Guiding a Wife through the purchase of Her first New Car

by B1rds on 12/24/2014

My wife was looking for her first new car and wanted minimum assistance, from me, in the process. After much on-line shopping she narrowed it down to a Hyundai Elantra. At Hyundai of Cottonwood she was met in the lot by George Benatz who approached her with a friendly hello and asked if he could help. She explained what she was after and he showed her a variety of 2015 Elantras. George did an excellent job of pointing out all the features of the vehicleand providing her an opportunity to test drive any vehicles she wished to try. When pricing was discussed it was slightly above what she expected to pay. So George showed her a new 2014 in the color she wanted. She liked the car but no deal was reached the first day and George did not push he attitude and behavior was one of assistance. On the second day my wife brought in her Kia Amanti (purchased very used 4 years ago) as a trade-in. An offer could not be made due to it being too late in the day to get a true value on the Amanti. As this was Saturday and the Dealership was closed on Sunday George made an offer to allow my wife to drive the Elantra over the weekend and bring it back on Monday evening after she finished work. On Sunday and Monday my wife had the opportunity to really try the vehicle out to see if she wanted to make the investment. Late Monday afternoon I received a call from a Hinda dealership 60 miles away with a very attractive price on a new 2015 Honda Accord. I had also received an attractive offer on a 2015 Elantra from a dealership about 50 miles away. The Elantra a compact car and the Accord a midsized car are not directly comparable, however the driving comfort of a compact car and midsized car is comparable. After driving the Elantra back and forth the 40 miles round trip to work on Monday she liked the Elantra but realized it was not as comfortable as her Amanti a full-sized car. On Monday evening I met with my wife and George and explained the offers that had been made. George had already invested a fair amount of time in assisting my wife with the Elantra and my wife had spent considerable effort in trying the Elantra. George was not upset at the additional offers but was thankful because he could at least check with the Sales Manager and see if they could make a better offer. While George went to talk with the Sales Manager my wife expressed that maybe the midsized Honda might be a better choice but was not wanting to go the 60 miles to see their vehicles that late in the evening. George came back with a good offer however my wife was not sure at this point about the Elantra and went outside to think about it. I mentioned to George that maybe he should show my wife the midsized Hyundai Sonata (comparable with the Accord). It was already late and past closing time but George did not hesitate. Quickly getting a written price quote from the sales manager George brought a Sonata Sport around to the well lighted front of the dealership (as it was well past sunset and the stars were out). My wife looked the car over from the outside and as soon as she sat in the drivers seat and looked around the interior of this more spacious vehicle a look of satisfaction brightened her face. A quick test drive with George sitting up front with her and pointing out a few features but not interfering with her driving ended with her mind made up that the compact Elantra (a very nice vehicle) was not what she desired. My wife reviewed the very good proposal George and the dealership had provided and made the decision to purchase the Sonata. George and the Sales Manager completed the necessary paper work, signatures were scribbled and one and a half hours after closing time my wife happily drove home with a new Sonata. Before we left the dealership George made an appointment with my wife to return so he could spend a couple of hours with her and the car to be sure she understood everything about it. So, two days later on the morning before Christmas my wife returned and George (having already made the sale) spent several hours going over the owners manual with my wife, had the vehicle washed and polished, a bow put on it and a photo of her and the car was taken. Throughout this process George was the perfect Sales Consultant. Always respectful and courteous. Extremely patient and never pushy. His personality is honed to working the deal without appearing to be working.... like a true professional he makes it look easy. When presented with outside offers that seemed to undermine his George did not whine but took the opportunity to shine with true professionalism. The extra time he took after the sale was made to be sure my wife understood the operational features of the vehicle exceeded what I have observed in other sales consultants. My wife will always remember her first car buying experience as positive and exciting due to George Benatz, Certified Sales Consultant, who made it look all to easy.
