Overview
The Ford Explorer is a midsize three-row SUV that's been in the Ford lineup for over 30 years. In its current form, the Explorer features turbocharged four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines and is based on a rear-wheel-drive platform rather than the front-wheel-drive underpinnings that most rivals enjoy. While its passenger and cargo room aren't class-leading, the RWD platform does provide some benefits; the Explorer is one of the better-handling and fun-to-drive vehicles in its class. However, we don't know how much of this will change for 2027, as we expect a new Explorer to debut sometime in the near future.
Edmunds spotlight: It's time for a new Explorer
The current Explorer went on sale as a 2020 model, so 2027 will be the eighth model of this generation. That's a long time in car years. While we generally like the Explorer's design, driving dynamics, and robust set of advanced driving aids, it could learn a thing or two from newer competitors. A few years ago, reports surfaced that the Explorer would be fully redesigned for 2027. But Ford's recent financial issues related to investments in its electric vehicles may have pushed those plans back a bit. Whichever year Ford settles on for the launch of the next-generation Explorer, it's clear that the Blue Oval isn't rushing its production. Ford sold 222,706 Explorers in 2025, making it the most popular SUV in its lineup and emphasizing the importance of a successful redesign.
Competitors to consider
Our favorite three-row mainstream SUVs are the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade, which we love for their practical interior, ample tech and reasonable pricing. But the segment is overflowing with excellent SUVs. Mazda's CX-90 offers standard all-wheel drive and multiple power levels from its inline six-cylinder engine, plus a four-cylinder plug-in hybrid powertrain. It also ups the ante with a premium design and more materials than the Explorer offers. There's also the Toyota Grand Highlander, which offers a multitude of trim levels and two hybrid options.
