I like a car that I control, not a 9 speed auto transmission and a computer. That being said, in 2018 what our my choices ? A Mustang, Challenger or a Corvette. I am much too old for any of these and I wanted a car I did not have to crawl in and out of. Another selling point is that the Compass sport with a manual transmission does not have that ESS engine stop and start . Call me old fashioned, but I do not like it when the engine stops and starts at every stop sign. I think this may be a problem for all the cars with ESS down the road when they have over 100k on them. On the highway 4 gear does the job 55-70 mph with the 5 and 6 gears act as override gears. I also like the color, a spitfire orange with a black Mopar stripping option. Its refreshing in the land where the color is black, white, and 50 shades of gray. The ride overall is comfortable for a Jeep and being tall, my head does not touch the roof. I understand that less than 5% of the Compass have a manual transmission, so good luck if you are interested in owning one. As of 05/2019 still own the vehicle with no problems so far. UPDATE 11/16/19, still own and no problems with 10,000 miles on it. Still love it no problems but having a problem of upgrading the wheels from 16' to 17'. Very limited choice for this type of vehicle. Not a car but not a Jeep rock crawler , still looking as of this date. All in all I still like the manual trans. and I think makes this little SUV. As of 11/26/2022 no problems, just a reprogram recall on all the 2.4 liter from 2013-2019. also replaced the tires with Michelin crossclimate 2 . All in all no problems .

I've enjoyed the car since I bought it in July, with the caveat that my enjoyment has a lot to do with the price I paid. Comparable vehicles were generally about 5-8K more than this little SUV. It's a handsome car (I got it in metallic British Racing Green) and the honeycomb seats are pretty. Tech is solid, handling is great (I took it off road very easily, and it does well in snow.) Here's what I don't like: It is sluggish on acceleration....it should have a V6 and not a V4. Shifting in the automatic is a bit slow. Also, and this is my biggest peeve, there is a totally unnecessary automatic switch-off that happens when you come to a stop for more than a few seconds. Engine kicks on again as soon as you take your foot off the brake. I find this so annoying. In winter, the heat turns off and the car goes quiet while you wait for things to reboot at every traffic light. You can turn it off, but then everytime you restart the car you have to remember to do so. I think this was a feature designed so that the manufacturer could boost the mileage per gallon to help THEM, not you, the consumer. Overall, though, a very reliable and fun car for a good price.

I bought this car new and 6 days after I bought it there was fluid and smoke coming from under the engine and exhaust. The dealer said it was the fill and drain plugs in the PTU. So 2 weeks and 2 days later they called and said it was fixed. I picked it up and drove it maybe 10 miles and at a stop light smoke started rolling out from under it again. Way worse than the first time, and oil was pouring out of the PTU seal. They took the car for another 8 days and they finally got it fixed. So I have a car with 500 miles on it and owned it for a little over a month, and only had possession for 9 days

Car Turned off on Exit Ramp

2018 Jeep Compass with 6,000 miles. One month after purchasing battery died. This past weekend the car completely turned off as I was headed down an exit ramp coming off of an interstate with my 95 year old Aunt in vehicle. We are lucky we weren't killed. Dealership seems to think nothing is wrong.

I would make sure you look into these transmission issues as I have heard from others the same issues.
