This car is a beast that just wants to keep going. 202,000 and I just had a number of wear & tear repairs but I think it's at the half life point roughly. Weather doesn't phase it and the rust is very minimal for a car I don't garage or baby in any way. Superb investment so glad I bought it new.

I bought this car brand new off the lot and 12 years, and 250,000 miles later, still running like new! Very very minimal maintenance required for this car! i have barely done oil changes and only other repairs were replacing sway bar, a sensor that went at about 180k, and thats it! Even mechanics have told me that this is one of the best cars that toyota has put out and i very much believe that.
Good amigo car

I've put 217k on my car, I commute to my job I do the maintenance on this vehicle myself, iridium plugs, serpentine belt, oil changes ac relay at 153k $90 at the dealers. I was a mechanic in the service, so not a problem, tires at 50k intervals, I put aftermarket rims on it after I lost a few hubcaps on the road, this vehicle has been a great investment and good amigo.

This car was given to me at 60,000 miles by my grandmother. I was young, did not know the value of having a car. This car survived the most rigorous trials a immature teen could put it through. Never failed through the abuse. Only thing that I can say I did correctly was change the oil at every 3-4K miles. I am now a more responsible, loyal owner to my Corolla with 110K miles on it now. It still runs like new. I will preach the value of this car to any and everybody. You simply cannot beat the craftsmanship that was invested in this vehicle. I love this car, and will drive it for a million miles!

I bought this car used, and it was ten years old and low mileage. I don't drive much usually, but have taken it on a couple of long trips. The suspension is a little rough, and it has some rattles. But I've had almost no repairs, and it's now fifteen years old. The design is pretty plain, nothing special. However, everything works. It's a practical choice, even though it was a little pricey for a ten year old economy car. The interior was the upgraded version for that time. No navigation or bluetooth.

First Toyota (and small car) ever purchased, I am very surprised and pleased that an economy compact can have such quality and comfort. Astounding gas mileage, fine handling and ride. Without cruise I too often find myself doing 80. Looking forward to Toyota's reputation of building cars that are long lasting with few repair needs.

Bought new in December 2002. Today (Feb 2013) the car is now 517,000 km. @ 420,000 km the strut was replaced. the right one started to leak. the other one is still ok but replaced as well as they needed to be replaced at the same time. @ 425,000 km. the front and rear wheel bearing on the driver's side were replaced. @ 475,000 km. the starter was replaced. @ 517,000 km. the sway bar link was replaced. others are just the normal maintenance like battery, oil changes, serpentine belt, transmission oil changes, air filter, cabin filters. The car drives like the day I drove it out of the dealership. The rest of the car is original...including the rotor. the car just starts and go in all weather

I too have been a Honda driver for over 10 years, and after considering the '02 Civic and the '02 Altima, but then found this '03 model that was the best value, size and design. (can you believe this is the once BORING Corolla?!!) It has a good price, great handling, great EPA MPG, great looks, bigger than a Civic, sits up higher, peppy/fun to drive. It's a Jetta, Lexus, and a Camry in one. The interior is simple, and comfortable, and has solid fit and finish. The flaws?: One major silly one... the driver side visor hits the mirror when you put it down (how did a designer miss this one!!!!?). Overall, this is probably the best value and fun in it's class.

I have 103000 miles on my 03 LE Corolla. This LE will last 400,000 miles just by changing the trans fluid every 10,000 ml, oil at 3,000 ml, spark-plugs at 10-15 months. Tires when worn. The higher wheel base keeps the car from scarping the curb. You can also repair (or find mechanics to repair this car) very cheaply! With premium or high octane gas I get 34cty/40hwy. And I drive at speeds of 70+mph! The speakers are fine but I hate the lame radio/DVD which is too hard to swap out and the space doesn't accommodate any of the popular MP3 players! The larger headlights are a welcomed improvement. The higher door and head room is a great improvement for my bike and computer stuff.
Could you ask for anything more?

Toyota has come up with a winner. STYLE, LOTS OF ROOM, Great gas milage and quiet. The lines of the car have moved closer to Camry then ever before. The whole family loves to drive this car. My wife is 5'4 and I'm over 6 feet and it is comfortable for both. The trunk space and rear seats have been stretched to the limits and provide ample space for any family.

Ten years ago I bought my 2003 Corolla LE brand new, and it has been rock solid in terms of reliability. In the ten years I've owned this car (115,000 miles) I have had only one repair that was not usual wear-and-tear (air conditioner went out). Everything else has stood the test of time. So I give this car a 5 in terms of value, build quality, and reliability. As for performance, comfort, and fun to drive, the Corolla is admittedly not top-of-the-line (you're not going to win races with this thing or feel like you're sitting in a recliner), and gas mileage by today's standards isn't spectacular. But, I trust this thing just as much today as I did the day I bought it and that says something.

