Feels more expensive than it was

2018 Hyundai Elantra GT 4dr Hatchback (2.0L 4cyl 6A)

My wife wanted to replace her Kia Soul with something sportier but still practical. We considered the Civic Hatchback and Mazda 3, but we found a 2018 Elantra GT base (2.0 w/ 6A) with the heated seats/tech package for the end-of-year bargain price of $17.5k after rebates. This was $5-6k less than any similarly equipped Civic or Mazda 3. I also drove an Elantra GT Sport (1.6T w/ 7DCT); it was quicker, but not remarkably so. Shortly after purchasing we road tripped from Oregon to Nevada for Thanksgiving, with many twisty mountain backroads through the Cascades and Sierras. Handling was excellent, and power was just fine for mountain driving and passing. Most professional reviewers prefer the 1.6T in the N-line, but the 2.0L's 160HP is satisfying for an economy car. The cabin feels expensive, and the heated seats+dual zone climate control are well worth the extra cost on a snowy winter day. Ergos are outstanding for taller drivers (I'm 6'3"), although back seat space is cramped. We're seeing highway fuel economy a little above EPA ratings: 34-36mpg. Styling inside and out is handsome. I can't believe we got such a nice car for this price. Maintenance: I still do my own. Maintenance access is pretty good like on most modern Hyundais and Kias, and the first two oil changes were easy. The under-engine cover has a nice cutout for oil filter access. We've had zero reliability issues, a year and four months later the car still looks and runs like new.

I was deciding between this and a Honda hatch,i'm glad i got this. The best freaking car for the value, you wouldn't get a lot of the standard features say in a Civic or a Corolla than this Elantra GT. The pro's are the large screen for your radio dash which is perfect for backup, the easy shifting for the 6-speed, the car hugs the road like a suction cup, you don't feel the turn as much when turning, Bluetooth of course with your steering wheel mount, you get a sweet looking rims instead of hub caps. Everything is pretty nice for the value. So now here is the con's-I'm having an issue a very noticeable vibration with an intermittent lose of rpm for example when I'm seating at a red light, the car wants quit even while the gear is in neutral. Took it back to the dealer where i purchased it to get it looked at back in August of 2018, their technician only replicated once and couldn't get it to replicate again. The vibration still exist and maybe tried to quit on me once since then. On the issue with the front windshield wiper where people can't flip it up to wash the car is not a defect, it's a hidden feature, the manual booklet tells you on how to get into "maintenance mode" where you can flip it up like you normally see. The front bumper is made out cheap plastic, since mine is white, lots of chipped/scratches on it already. Your radio preset once program you can't delete it, the only thing you can do is reset you radio dashboard. My commute is pretty long so i average between 33 to 36 mpg and that's at 75% highway and 25% city but if more on city and less highway it'll get about 29-30. Besides the issue I'm having, you do get a lot car for your money and I still love it. This car is really not a GT unless you bump up to the Sport trim level. I just call this an Elantra Hatchback.

Sporty, Fun, Functional

I have the 1.6T Sport and the car is a great balance of fun and comfort. The acceleration is strong and in the sport-driving mode with the shifters, you're not going to be disappointed. The ride is tight but not overbearing - smiles around every curve. Everyone who gets in the car is really impressed with the interior design. The gas mileage is a bit under what is marketed but that's more of my heavy foot because the car is so fun to drive. On the highway with cruise control, it beats expectations. I was considering the GTI but the functionality, electronics, overall look, known reliability provided a better overall value of the Hyundai versus the incumbent.

I’ve owned my 2018 Elantra GT Sport (manual) since January 2019. I got a good deal on mine (just under $20k) because it was a previous model year and they were just about to announce the new “N-Line” version. Long story short, it’s given me 17,000 totally trouble free miles. It’s a fun little car. It handles great and has decent power (not crazy fast — especially acceleration when you’re already at highway speeds, but it’s plenty zippy around town). I had a pretty long commute when I got this car, and it’s not great for that. It has some road noise and it’s a fairly firm ride. However, with a shorter commute, I’m finding I like it more. The interior is nice and simplistic, which was a major selling point for me. I wish it had a few more features like power seats and lumbar adjustment, and the radio doesn’t sound great, but it’s got heated leather seats and Apple CarPlay — which is enough for me. The car feels pretty solid overall, but there are some cheap plastic bits inside and out. But again, for the price, it’s hard to beat. My only other complaint is that the clutch has already lost all its feel. I’m not sure if that’s just how it feels after being broken in or if it’s wearing quickly. I can’t knock the car too much for that, since this could be normal and the clutch isn’t slipping yet. I have owned another older Elantra with a manual and it was pretty numb, but this car had good clutch feel for the first few thousand miles and I feel I’m pretty easy on the clutch. I won’t knock it too much for that yet... Overall I’m pretty happy. The car is stock for now, but I might try to get a little more power and exhaust sound from it.

Lemon

I recently bought a 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT Sport in late September 2018 and the car only had 170 miles on it when I got it. When I reached 800 miles on the car I had transmission problems that was covered under warranty. Now I have 4300 miles on my car and it is in the shop again needing a new engine. The dealership told me they found that the engine was losing compression and a bad head gasket and all the connections on the radiator blew off and that there was small amounts of water in the intake along with calcium build up. And they are now saying they have denied the warranty claim due to water in the intake which they are blaming on me.. This company sales alot of lemons and then tries to get over on people so they don't have to admit they sold a lemon.. I have now gotten me a lawyer to resolve this situation and I would advise anyone that is thinking about getting a hyundai or a Kia to change there mind and look at other vehicles.
