If you're looking for the ultimate SUV, there's really nothing better than the Mercedes-Benz GLS. It's the biggest, baddest crossover in Mercedes' lineup, and it's comfortable and luxurious enough to sit atop our ranking of the best large luxury SUVs; no other competitor comes close. There's even an ultra-luxe Maybach version — which we review separately — if you want to spare no expense. The current GLS debuted as a 2020 model and received a handful of minor updates in 2024. Circulating spy photos suggest a more significant upgrade is due for the GLS in 2026.

Edmunds spotlight: The most likely changes for 2026

Spy shots of a large camouflaged SUV believed to be the 2026 GLS point to new exterior light designs that mimic the distinctive three-pointed star motif that will debut on the next-generation CLA sedan. There's also a good chance that the bodywork surrounding the headlights and grille will get a little nip and tuck. On the inside, we expect a door-to-door Hyperscreen-like display found in other Mercedes vehicles to finally arrive in the GLS, and there are hints it will come with more physical buttons than in these other applications. Since this big SUV and its S-Class sedan equivalent typically debut new tech or safety features, we also expect new luxuries to set a new standard for this segment.

Competitors to consider

The closest rivals to the GLS include the BMW X7 and Land Rover Range Rover. The X7 adds a palpable dose of performance to the mix, while the Range Rover stands out for its atypical all-terrain capabilities. For a more American flavor, the larger Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator and Jeep Grand Wagoneer feature a bolder interpretation of luxury and are better at towing when needed.

With more distinctive styling on the way, plus an updated infotainment interface, the 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLS might be worth waiting for.
