Overview

The 2022 Buick Encore is an extra-small SUV that slots alongside the Encore GX (a wholly different vehicle reviewed separately) as an entry-level model in Buick's lineup. Buick has been paring down the Encore over the past few years, cutting the number of trims and features available. For 2022, the Encore is now only available in a single trim level, and some features have been removed or added to equipment packages. It's not all about slimming it down. The Encore's engine gets a significant bump in power for 2022, helping alleviate the Buick's sluggish acceleration.

The Encore competes in an extremely crowded class, with many automakers (including Buick) offering multiple vehicles around this size and price point. Some of our favorites include the Mazda CX-30, the Hyundai Kona, the Subaru Crosstrek and the Encore GX, all of which we think are better alternatives to the Encore. Despite the bump in power for 2022, the Encore still feels dated and several steps behind the class leaders.
2022 Buick Encore trim level differences
All 2022 Buick Encores are powered by a new 1.4-liter turbocharged inline-three with 155 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. That's up 17 horsepower and 29 lb-ft of torque over last year's Encore. A six-speed automatic and front-wheel drive are standard, though the Encore is available with all-wheel drive.
Which Encore trim does Edmunds recommend?
For 2022, the Encore is only available in a single trim level: Preferred. We suggest adding both the Safety Package and Safety Package II for features including blind-spot monitoring and forward collision alert. Even with both packages you won't get smart cruise control — it's still not available on the 2022 Buick Encore.

2020 Buick Encore Preferred 4dr SUV (1.4L 4cyl Turbo 6A)
This SUV is perfect for a family of four! Not much storage space, but the seats lay flat to allow for bigger items. Engine runs smooth for a 4 cylinder and definitely a gas saver! The cost is great if you are on a budget!

2020 Buick Encore Preferred 4dr SUV (1.4L 4cyl Turbo 6A)
It is upscale experience with a small footprint. Really quiet compared to the Subaru I had. About the same mileage. Seems a little low for its size but the car is well made and feels way more luxury oriented. Great stereo. Easy electronics to understand.

2020 Buick Encore Preferred 4dr SUV AWD (1.4L 4cyl Turbo 6A)
I bought my Encore Preferred AWD three months ago and I am really impressed. It drives extremely well and is so quiet. I have no complaints. It is beautiful to look at and the LED headlights set off the classy black exterior. I am looking forward to some snow in Western New York to test out the AWD. I am so happy with my purchase.
Never again!

2020 Buick Encore Preferred 4dr SUV (1.4L 4cyl Turbo 6A)
It started out great the first week, then started the items to be fixed. The heater had issues. Then the big one was the turbo. Not one time but 3 times. When it goes out you have no power. To sum it up, this vehicle was in the shop 8 times in less than 2 years. That is an average of every 3 months.
