My husband and I were recently shopping for a 2010 VW Tiguan in May 2010 and began with our local dealer, Howard Cooper. We were absolutely unimpressed with our salesman who according to the plaques around the dealership has been the #1 salesman for the last 3 years. While we appreciated his willingness to cut to the chase with prices, we were shocked that he was completely unwilling to match or beat prices that we obtained from other dealers around the area -- something that Howard Cooper explicitly promises to do in its advertising and on its website. What ultimately drove us away, though, was this salesman's attitude of disdain. We were considering purchasing a demo and wanted to know about its maintenance record, accident history, etc., but he would not even dignify these basic -- and obvious -- questions with answers (he acted as if we were out of line to even be asking such questions). Overall, his approach to working with us was astonishingly blase, lazy, and indifferent. He did not seem to care whether we bought the car or not, as if his sales numbers were so good that he didn't need to try. The good news is that in the age of online research and shopping one is no longer forced to put up with such behavior and poor business practices.
