Loved my GTI 1.8T, Realy LOVE the GLI
I looked at the Acura TSX the Mercedes-Benz C230 Sport, but I just fell more in love with the features and comfort and feel of the Jetta GLI. I got an '06 GLI w/package 2, sirius, the navigation system, rear airbag and spoiler. Previously, I had an '02 GTI and loved it so much I didn't want to sell it but I needed more room. I get more for less money with the Jetta than with the C-Class or the TSX. They had similar features, but felt not quite as put together as the GLI. On top of that in most of the reviews I have read the GLI was put on top. I must say I agree with that end result! I love this car, driving and the feel of the car on the road are great. I would say they could lessen the wind noise, but I normaly have the radio up too loud to hear it anyway :-)
GLI = FUN
I picked up my GLI last week after seriously considering the Accord Coupe V6 6MT and the Altima SER 6-speed. The GLI blows both cars away when it comes to the "fun to drive" factor. Yes, it has its typical VW "quirks", a minor rattle in the dash that will get fixed at its 5,000 mile service, and the stereo system is not terrific, but you don't buy a GLI to listen to music. Punch the acclerator in 3rd gear, listen to the amazing 2.0T spool up and say goodbye to almost anyone in your way. Watch out for the flashing lights though...
My GLI is a Super Sports Sedan!
This car is absolutely a BLAST to drive! I just picked it up last week and I am actually getting up early and taking a longer route to work in the morning! I'm still breaking it in so I haven't really opened it up yet, but the 2.0 FSI engine is flat out the best four-banger that Volkswagen has ever produced. There is absolutely NO turbo lag and it pulls strongly from below 2,000 RPM, even in the higher gears. The gearbox has nicely-spaced ratios and shifts easily. The suspension is firm but not overly stiff, and the steering is perfectly weighted, with excellent path accuracy and crisp, precise turn-in. This car is an incredible value for an entry-level sports sedan!
Great, but not always great
Let me start by saying this is my favorite new car yet! At the same time, it's also the worst. How, you might ask? Well, it's had two major mechanical failures in less than 8,500 miles. First to go at 2,100ish miles was the dual mass flywheel. They replaced it under warranty. Next to fail was the chain on the oil pump, which has never happened according to VWoA. This time they replace the entire engine, again under warranty. In short, it has great performance and economy, but I really must question the reliability, both long and short term. The service from the dealership is absolutely top notch, however. I actually feel kind of bad for them having to post this information.
Fun, Fast, Watch out for the police!
This new Jetta GLI is fun. I always find myself traveling at 80 mph though, so be careful if you already have tickets. It has a smooth ride, with just enough power to keep me interested. I will not be winning any drag races, but with only 200hp I did not expect too, it does have some surprising get up and go though for sure. I have the manual transmission. I get comments on how the car looks all the time, I tinted the windows and picked the metallic black exterior with black leather interior and with the red highlights on the grill and brakes. It looks really nice...if I do say so myself. Overall there is very little to complain about...it does pull just a little when you are going all out but it is manageable.
