The long and the short of it

2023 Hyundai Elantra
I, for one, had one of the first original N Line models made for the US, a 2020 Elantra GT N Line which is an upgraded Elantra Sport. That car was nearly perfect. It had the Technology package that included the panoramic sunroof and ventilated seats.
Over the course of the past two years, I followed the Elantra N and it’s N Line counterparts, a slightly used (under 500 miles) 2022 … Veloster N as well as the updated Honda Civic Si. I also considered the Mazda 3 Turbo and the new Subaru WRX. After test driving all of them, this was my conclusion on each:
Elantra N: Excellent car. A bit too boy racer for my taste. The brace in the trunk while useful hinders it’s practicality. No deals were to be had on this car and my insurance on that car would be insane.
Mazda 3: Simply beautiful but lacked that “it” factor. Great interior furnishings but the blind spot on the hatchback was a bit much. The sedan is nice however it doesn’t tickle the same as the hatchback. Both were less spacious.
Subaru WRX: Not the prettiest car but what Subaru ever was (exception being the BRZ). It performed well, my insurance was reasonable and there were plenty available. Reasons why I didn’t bite? Gas mileage was abysmal, little safety tech unless you got the SPT/CVT and the cargo space.
Honda Civic Si: A better car than the last one. Nicer interior too. However, dealer markups were crazy (still are). Piped in exhaust sounds? Slower than the last generation? Hondas are well built and have a great aftermarket yet it wasn’t enough for me to buy that car much less pay $3K-$5K markup to get one.
Veloster N: Similar to the comments about the Elantra N. The insurance was cheaper, though. However the dealer was asking $36K. It was considered a used car and the interest rates on it were considerably higher that those of a new car.
The Elantra N Line struck the right balance of performance, looks, tech, practicality, price and VALUE for my money. Out the door I paid just under MSRP before taxes. Because I bought it on the last day of the month, I was able to negotiate as well. All the dealer add-ons were taken off the price of the vehicle (about $1600). Besides, nitrogen is in the air of ALL tires.
I’m pleased with my purchase. I do miss not having cooled seats for summers and not having that big panoramic roof but I also don’t miss not having blind spot monitoring, which this car has. Looking at that large fully digital dash and upgraded infotainment screen only increases my love for this purchase.
I think I’ve said enough.
