Don't buy a MURANO!!!

We purchased our 04 SL AWD fully loaded Murano new in the summer of 04. We just traded in the car at 164,545 miles this summer (2014) so I can provide a comprehensive history on this car. Within a couple of years the "leather" drivers seat was cracking badly on the sides. We had to replace the steering rack, two power steering lines and a sensor, an oil cooler seal, countless tires because the car never aligned properly and would make tires very loud. By the time the car was 6 years old the rattles and switch failures, car locks etc started to add up. We traded it in with lots of small problems and an oil leak. This is our first and last Nissan. Stay away!!

Nissan's safety standards saved lives.

My wife and I found out that she was pregnant, we were thrilled. The Murano surpassed all of our expectations, and Douglas Nissan of Henderson, NV gave us a great deal on a well kept 2004. we never had a problem and it felt and drove like a high end sports car. I loved the SUV, on December 5th, 2006 my mother and 8 month old daughter were hit by a lincoln doing 90+ mph, the thing is not only were the lives of two of the three most important women in my life saved, they were left nearly unscathed. My girl had a little glass in her car seat thanks to the rear passenger air curtains. My mother and daughter were taken to the hospital and discharged a few hours later. Best buy for their lives!!

The murano has been in the family since new. this SUV is made well, but it can's be abused. It has good cargo space. it is comfortable and strong. Cvt tranmission shifts well but it requires high maintenance(CVT fluid is over $20 per Quart, and the vehicle may have acceleration issues if the fluid is slightly low). It still runs on original engine and original transmission. It runs and drives well, however it started to burn oil( I have been using 20W/50 grade oil since 175k to reduce oil consumption). Engine is super quite when idles. All motor mounts, valve cover gaskets, oil pan gasket, power steering pressure line, and radiator went bad before hitting 180k. Doing the work myself, I saved a lot. I work on cars a lot, and I have to tell you that working on Muranos are very hard because of design. Replacement parts are usually more expensive compare hondas. As it was stated by other owners, sun visors are made cheap as well as leather on armrest. It tows well. Engine and muffler sound sporty when rpm goes high.

Mechanic says "safety hazard"

Nissan Muranos come with a high price tag. I invested in this vehicle expecting it to constructed with quality materials. I was informed yesterday by my mechanic that is cannot be driven out of the shop. His words were, "It is a definite safety hazard". The rear frame cross member has totally rusted, rotted and completely dropped. No wonder my back tires were leaning. In appearance, this car looks great. Never would have I thought I was driving something dangerous. The Murano only has 130,000 miles. I have seen online that a Murano with only 90,000 miles did the same exact thing. This seems to be common for the Muranos. Spending Between $35,000 to $40,000 you would expect a better quality build. Contacting Nissan, nothing they can do, out of warranty. Seems more like a defect (recall) issue than a warranty issue. Especially since lives could be affected. Another common defect in the Murano is the A/C condenser dripping into the subframe, pooling and rusting from the inside out. That also won't be visible until something "happens". Seen a 1980's truck yesterday. Still solid and running.

Should have a mechanic as an option

Bought my 2004 new. Have put on at least 3 to 4 brakes, and 3 sets of tires. Currently has 170,000 miles and is stuck at the dealership, was towed there. Right now needs motor mounts, catalylic convertor, front brakes, burns oil, a trans leak (so the dealer says, I do not have any leak spots on the ground), four tires, a belt: $6,000. in parts and labor! Really? I just replaced the CV joint on the drivers side. 350.00, an independent friend replaced it, probably double price at a service station. Nissan dealership is basically telling me to junk the car, so I will buy a new one. They tell me the engine may be bad, the transmission may need to be replaced. Dealership is scary.
