The 2023 Forte is a grown-up small sedan that's a fantastic value for the money with above-average utility. Other highlights include a comfortable, quiet interior and an extensive list of available features. However, it lags well behind top competitors in driving dynamics, ride quality and rear legroom.
2023 Kia Forte Review
Pros
- Loaded with features at lower price than most competitors
- High fuel economy
- Easy-to-use tech and infotainment system
- Generous warranty
Cons
- Ride quality is a bit too stiff at times
- Back seat lacks the room of some rivals
What's new
- Minor changes to optional and standard feature availability
- Last year's FE trim is renamed the LX trim
- Part of the third Forte generation introduced for 2019
Overview

Kia's 2023 Forte might not have the same level of name recognition as some other small sedans but it's one you'll definitely want to look into. It's typically priced a little less than its direct rivals and, depending on the trim level, comes with a few extra features. Combined with high fuel economy, strong performance from the GT trim, and a generous warranty, the Forte provides compelling value.

Helping matters is a significant refresh that took place last year, with updated styling and new features. The 2023 Forte is pretty much unchanged. Last year's FE trim is now called the LX and the GT trim gets a few new standard features, such as adaptive cruise control, that were previously optional. Overall, the Forte is a competitive pick alongside top rivals including the Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra and Mazda 3. Check out our full report on the Kia Forte by reading our test team's Expert Rating below.
Edmunds Expert Rating

Driven, tested, rated by automotive expert Will Kaufman
Good
7.9
out of 10
We drove the 2023 Kia Forte on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Performance
7/10
How does the Forte drive? In routine driving, the Forte feels adequately punchy. At Edmunds' test track, our test Forte covered 0-60 mph in 8.7 seconds, which is an average time for the class. The CVT automatic generally works well but at times feels unpolished. It delivers power promptly when commanded, but it's too eager to drop revs when you ease off the throttle slightly. It can make for surging power delivery.
We're also not overly impressed with the Forte's handling. The steering weight is fine but offers little feedback, and the on-center feel is vague. While the Forte corners relatively flat, it can get unsettled by midcorner bumps.

Comfort
8/10
How comfortable is the Forte? The Forte is more comfortable than most cars in the class. The seats are nicely contoured for long-distance comfort, and the headrests are soft and unobtrusive. Road noise is ably quelled, and only a mild amount of wind and ambient noise seeps through. The dual-zone automatic climate control works well. We also like that Kia offers ventilated front seats, although the cooling effect isn't especially powerful.
The biggest knock against the Forte here is its stiff suspension. It's OK on rough pavement or shallow imperfections, but it struggles to smooth out larger bumps. The rear suspension, in particular, is especially troubled by uneven bumps.

Interior
8/10
How’s the interior? Kia has done an excellent job designing the Forte's interior. A mix of textures makes the well-built interior look grown-up and refined. The controls are logical and easy to find, and the infotainment is easy to navigate, with physical buttons for important features. The seating position and steering wheel both offer a wide range of adjustability.
The front seat is roomy with plenty of knee and shoulder room. Taller drivers have sufficient headroom, too. Rear-seat knee room falls short compared to class leaders (and the hard plastic seatbacks don't help), but headroom is an issue only for passengers over 6 feet tall.

Technology
8/10
How’s the tech? Overall, the Forte offers a lot of well-integrated features. The touchscreen interface is easy to use, and the upgraded audio system sounds sharp as long as you don't turn it up too loud. The native voice system recognizes basic controls with little confusion, though you have to follow a structured set of commands.
Every Forte comes with forward collision mitigation, and a blind-spot warning system is available on midtier trims and above. It's a little disappointing that adaptive cruise control isn't standard on most of the Forte's trim levels. It's standard on many competitors. In testing, all systems worked well and avoided false alerts.

Storage
8.5/10
How’s the storage? For a small sedan, the Forte offers excellent utility. The trunk has a wide, flat load floor and a generous opening. At 15.3 cubic feet, it's also among the biggest in the class. The cabin offers several small-item storage options to help you organize your things. These include a decently sized center console box, miscellaneous storage trays and accommodating door pockets.
The anchor points for child safety seats are clearly marked, and the anchors sit close to the surface of the cushions, making them easy to access. The somewhat limited backseat room means bulky rear-facing seats might interfere with front seat movement.