I am the original owner of this car, I used to drive 1000 miles + per month in this car for about 2 years. I have not had one thing need maintenance, it is even on the original AC coolant. The only problems have been from other people dinging my car. Everything in the car still works great, just needs a tune up to improve power. With regular oil services and tire rotations, I have never had this car in any shop at all. Great purchase for reliability.

I do plenty of highway driving to and from work so I needed a car with GREAT gas mileage. This car (Corolla CE w/auto transmission)has been quite satisfying. I recently got 511 miles on a tank full of gas all highway!!! The car rides quiet and a great sounding cd player also.I sometimes forget when I get gas. I would recommend this car to anyone.I also use synthetic motor oil for better performance.
The best car ever.

I’ve had this 2003 Corolla since 2015. This car is nothing short of the best car ever made. It’s not flashy, but it simply is the cream of the crop. No issues at all in my 7 years of driving it. This thing might get 40 miles to the gallon on the highway.

I bought a new 2004 Impulse Red CE and I am very happy with my decision. The exterior styling is great. The interior is luxurious compared to the Honda Civic. If you compare the interior and exterior dimensions to those of the Honda, the Corolla takes it across the board. The car feels as fast as our 2001 Honda Accord dual exhaust V6. Brisk acceleration without going above 3,000 rpm. It cruises at 70 mph at a low 2,300 rpm. I mainly bought it for the way it looks as compared to the other 10 or so cars in it's class. It also has the lowest ADVERTISED mileage. Build quality and paint is really good.

This car is a compromise. It performs well generally, but lacks the engineering and careful design of a more expensive car, such as the old Volvo I owned previously. I've had two problems fixed under warranty. The trunk remote cable was replaced (wouldn't work), and a half- shaft seal was replaced after I noticed a transmission oil leak. Fuel economy is not that impressive for a small car. On balance, it's a decent car for the price, with enough space for a small family, good highway performance, and a nice range of standard features.

This is one of the best cars in the world for the price and more. I love my Corolla. Turns on a dime, great gas mileage avg 25-27 mpg at speeds of 80-90 all the time. Over 6 yrs ownership, and oil changes and tire rotations are your only maintenance items needed. Excellent ride, great interior, lots extras, @ 74,000 miles it still feels new, with new tires and struts, this will feel like a brand new car. Everyone that drives in my car, complements it in one way or another. Compare it to any car out there and it can compete. Better reliability than a BMW or Mercedes for half the money.

Had my car for almost 7 years now and I can say it has been great. Yeah, it's not a BMW, but its a easy drive, fuel efficient and has good room for the size. I recently upgraded to a high end VW Passat wagon, and even though it is classier I miss my Toyotas efficiency (wife drives it now).

I purchased my !st Corolla in 1989 (a 1984 for 3K with 45k miles on it) That car lasted me for 7 years with no problems. It finally died in 1996. I would have been happy if it lasted 3 years. Then I owned a Honda Accord from 1996 to 2004. I can not remember the problems but I was not nearly as satisfied with my Honda. I went back to the Toyota Corolla in 2004 and have been happy ever since. I purchased the car used with 12k miles. It now has 123k and I have not had a single problem. Just routine maintenance, replaced tires, oil, transmission fluid, batteries. I just love the great gas mileage. With gas at 3.00/gal, I fill it up for about 25 and go almost all week.

Let's talk about gas savings first. If you trade your current car that gets 25 mpg overall, and you drive the Corolla at 35 mpg @20,000 miles a year, you will save $700 per year (based on $3 a gallon gas). Multiply that amount by the number of years you plan to keep the car, and it's hard to say no. Second, compare roominess of the 2003 or newer Corolla to any mid-size vehicle, and you'll be pleasantly surprised at the amount of available space (including the roomy trunk)! Next, look at a consumer reports buying guide for reliability, safety, and resale value. Still not convinced to dump your gas hog? Take a Corolla for a test drive, and see for yourself, before gas prices spike again.
Hopeful but doubting...

Minor flaws of this car eventually led to a major disappointment. The air button broke and when it was repaired by Toyota, the dash became scratched since it is made from poor quality plastic. The car is ALL over the road on mildly windy days and I am in dire need of ABS that were unobtainable at my time of purchase on any Corolla model in my area. My worst gripe is the foul smell of rotten eggs that has been blowing out of my interior air vents everytime I turn on the heat. This smelly problem has been happenning since 1000 miles. Lastly, my brakes slip constantly at red lights and brief stops. Numberous attempts for redemption by Toyota have failed.

