What is the A5?
Originally spun off from the A4 sedan, the A5 is available as a coupe, a convertible or the increasingly popular four-door hatchback body style Audi calls the Sportback. Though the A5 is mechanically identical to the A4, the styling of the A5 variants gives the models a more sporty appearance without losing much in the way of practicality or comfort. Currently, the A5 is offered with two versions of a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and standard all-wheel drive.
Based on spy photos we've seen, we thought the A5 might be on the receiving end of a significant redesign for 2024. Alas, that's not the case for this model year. Instead, more features are newly standard across the 2024 lineup, including adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance, and parking sensors. The Navigation package, which is optional on the midlevel Premium Plus trim and standard on the top-tier Prestige trim, adds traffic sign recognition.
The personal luxury coupe and convertible segment is getting pretty small these days but there are still few options. BMW offers the 4 Series in coupe, convertible and a swoopy four-door coupe-style version, and Mercedes-Benz has its long-running C-Class available in both coupe and convertible styles. If you want a little more performance from the Audi A5, we expect there to be at least an S5 and possibly RS 5 versions to accompany the redesign. We'll review those separately.