Fuel Economy
8.5/10
How’s the fuel economy? Fuel economy is excellent, and the EPA estimates the Forte with the base engine will get 32 mpg combined (or 35 mpg for the FE trim). We fell a bit short in our real-world driving tests but saw better returns in the Forte than in most competitors.
Value
9/10
Is the Forte a good value? The Forte makes an undeniably strong value statement. It has a slightly different equipment balance than competitors, but you'll pay less for lots of features. The quality of the interior design also belies the below-average price. Cost-cutting is not all that apparent until you really start looking.
Kia and its corporate cousin, Hyundai, offer the best warranty in the business right now, with six years/60,000 miles of basic coverage and 10 years/100,000 miles for the powertrain. Roadside assistance, offered for five years/60,000 miles, is also good for the class, though Hyundai edges it out slightly with unlimited mileage over the same period.

Wildcard
7/10
The Forte is a small car that you can show off because it doesn't give the impression of being an economy bargain pick. The strength of this car is that it's an affordable vehicle that doesn't make you feel as if you've compromised. But it also doesn't exhibit the same fun-to-drive dynamics that make the Civic and Mazda 3 so rewarding to pilot.
2023 Kia Forte trim level differences
The 2023 Kia Forte is offered in four trim levels: LX, LXS, GT-Line and GT. The lineup ranges from the fuel-sipping LX to the sporty GT. The latter is equipped with a more powerful engine and an available six-speed manual transmission.
Which Forte trim does Edmunds recommend?
We're partial to the GT-Line trim. It adds a bunch of desirable features, such as a bigger touchscreen and dual-zone climate control, and is still reasonably priced.

2023 Kia Forte GT-Line 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl CVT)
I am in love with this car! I won’t lie I am a Ford guy, but since Ford stopped making the Focus and the Fusion, I had to look elsewhere for a car. This forte GT line hits the sweet spot for me! MRSP was 26k (I paid 24k) and you get features like heated and cooled leather power seats. Premium sound system. Navigation based adaptive cruise control (provides semi-automated driving on … highways). Loads of other safety features. The 2.0L is just fine for daily driving, I do a lot of city driving so I’m not getting as good of mpg as other reviews, but I’m still averaging 36mpg. Considering I drive 80% in the city, I’d say that’s a good mpg number. Kia has came a long way in the last decade. If you would have told me 10 years ago that I would be driving a Kia one day, I would have laughed. But you can tell they have made a real change and are leading towards a more premium level. You can feel the Genesis influences in Kia, even in their Hyundai products. My friend owns a Genesis G80, and her car doesn’t even have cooled seats. It’s amazing that my 24k car has features that even a 60k car doesn’t. If you want a fully loaded car for under 30k that you will be extremely happy with, this is the one. It rides fantastic, hits the sweet spot between comfort and sports. It has a sport feel to the suspension, but it’s soft enough to not be overly rough over bumps. Little low on HP, but you could always upgrade to the GT with the turbo if you think you need more power. This car has everything and more for a great price. Don’t be stuck in the old impressions of Kia from 10 years ago. They are worth the look.
Smooth drive

2023 Kia Forte LXS 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl CVT)
I've had my Forte LXS for just over 2 months now. What a great car! It drives quiet and smooth. I really haven't driven it any long distances yet so around town my MPG is about 29. When we visit our kids out of state, we'll get some highway numbers. I'm familiar now (about time) on how to use all the safety features and how to use scroll through the cluster on the dashboard to customize … my preferences. At 68 years old I was a bit concerned the technology would overwhelm me but I caught on after a while. The 147 HP is more then enough for my wife and I. We're in our 60's, both retired and in no hurry to get anywhere. But that doesn't stop me from occasionally going out for a drive and enjoying the sport mode a bit. The 4 star rating would be 5 had the car come with a spare tire and not just a tire inflator. Also it would have been nice to have an air vent and USB port in the back seat area for when we have our grandkids with us. Good looking car in the royal blue or as I call it GIANTS blue color. I'm happy with my Forte and hope it lasts me for at least 10 years or so. Again, great car!

2023 Kia Forte GT 4dr Sedan (1.6L 4cyl Turbo 7AM)
UPDATED 03/2025: 31,000 miles later, no issues. Still in love with my GT2! I get asked often if my exhaust is stock, people are surprised when I say yes. My score remains 5 stars! ORIGINAL REVIEW 03/2024: Traded in my red 2018 S w/ tech package for a red ‘23 GT2 DCT. What a car! From the bells and whistles to that exhaust note (even when not in Sport), this is an awesome little machine. … It moves when commanded and sounds so good doing it. I averaged 38.3 on the 3 and a half hour drive home while driving a mix of casual and spirited in Smart mode since it seemed to give me Eco when casual and Sport when spirited. My ‘18 had all the safety features it’s trim could have at that time; this one has those and then some. The Harmon/Kardon system is great as well. Edmunds says the cooling effect of the ventilated seat isn’t especially powerful but I personally find it great. I’m hoping for many years with this one! Give it a drive and make your own opinion if you’re considering. It’s a great get for the price. I love walking up to it from any angle everyday!