I have had this vehicle for over five years and haven't had one problem with it. It is snappy off the line and gets great gas mileage (32-34 mpg around town and 36-38 mpg on the highway). I would recommend this vehicle to anyone looking for a safe, reliable car with good gas mileage.

I purchased my last Corolla for 3000 dollars. Everything worked. Power everything. I drove it daily for 4 years without anything going wrong other than needing a new battery, then sold it for 3000 dollars. The car had 165000 miles on it when I sold it. I felt able to guarantee the reliability of it to the buyer. It still had a lot of life left. I have one a little newer but still old with high miles at 190000. the car runs and drives like a champ. It's got an exceptional engine. Period.

Reading these other neutral or negative reviews convinced me to write a quick review. These cars are amazing. They are extremely reliable! I have had a few different Toyotas (including the Corolla of course) and they all have been great cars (164k, one at 200k, another at 220k) The downsides are consistent with the price tag. Uncomfortable on long trips, and a loud ride . No complaints, comes with the territory. To address the repairs of previous reviewers, catalytic converters I understand. But $1200 for rear wheel bearings?!?! Takes 1 hr a side max labour and about 80-100 each hub assemble. Dont get screwed by your local mechanic then trash talk how expensive it is to keep and maintain lol. Third, you bought it at 200k like come on lol I digress you can’t go wrong. If you are looking for a reliable daily driver and your price range is meager, prepare to be bored, the Corolla is the best of the best.

I now have 17,600 miles on the car (8 months). Fuel mileage took a spike up after 12,000 accumulated. If I keep the speed between 60-70 mph, I can get 41 mpg fairly often. The automatic transmission has a "grade logic" feature that senses when you have crested a hill and are gaining speed down the other side with the throttle closed. The transmission will downshift to 3rd to assist braking when certain conditions have been met. Passing performance is quite good... so long as you have the engine above 3,500 rpm.

I inherited this car from my cousin in 2009. Today it still has less than 50,000 miles on it. It was always garaged, and it remains in excellent shape. The only major repairs have been the airbag recalls. No other parts replaced except for the usual stuff: tires-a battery-brakes-oil-and air filters including a cabin filter. The muffler and suspension are all original and I can't see any rust. The interior "wears like iron" even with an occasional "doggy ride". No transmission issues! Smooth driving and great stopping power. Now it is "Dad's Runabout" and only goes to (mostly) supermarkets, Walmart, the bank, and hardware stores. It remains as reliable as ever and unless someone hits me, it might just last forever!

It was a VERY bad decision on my part to buy this car. For the 11 months I've had the car, it has been one problem after the other; failed driver power window actuator, stinky rotten egg smell most of the time, HAZARDEOUS to drive on a windy day, squirmy emergency braking, erratic idle, lousy fuel consumption in the winter, numerous rattles and a body that dings too easily. My 2001 Corolla was way better, but it's too late to lament now.. I'm selling this car once I've driven it for 2 years to at least pay the interest on the car loan.

Been driving this Toyota for awhile now and it just keeps going. Unbelievable that it's gone this far. Minimal repairs. At 250 k replaced water pump and clutch. Starter at 300 k. Nothing special about this car but it gets awesome mpg and starts every time. Motor starting to chatter so Iam about to find a used motor just because it's only about 600 for one and it's easy to install. If you want something that just gets to work you can't go wrong.

You don't buy this car for the looks, or the thrills. You buy this car because you're tired of failures of other brands. You buy this car because you can afford a little more up-front cost, as long as you don't have automotive drama... I bought mine after having three kids, I needed something that could handle 2 car seats + big sister. I got it in 2002 (as an early 2003 model). It was February, so I didn't get a great deal, but I wanted a gotta-always-be-reliable-to-be-at-work car. IT NEVER FAILED TO START. It has higher ground clearance than the Sienna (amazingly); this is good when it is snowing... I only got hung up once in the 17 years I have owned the car (~12 inches of snow). I have above 150K miles on it now. I have had the alternator fixed (it was overcharging the battery, which caused it to fail). I have had the A/C charged twice. Can't change the timing BELT because it is a chain (that doesn't need replacing). Bambi tried to total the car, but we bought it back from the insurance company & rebuilt it; amazed that the fender was easily replaceable... Now debating to replace it (after getting T-boned by a DUI); wife wants it fixed (again :) ).

I agree with Pete Novack, It does look like the IS 300 from some angles. The car handles well. One thing I did notice is wobbling going down the interstate. I looked at the trees, but they werent swaying at all to the wind. I guess that's aerodynamics, but I'm not sure. Overall this car is fantastic, and I've got a lot of compliments on it saying "That doesnt even look like a corolla". It's true it doesnt, but it does have the reliability the Corollas have always had.

