Hyundai and performance are not mutually exclusive concepts, as proven by the 2026 Hyundai Elantra N. The N is the high-performance version of what is otherwise a pretty sensible small sedan. You can use it as a daily driver for shuttling kids, commuting to the office, and running errands. Then, on the weekends, you can head out to your favorite twisty road and enjoy the car's remarkably capable handling and snorty exhaust note. The Elantra N is a great way to have automotive fun without spending a heap of money.

How does the Hyundai Elantra N drive? The Elantra N is one of today's best-handling front-wheel-drive cars. Steering is accurate and communicative, making the car feel nimble and sharp. It absorbs midcorner bumps with ease and delivers loads of grip through corners. The turbocharged 2.0-liter is strong, with plenty of low and midrange power and with short enough gearing to always feels zippy, even when you're passing at highway speeds. In our testing, a manual-transmission Elantra N covered 0 to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds, while a model with the automatic transmission did the same sprint in 5.5 seconds. The six-speed isn't the snappiest we've tested, but it's accurate enough that we never missed a gear.

The Elantra N's sportier suspension makes for a slightly stiffer ride than the regular Elantra, but on the highway, it settles into a pleasant cruiser. Despite the swoopy design, outward visibility is pretty good. Hyundai includes a decent array of driver aids, and what's here works well. We didn't notice any false warnings or overly eager braking systems. Oddly, Hyundai doesn't offer adaptive cruise control for the N, even on models with an automatic transmission.

How comfortable is the Hyundai Elantra N? The front sport seats are comfortable and supportive, with ample bolstering that doesn't feel restrictive. Even with the aggressive seat design, it's easy to get in and out. The doors open wide, and the seats in both rows sit at a comfortable height, although the roofline forces you to duck a bit to get in back. Aside from the seats, the Elantra N's interior isn't too different from the standard Elantra's.

There's ample room for passengers in both rows, and only taller passengers will find rear headroom tight. The driver's seat and steering wheel are widely adjustable, the clutch and shifter are within easy reach, and pedal spacing makes heel-toe downshifts simple. Climate controls are easy to use (bonus points for physical buttons) and quickly reach the desired temperature. Less appealing is the amount of wind and road noise that enters the cabin. It's not headache-inducing, but rivals like the Volkswagen Golf GTI are more refined.

There are two easily accessible child-seat safety anchors on each rear outboard seat, and the spacious back seat allows you to load rear-facing seats without changing your driving position.

In-cabin tech

How’s the tech? The Elantra N comes standard with lots of in-car tech and a crisp 10.25-inch display. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard but use a wired connection. The built-in navigation system works well enough and is simple to use, with surprisingly robust voice commands. They are easy to use to input addresses or adjust the climate control while driving. A wireless charging pad is standard and there are enough USB ports for your devices. The Bose audio system is also standard.

How’s storage and cargo? The Elantra N offers 14.2 cubic feet of trunk space, average for a small sedan but less than performance hatchbacks like the Honda Civic Type R or VW Golf R offer. A fixed chassis brace, required to stiffen the Elantra N's body, is installed right behind the rear seat. It partially blocks the pass-through and limits the N's utility. Bright-red latticework aside, the trunk is wide and deep, with plenty of usable space. Inside the cabin, the small center console and door pockets don't offer much storage space.

Is the Hyundai Elantra N a good value? The Elantra N sits in an odd place in the market. It doesn't quite match the performance potential of the Honda Civic Type R and VW Golf R, but it's also a lot less expensive. In general, you get excellent value considering the car's price and performance. Build quality is solid, but there is a lot of hard black plastic inside. There are no rattles or misaligned panels, but it doesn't feel quite as nice as some rivals.

No one can touch Hyundai when it comes to warranty or ownership. The Elantra comes with a five-year/60,000-mile basic warranty and a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, far outshining its rivals.

How’s the fuel economy? The Hyundai Elantra N gets an EPA-estimated 24 mpg combined with the manual transmission or 23 mpg combined with the automatic. Those are a bit below average for the segment. But our test car posted an impressive 33.1 mpg on our mixed-driving evaluation route, plus reasonably good fuel economy during the rest of our test. This should be a pretty frugal car as long as you can avoid the temptation to be constantly hard on the gas.

X factor

If the Elantra N had a liftgate instead of a trunk lid, we'd be calling this one of the greatest hot hatches of all time. It's charming and fun in the same way as the other sport compacts. The design is sharp and distinct without being overwrought, and it's powerful enough to really blast around without being unsafe or dangerous. The chassis is sporty and nimble, yet it doesn't punish you day-to-day. The exhaust makes all the right pops and crackles on shifts, but it's never overbearing or blatty.

In addition to its impressive performance, the N remains a Hyundai Elantra. That means you still get a decent back seat and a roomy trunk, making this a very practical sport sedan with few compromises.

Everything was great except something about the car is absolutely killing my left leg. When I shift gears my leg digs into the seat. Pain is pretty bad, lasts for hours after driving, and makes my foot go numb. I’ve got another stick shift car (brz). that I still own and am driving with no pain issues at all.
