As BMW's largest SUV, the three-row X7 doesn't change for 2025. But the X7 occupies a corner of the three-row luxury ute market reserved for slightly smaller entries that focus on tech and refinement over outright size and opulence. This six- or seven-passenger ute is still a relative newcomer to the big SUV field. Arriving first in 2019, it had one significant update in 2023. Two excellent engines provide either strong (375 horsepower) or shocking (523 horsepower) motivation through an eight-speed transmission and standard all-wheel drive.

Driving experience

How does the BMW X7 drive? In our testing, the X7 xDrive40i accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds, hugely impressive for a luxury three-row SUV with a six-cylinder engine. By comparison, the V8-powered Cadillac Escalade is 1.5 seconds slower. With plenty of power on tap, the X7 surges forward effortlessly from any speed.

The X7 is also reasonably athletic for such a big car, and electronic wizardry abounds to maintain a comfortable ride. The optional Dynamic Handling package includes a camera that scans the road for imperfections and adjusts suspension damping in milliseconds for the smoothest ride possible. It almost works too well, as we found the ride too floaty and disconnected at times, especially in Comfort mode setting. Switching to Sport mode settles the ride nicely without compromising overall comfort.

Outward visibility is better than in many large SUVs, enhanced by large sail windows and big mirrors. Several standard safety aids also help with confident maneuvering, although some common features like adaptive cruise control and a surround-view camera system remain optional. The safety features work well, but we found it tricky to set an ideal cruise control following distance.

Comfort

How comfortable is the BMW X7? From its excellent seats to its vault-like interior silence, the X7 is exceptionally comfortable. Large doors make it easy to enter and exit, and there's abundant space in the first and second rows. The third row is a little tighter, but some negotiation with second-row passengers can make everything work. Taller passengers may notice slightly less headroom due to the sloping roofline. Outside noise is absent except for the six-cylinder's pleasant growl under heavy acceleration. BMW also makes some of the best high-end seats in the business, and the adjustable upper backrest makes it a cinch to find a perfect driving position. Loading car seats is also a breeze thanks to the ample space and easily accessible LATCH anchors and tethers.

The only real downside is the climate system, with its small air vents and weak automatic setting. Dialing in good heating and cooling requires more fine-tuning through clumsy touchscreen-based controls buried under menu layers. Physical buttons would go a long way here.

In-cabin tech

How’s the tech? The X7's robust tech offerings include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, USB-C ports in every row (plus one older USB-A up front), and a seriously expensive Bowers & Wilkins system that will impress even the most hardened audiophile.

BMW's voice-activated virtual assistant is also a cut above most voice control systems in its responsiveness and ability to change things like the climate control settings. We took some issue with the integrated navigation system, though, including its busy map display and the way the system doesn't provide an initial bearing to a destination. It can be difficult to know whether the destination is in front, behind, or 2 miles off your intended path.

Storage & cargo

How’s storage and cargo? The X7 offers 12.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, 48.6 cubic feet behind the second, and a maximum 90.4 cubic feet with both rows folded. That's competitive with its main rival, the Mercedes-Benz GLS, but short of big American luxe SUVs like the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator.

The X7's split tailgate helps prevent items from sliding out of the back if you're parked on a driveway incline, a thoughtful touch. There's also a button to lower the air suspension if you're loading an especially heavy item. All doors offer sizable pockets, along with cupholders in each row. The front cupholders are even heated and cooled, another neat touch not found in non-luxury SUVs.

Is the BMW X7 a good value? The X7's interior features copious leather and wood finishings, plus party tricks like glass controls and an illuminated panoramic sunroof. We especially liked our test model's Sparkling Copper Metallic paint, which seems like a misnomer at first. From a distance, it looks pastel blue/gray, but on closer inspection (and in direct sunlight) you can see the gold/copper undertones. Very cool. Pricing for the X7 is average for the class. The X7 doesn't set new standards, but it does offer solid value for the money.

How’s the fuel economy? The EPA estimates that the X7 xDrive40i achieves fuel economy of 22 mpg in combined city/highway driving. That's near or at the top of the luxury three-row SUV class, but some hybrid-powered rivals offer better fuel economy.

X factor

Even the base X7 is pretty fun to drive and makes a lot of sense. The strong inline-six means you no longer have to choose between efficiency and performance, which makes this combination an intriguing value proposition. While not exactly an M4 on stilts, the X7 is a solid performer. Some rivals are content to just lumber along. The X7 suffers in the design department, though. The grille and squinty headlights are a little polarizing, but overall the X7 has a lot of little extras that will impress owners and their friends every day.

The 2025 BMW X7 is a seven-passenger three-row SUV offered in two trim levels: xDrive40i and M60i. BMW also offers an Alpina XB7 version of the X7 that offers enhanced performance and luxury, which we review separately on Edmunds. Powering the xDrive40i is a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six cylinder engine with 375 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque. Sure, the X7 M60i's monstrously powerful V8 is attractive, but given the base xDrive40i's superb balance of efficiency and performance, we don't think the higher trim is worth the spend. Plus, many of the added features you'll get with the M60i are available on the xDrive40i as stand-alone options or in packages.

Competitors to consider

Take a look at the Mercedes-Benz GLS, which manages to match or exceed most of the X7's strengths in a similarly sized and priced package. When it comes to tech and luxury the GLS has the X7's measure. And though the GLS is a respectable-handling SUV, it lacks the X7's well-rounded sharpness. Edmunds spotlight: Even the biggest BMW trades on handling and refinement over size

It won't surprise you to hear that the X7 handles better and is more manageable on the road than bigger luxe utes like the Cadillac Escalade and Jeep Grand Wagoneer. But you may be surprised to hear that even when fitted with its base engine the X7 accelerates quicker than those American SUVs. What's more, there's a sharpness to its steering and braking that most three-row utes simply lack. It's not an M4, but it also won't embarrass itself on a mountain road. The eight-speed transmission offers paddles for manual control — a hint that BMW knows buyers will want to drive this SUV with purpose. And the EPA rates it at 22 mpg combined with the base engine, a reasonable figure for the segment.

2025 BMW X7 M60i 4dr SUV AWD (4.4L 8cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 8A)

Smooth driving and riding experience, hardly any road noise. The adjustable settings to the driver whether it be driver's seat or adjusting the lift of the vehicle to be able to get in more easily. The hands off/gesture controls are a plus especially when needing to pay attention to the road and driving safely. The safety features are remarkable!

Very comfortable with lots of room, driver can be 6'5" and has 2nd row leg space for a 6'5" passenger and still haul golf clubs and suitcases. Handles like a dream!