I was very careful in making this purchase and thank god edmunds was there to help. I owned a ford (fixed or repaired daily) 00' focus before this and it is a motorcycle compared to this car. The dealer was fair in the price and what can i say, when you shut the door, it's a quiet, comfortable ride with a zoom zoom that beat out the noisy mazda's i test drove. And on top of that it also beats the small honda civic by far for it's class. Buy it, the money is well worth it and the car will give you the peace of mind your looking for. Well built, nice body style with the ground effects and fog lights, and you get what you pay for.

I have only had my new car less than a week, but I love it! It rides great,it is very roomy inside, easy access to all the controls. I love the sun roof and the alloy wheels make it look spectacular. I was torn between the corolla and the civic until I drove the new corolla. The civic was too small inside,i felt cramped when I was behind the wheel. Not that you will be sitting there often, but the back seat is so roomy, even for a man with long legs. I also like all the little compartments for your CD's or whatever. you also get two AC adapters. I would highly recommend this car.

I bought the car new in 2002 and now have 98,000 miles on it. It required front brake pads due to squealing brakes at 25,000 miles and was done free. Have performed routine maintenance - battery 60,000 miles, tires 60,000 miles, brakes 85,000 miles. After the brakes at 85,000 there was a persistent squeal and the car needed 2 more trips back to the dealer. Was given a free loaner car for the 2 returns and it was handled very professionally. Other than that I routinely get 34-35 mpg with about 65% highway driving. The car is actually fun to drive and I am always the first "out of the blocks". Minimal road noise at cruising speed and very smooth highway manners.

I recently bought this car. I've already had to replace the timing chain and catalytic converter. This car does have great gas mileage, 30 miles per gallon. It has comfy seats and is higher off the ground than other sedans of this era. However the paint is peeling off and the engine is horrible. If you want a commuter car that gets good gas mileage and don't mind having repairs this is the car for you.

Did a lot of research for my first car and the new style Corolla won! I ended up being the winner in the end though. Only problems have been with some interior things... My friends can't drive it because they're too tall (seat doesn't back up enough); I broke off a compartment door on the center panel within the first month - dealer replaced with no problems though. I added cruise control after market - it's not the prettiest thing sticking out my steering wheel but it works!
Love my baby Lexus

Bought a 03 Corolla for my wife in January. Love that car so much, I bought one for me in March. Build quality is excellent, it's quiet, smooth, refined. The engine is peppy, I'm getting 28MPG in the city and it's not even broken in yet. Not enough can be said about it's exterior styling...I turn heads everywhere I go, people are shocked to learn it's a base model Toyota. The steering is precise, the brakes are excellent, and there is a ton of trunk space. I'm not that tall, but there's plenty of leg room, both front and back. The dash and controls are well laid out, very logical. Overall I am SUPER happy with these cars!
Not As Dependable As Is Widely Believed

Purchased my Corolla in March 2002. At this time (June 2011) there are 49800 miles on it. Here is every problem I've ever had with it over 9 years in chronological order: - steering wheel was slightly out of alignment, tilting to the left a bit; Toyota straightened it under warranty - AC cut out while I took a 600 mile road trip; only happened once, didn't need to fix it - squealing started off and on from the engine/belt; had belt replaced but squealing continued; sources online say it's a belt tensioner problem; happens inconsistently; haven't fixed it yet - crackling distortion began from rear speakers - rear wheel bearings needed replacing, $1260 for parts + labor

I had no trouble with this car and felt it was highly reliable, like the Toyota reputation suggested. I bought the car new and always took car of the maintenance. Then at 59,000 miles, the transmission completely failed. No warning, no symptoms, just stop at a light and when the light turned green, the car would not move. Turned it off and turned it back on, and when I put the car in drive, the car made a horrible grinding sound. Called Toyota and they would do nothing for me. 6/60000 miles was the warranty. Guess they had it figured out just right. I'll never buy a Toyota again.

I bought my car just a week ago. This car is perfect. Roamy interior, perfect design, smooth drive....I think, other cars, such as Honda Civic, Nissan Sentra, etc.,They wont sell any cars anymore, because the new COROLLA is gonna be hit the road.....
Better than the rest

Compared to sentra and civic,The Corolla wins hands down.Bigger more powerful engine,Roomier,Larger stance and tires.Timing chain opposed to civics belt is why I purchased it.A freind has a sentra he popped his hood We compared engines My corolla engine was simple to look at.His sentra was a mess of hoses and wires. We couldnt even find the oil filter!
Nice Car!!

I have 186,000 miles on my Corolla and the only thing that has gone wrong is the headlight bulbs burned out at about 100,000 miles. That was a $10 dollar fix I did myself. I give it regular maintenance and it runs like a champ. Great gas mileage and EXTREMELY reliable. Again, 186,000 trouble free miles!!! That is no joke.
