We bought our 2000 Hyundai Sonata brand new and still have it. It has 174,000 miles on it now. It's a great car!

I bought this car from my brother less than a year age, it doesn't even have 80,000 miles on it yet and the sub-frame has rotted out and has become undrivable. I don't understand how a car company can get away with using material that can get rotted out so quickly and pose a hazard to the people's safety like that. I have had older cars that did not have these problems. On top of that I am having transmissions problems with it as well and my power window motor is fried. If I knew then what I know now I would have not bought the piece of junk. Hyundai should be ashamed and I am glad that I did not get in an accident with my children in the car due to this problem.

It's amazing that I love this car as much as I do. I have always been a foriegn car owner because the car needs to be able to handle 200K miles in 5-6 yrs. with no major problems. So far my Sonata is living up to it. The engine isn't "peppy"...its powerful! The body and general feel of the car is solid and the handling is smooth and precise. Sincerely thinking about trading in my Mazda 626 to get another Sonata!

2000 Hyundai Sonota sub frame rot

I bought this car with 11000 miles on it. Overall it has been pretty reliable until about 75000 miles I have had to replace all the wheel bearings. Now at 86000 miles the sub-frame is rotted from the inside out. This is the first time I have ever seen a sub frame rot on a vehicle less than 14 years old. It is a shame that Hyundai will build a car that the sub frame rots from the inside out. This is very dangerous and costly to repair.

A realistic evaluation

We purchased this car when gas was expensive. It is very similar in size and displacements to our '99 Camry. This car is not a Camry, but is still a good solid car. A lot of the reviews of people really don't seem to understand that owning a car involves some preventative up-keep. I've had to have timing belts and brakes on both. Toyota Camry is the GOLD standard. But that isn't to say the Sonota isn't a good, solid vehicle. (It's probably not fair to compare the two. I've heard the new Sonata's are closer in feel to a Camry.) I would have no reservations buying one. The car is very similar in ergonomics, design, and power to my old '96 Accord. Thanks for reading.
