2019 BMW X7 xDrive40i 4dr SUV AWD (3.0L 6cyl Turbo 8A)
I've owned all the major luxury brands and wanted a large SUV with three rows that looked amazing, interesting to drive and all tricked out. Cayenne and Rover would be at the top except for the third row. The new Escalade/Yukon/Tahoe would have been considered but did not come out when I was shopping. I like the looks of those, but not sure about handling. I chose the BMW X7 over the … Mercedes GLS because I loved the low grumble of the X7 even with the base engine and the handling seemed less boring than the GLS. The newer GLS also seemed very muted in design and not commanding as the current trend is.
I bought a one year old 2019 X7 with M sport, 2nd row captain chairs, upgraded leather/multi way seats, parking assistance, cold weather, premium package and M sport brakes. I use this car for all family activities from kayaking, hiking, soccer practice, road trips, not just a garage show item.
I've had the X7 for a year now and here are my thoughts:
Pros:
The luxury of the seats, material and finish is amazing. Every time I close the door I feel like I am in a bank vault.
The exterior look with M-Wheels is amazing, love just looking at it, even with the large grill. Seems almost all large SUVs have massive grills and large pick-ups are getting even bigger. The X7 facia is almost small in comparison with the Escalade.
The interior room is good and seats are amazing. Hard to go to any other car after getting used to the massage seats
The split tailgate is super useful with kids and outdoor activities. Can't imagine how we changed shoes after a muddy hiking trip before
The braking is best among many cars I've had outside of Porsche and even comes close to that.
Lighted sky roof and third row sky roof is a nice party feature
Infotainment and Apple Car play is good, with touch or knob feature. Voice command is useless like pretty much every car I have had. Updated BMW app seems good, with send to car feature now available.
Parking maneuverability is good and 360 feature with memory for garage front cam is handy.
Minus
The handling while I said interesting, it is not super. There is incredible body movement on turns and anything outside of Sport mode should be avoided on freeways and winding roads. With Sport Mode it is decent. I feel like I am driving an 85 Cadillac Fleetwood with the X7 comfort mode engaged and driving on winding roads. Kind of strange on a Beamer. It is a tall 5000+ lb SUV, but still. Did I mention head room is amazing?
The acceleration with base engine from 0-40 is lackluster in city driving. Unless you push hard most cars leave me at the signal light. Wish I had a bit more starting juice after spending this amount of money. The power on freeway passing is much better and totally enough power there. Again Sport modes helps.
The front doors have an aggressive radius versus straight edge so I always need to watch my face when I open the door in a tight parking space so I don't get hit when opening.
The glove box is the smallest I have seen and next to useless. Honda and more practical choices obviously win the storage test.
Captain seat do not fold flat. Not planning on using the X7 for carpentry, but the occasional airport Costco purchase might be nice without delivery.
Overall a solid car that loves the highway and long trips, not so much in the city. Would I buy it again - Yes. If your driving is all city, might want to consider Q7. If you want pure size and command then maybe Escalade/Yukon. For slightly more space MB GLS. The X7 is good balance of luxury and some interesting drive dynamics, though not typical BMW sporty.
