Owned a lot of 4Runners, this one's the worst

Owned 4Runners since 1987 and have been happy with all of them with the exception of this 2018 SR5 4WD. The transmission “shudders” between about 35 mph and 54 mph. The dealer identified the cause as the torque converter going in and out of lock as the vehicle is attempting to maximize fuel economy by trying to find the optimal gear. Does it on hills or flat roads. Annoying is an understatement. The dealer is told by Toyota that this is normal. I'm not in agreement. The ride in this 4Runner is very harsh, amplified on rough roads. Mileage is about the same as all previous 4Runners I've owned at about 19.6 mpg. and power is adequate. Ground clearance and 4WD have kept me in the 4Runner camp for years, but the transmission issue may have me moving out soon.

Went from a bicycle to a 4runner. Haven't looked back since. Probably the greatest purchase I've ever made.

Owner of three Four Runners

The reasons for the ratings I gave below 5 star in Technology and Electronics is as follows. This is the third Four Runner I have owned (2003, 2013, 2018). Obviously I am a loyal owner and love the vehicle. My biggest complaint, and its a minor one but annoying, is that none of the 4 Runners I have owned have a warning buzzer that the headlights were left on when car is turned off. Seatbelts, doors ajar etc all have an audible warning, and I realize these are probably mandatory for safety reasons, but every other car I have owned as a convenience not as dictated by law, warns the driver of lights left on (including an old 1995 Toyota pick up I own) which is helpful during daylight when its not as obvious and one might forget. Another negative issue I have with this vehicle buzzers is that the tailgate ajar warning buzzer on the 2013 & the 2018 could not be disabled. The few times I have had to place oversized articles that protruded causing me to leave tailgate open a few inches and secure the tailgate proved very annoying to not be able to disable the sound. I was told, again, safety regulations. My old 4 runner did not have that problem. These vehicles are Sports UTILITY Vehicles and transporting large items, at the owners risk, should be allowed. Pick ups can drive with tailgates down. With all the warning buzzers these vehicles have, there should be one for the lights being accidently left on.

Reliable, tough, roomy, quiet

It’s funny how the car magazines have taken to bashing the 4Runner these days...even as they sell like hot cakes. I’ll address some of the criticisms. 1. Gas mileage. If you’re going to complain about it, buy a smaller vehicle. No truck of this size has much better mileage. It’s just physics. Look at it this way: your depreciation and repair costs will be less, especially when compared with anything American. If you want better gas mileage, you could get a Hybrid Highlander...for almost $20k more. It also depends HOW you drive—if you have a lead foot and do 75 on the highway, you get worse mileage. I’m gentle on it and have gotten 25 mpg on the highway. 1. Old technology: yes, the engine and transmission aren’t new. That is why they are so reliable. I specifically did NOT want a tiny engine with a turbo or a 10-speed transmission. I tried a Santa Fe, and the constant shifting drove me nuts. I’d rather have simpler and bomb-proof. I did NOT want a huge touch screen to control everything. As a traveling piano technician, reliability is my biggest concern, not gadgetry. Truck frame: people complain endlessly about the truck-type construction. Guess what? It’s a truck! I happen to love the tight steering, and the ride is very comfortable and quiet. It’s a great family road trip car. It’s not a sports car, especially because it high and narrow, and rides on balloon tires. Interior: lots of haters describe the “plasticky interior.” I guess everything has to be microsuede with hand stitching these days? Guess what? All those fancier materials are harder to clean. But here’s the important thing about interiors: how long do they remain tight and quiet? I’d rather have a Spartan interior that stayed quiet and didn’t develop squeaks and rattles over time. Weak engine: is it the most powerful engine out there? No, but I don’t find it to be weak either. If you want a V8 or a turbo, fine, but then your gas mileage will be really terrible and that turbo will eventually blow up. The V6 is pretty much the sweet spot. In conclusion, here’s my take on the 4Runner and the competition: For what it is, there’s little competition. Sure, you can get a Jeep or Range Rover, but you can’t even compare reliability ratings. There are lots of great pickups...if you want a pickup. I wanted a fully-enclosed vehicle. If you actually do go off-road or explore primitive roads, most of the so-called SUVs out there are not designed for that, even if they’re a little jacked up with some plastic body cladding. The 4Runner is designed for that. My last car was an Outback, and the suspension was terrible on anything but smooth road. And it left me stranded when the head blew... Is there anything I don’t like about it? Here’s one tiny detail about the base SR5: no one should make a car at this point point that will let you leave the headlights on and walk away! What is this, GM in the 1970’s? Oy.

I love this vehicle I looked for 3 months before making the purchase. I read all reviews, resale value and performance and knew this was the vehicle for me. I wish I would have spent the extra to get the limited edition just for more comfort while driving.
