale. My salesman, Tommy, was rude and hateful, and actually HUNG UP on me on the phone. When I said that I would not be returning to this dealership, the sales manager said, "If you think you can hurt us by not shopping here, go ahead." Horrible customer service.

Bait and Switch/ False Advertising

by gizmo26 on 03/17/2012

Once I got to the dealership and looked at the exact same cars I saw online, and saw they were marked up about $4000 for misc packages and whatnot, I walked right off the lot. I have heard horrible things about Suntrup and even saw they had an D rating from the Better Business Bureau but I figured I would still go and see, because I figured there was no was they could advertise a car on the internet for $4000 cheaper than it actually was on the lot. That is called Bait and Switch. Well come to find out all the bad reviews and BBB rating proved to be right. I am not sure how they continue to get away with this but it's ridiculous. The only reason they can advertise that they will give you 5k over Kelly Blue Book is because they put unheard of packages or unwanted packages on every new car that conveniently takes the sticker price up about $4000-$5000. Please beware of anything that is too good to be true; because it most likely is, and thank you Suntrup for reminding us all of that.

Not happy at all!

by kingtj on 09/01/2011

I made a web-based appointment to take my car in after recalling some very positive reviews of Suntrup I read a year or two ago. Unfortunately, the website was the best part of the whole process -- and even it has some flaws. The online schedule claimed they had available appointments as early as the same evening, but I needed to drop it off in the evening -- so I scheduled it for 7AM the next morning, and planned on leaving the key in a night drop slot around 9PM. When I got there, I was surprised to see they were still open! The website had incorrect service hours posted. I proceeded to drive into the service bay but no advisor was anywhere to be seen. After waiting a few minutes, I gave up and parked my car in their lot and walked back up. THEN, a guy was there but he was busy eating dinner or something, and practically pretended I didn't exist. He finally mumbled something about bringing my car back up to the bay, which I did ... only to find he was gone AGAIN! When he finally came back, he took a LONG time checking in my car (what did I do the online appointment stuff for??) and seemed to have no record of everything I had typed in on the website. The next evening, I tried to call to see if my car was ready (should have been, for the relatively quick things I needed done). Suntrup's phone rang forever before some young guy answered, and immediately forwarded me to "service", where it rang and rang and nobody picked up. I had to call 2 more times to finally reach someone in service, and when I did? The guy sounded like he was deaf or something. VERY hard to understand on the phone. I knew it was hopeless to discuss much of anything about my car with him, but it turned out that didn't matter because they didn't even START on my car yet! I don't know what kind of operation they run out there these days, but I'm almost ready to just come get my car and take it elsewhere .....

Seriously?

by ozark_kayak on 08/27/2011

I know the Elantra is a hot selling car. But, the addition $2400 markup for the "dealer benefit package," which was nothing more than car washes, oil changes and a service loaner car, was a bit over the top. Our negotiations quickly broke down as the dealer was quite firm about wanting that extra profit. Did not help that the salesman implied that I was the greedy one for wanting to purchase the car closer to the MSRP. Hope to purchase an Elantra. But, not at this dealer.

Trying to gouge customers on popular models

by fmcpherson on 07/13/2011

Contacted the dealership (Kyle Ketcherside)for a quote on a 2011 Hyundai Elantra. Quoted me a price which was $3,000 over MSRP. I was told that this was because it was a popular model and that they weren't running a "non-profit" company. So, instead of trying to build a long-term relationship with a customer, he preferred to gouge me for a quick profit. I went to another local dealership and bought the same car for nearly $600 under MSRP.

DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR HERE THERE TECHS ARE NOT ASE TECHS

by britman2 on 02/13/2011

We took our car to have an iol change as we where told by Suntrup it was time to change the oil and rotate the tires . We got there as they opened the guy opening the service bay doors i said to my wife i hope hes not the one working on the car well he was . We where told it would take an hour to do a 15 minute job well 2 hours later it was taken out for a test drive by the so called tech . Ive never known a car need a test drive after an oil change and rotation . So they told us it was just being washed and would be out front for us . So we paid the 70 bucks for the oil change yes i did say 70 bucks we got out front and the car had , had a hosing down big water spots all over it that was the wash it never went in like that so the tech sorry so called tech that had taken the car on a test drive failed to notice that the car now pulled to the right and that the left front was now out of balance all tire pressures where up tp 40 tire rating it 35 . now i get it home and redo the tire pressures yes the tires had been rotated but not how they should of been . The car has a tire pressure sensor on each wheel so when you rotate the tires your meant to take the tire off the rim and mount it on another so the right sensor is on the right tire well not on my car the left front is now the left rear the left rear is now the right front and so on i have never had such bad customer service and work done on my cars ever before . we asked then if they could reset the oil life sensor we where told we dont know how to do that it should be in your owners manual we said we dont have one we have asked for one where still waiting a year later for it . we drove off the lot stopped at Bommarito chevy dealer across the street and told them that the Suntrup tech didnt know how to reset the oil sensor the guy at the service centre pulled my car in to the bay showed me how to do it and even thanked me for coming in that five minutes at Bommarito was better than the crap i got at Suntrup .i emailed Suntrup and told them i will be billing them for the correct rotation on my car and the cost of having it detailed to get the waterspots off the car after there so called wash im still waiting for them to reply to me and my car is NEVER going to them again 70 bucks for an oil change i could of gotten one at Walmart for 19.99 and got the tires rotated the right way and like i tell every one NEVER BUY FROM SUNTRUP THEY WILL BAIT AND SWITCH YOU AND NEVER TAKE YOU CAR IN FOR A SERVICE AS THERE TECHS DONT KNOW WHAT THERE DOING

Very bad impression

by zmarie08 on 03/13/2010

I've been considering the new Sonata and stopped by this dealership Feb. 27,2010 to get some questions answered. I asked the salesman (I think his name was Fred) the difference between the 2010 and 2011 Sonatas especially since they were offering big rebates on the 2010. He proceeded to show me features on the 2011 Sonata and then pulled out a sheet for us to start talking terms. I backed off and said that I wasn't looking to buy that day but just wanted information. He advised me to make an appointment and come back on Tuesday, gave me his card and the bum rush. I was there probably 4 minutes. I threw away the card and left. I was still furious 20 minutes later and came back to complain to a manager. While I was waiting I walked around the lot and looked at the sticker prices on the 2011 Sonatas in the lot. I was surprised to see the 2011 Sonata Ltd. priced $2K higher than MSRP. As I checked out the sticker more closely I saw it was because of all the bogus dealer mark up fees like marketing and other junk. That sealed it for me. The next weekend I went to [another dealership] and had the exact opposite experience. But I'll save those raves for their review. Long story short, I'm buying my Hyundai from [other dealership]. Between the salesman who only gives good service on Tuesdays and the greedy markups, who needs the hassle? Who needs Suntrup?

Great sales experience

by orf2119 on 12/18/2009

I was very impressed with the entire sales staff at Suntrup Hyundai. They went above and beyond with the entire process. If you are in the market stop by and ask for Tony. They did not have what I was looking for on the lot and found something out of state. I apprecite him making the car buying process as painless as possible.

Suntrp Hyundai Service

by pahefner01 on 08/08/2007

I purchased an 02 XG350L at the Dean Team Hyundai dealer. After my first service experience there I met another Hyundai owner and asked where he had his car serviced. He told me he bought his car and had it serviced at Suntrup Hyundai and had nothing but praise for them. The next time I needed service I went to Suntrup. They were as good as it gets with servicing vehicles. I asked them to remove the Dean Team license frame from my XG and put theirs on. I've bought my 06 Azera Limited with the Ultimate Package from them based on their service and they also had the best price beating the Costco dealer by about $1000. Suntrup Hyundai does the best they can do to keep their customers happy. The only problem is so many people have found out about their service that they are very busy. They even have people driving from other states for service.
