A costly life lesson, courtesy of Groove Mazda

by MichaelC13 on 07/26/2017

When someone bought the used car I was eyeing, Groove Mazda stepped up and offered me a generous price for a brand-new Mazda 3 to make up for it. At $16,500, it was only a thousand dollars more than what I had set aside. I asked numerous times that $16,500 was the final, out-the-door price and was sent a breakdown of the fees, taxes, and rebates confirming it was. I agreed over the phone, and that’s when the numbers changed. While I made the 300 mile trip to the dealership, they worked on the contract, adding $3,700 in extended warranty and protection packages without my consent or knowledge. I would never have accepted these additional charges had I been given the choice. I sat down to fill out the paperwork, unaware the deck had already been stacked against me. The finance plan that looked so good, was based on a $20,200 price tag, not $16,500. The warranty benefits I thought came standard, were the extra items I never agreed to. When I questioned one of the totals, the finance manager broke the numbers down and it came to $16,500. Perfect. I thought we were on the same page, but we were thousands of dollars apart. Ultimately, it is my responsibility to know how much I’m paying before signing anything. I was supposed to have seen the extra charges they’d added and make them redo the contract. But I didn’t. I trusted the people I was working with to have my best interests in mind, but all they saw were dollar signs. They offered me an amazing deal to keep me at the negotiating table, and then they recollected those savings by adding upgrades without my permission. Why would I be okay paying $20,200, after stressing $16,500 again and again and again? The answer is: They didn’t care. It is my fault for not adding the numbers myself. It is my fault for being naïve, for not asking enough questions, and for trusting the experts. I signed the contracts and realized a day later what I’d missed. I was upset and embarrassed and frustrated with myself for not catching what seemed so obvious later. I emailed the general manager, general sales manager, and the sales associate and finance manager I worked with to explain how disappointed I was with how I was treated. I have NOT heard back from anyone. There’s nothing more I can do but post reviews of my experience on as many sites as possible to prevent others from making the same mistakes. No matter how nice the staff is to work with, don’t let your guard down. Don’t assume the price you agreed upon is the price that will be on the contract. And don’t expect Groove Mazda to be any better than the car dealers of the past. I love my new car. I just wish Groove Mazda had enough respect for their customer, and his budget, to not upcharge him without asking. Buyers beware.

Wonderful to work with

by Tiroler085 on 12/31/2016

Sara was helping us and she was amazing. The whole experience was great and not pushy at all. The price was also by far the best in town as I got quotes from all other dealers in town too and everyone else was just trying to upswell me even though I told them we were mainly looking at the bottom line! If you are looking for new Mazda I can only recommend Groove!

Finance guy is more than shady

by Jfadrive on 12/26/2015

Will never go here again. Finance guy was intimidating and aggressive/angry with me and my husband when I questioned an increase in price. Somehow I left and paid more than the advertised purchase price. I'm not talking taxes, fees, etc, I'm talking the literal price of the car. He told us the price of the car went up because taxes went up. He literally said that 3 times, each time more angrily than the next. I was very uncomfortable and just wanted to get out if there as soon as possible. We had already paid full cash for the entire purchase so if we didn't take it they would have charged us fees. We had no choice but to be bullied and abused. Never go there. I have proof, pictures, of the original price and then what we ended up having to pay. Why would the price of a car go up because taxes went up?? The out the door price would but not the price of the actual car, that's absurd.

Horrible People!!!

by chris11427 on 03/27/2014

Upon driving the car initially after purchase I had a severe allergic reaction with swollen eyes, a skin rash, and difficulty breathing. I had to take perscription allergy medication and an asthma inhaler several times to subside the reaction. This is a box type SUV that, after speaking with some law enforcement agents and medical professionals, I believe had methamphetimes manufactured inside it. The dealership was closed the next day. I called first thing Monday and received no call back for hours, so I took the vehicle in Monday afternoon. The sales manager, sale person, and finance manager all stated that this was false, and I should continue to drive the car, despite having a severe allergic reaction and it would eventually go away. I had to make a very big scene and finally they agreed to take the car back but charged me $499. This is a hazard to public health and safety.

Tracy was great to work with...

by TheKernal on 03/06/2014

Tracy d. sold me a 2014 Mazda3 s Grand Touring. The whole process was fairly painless and the other people we spoke to were also friendly and helpful. I'm enjoying my new car and the staff at Groove Mazda made the experience unlike others I've encountered because of the no-hassle nature of the deal.

Friendly, low pressure

by syndic8r on 10/29/2013

I came in and looked around and test drove vehicles on 3 different occasions. On each occasion, the salesman was friendly, knowledgeable, but not pushy. He did ask if I was ready to buy, but didn't "go to the tower" or do any of the typical salesman things we're all familiar with. It made me very comfortable with the experience and comfortable with the dealership

Hassle-free shopping

by joyce28 on 07/10/2011

I requested quotes through Edmunds and you can really tell which dealers jack up their prices and which are willing to provide their best offers up front. Groove came in with a reasonable and fair quote, and having seen where the baseline was from other dealers, I felt comfortable coming in and asking them to knock some off the bottom. My Groove sales person was straight forward and laid back. I was in and out and and driving my new car home in no time at all!

A really good experience.

by frameloss on 02/10/2011

The information on Edmunds really allowed me to negotiate a great deal on a car. I used the TMV value as a starting point for negotiations, and then had five different dealers working on numbers for me over the Internet. Groove Mazda came in with the lowest number on exactly the car I wanted. They were well below TMV even after adding back in a handling fee (which none of the Mazda dealerships in Colorado were willing to negotiate.) They had the car moved off of the lot for me when I arrived. And it only took a couple of hours for the entire process, including assessing my trade-in. They gave me a fair price on my trade-in, which was definitely not ready for resale and would have to go to auction. The finance department was very easy to deal with, and were upfront about everything--no hidden costs, and were able to get me a great deal on financing--below what I had already pre-approved from my credit union. They did try to upsell on extended warranties, maintenance, etc., but they were not pushy about it nor were they persistent. I am very satisfied with my dealings with Groove Mazda.

My experience with Burt

by bheilbrunn on 12/31/2007

I went to Burt to buy a Mazda 3. I specifically asked for a car with antilock brakes because the safety feature is important to me as I drive a lot. They didnt give me an opportunity to see the dealer invoice which was taken off before I saw the car. I asked repeatedly whether the car had antilook brakes and I was repeatedly assured it did. Apparantly the brakes are a high cost option. Well I would have paid the costs and I would not have bought the car I did without antilock brakes. I contacted Mazda but they ignored me. There are other Mazda dealers in town pick one of them.
