Overview
The Volkswagen ID.4 is the people's electric vehicle, a five-seat SUV that's ideal for families or people looking to get their first EV. It's one of the more inexpensive electric SUVs available and boasts roomy seating and many standard driver assist features that can make driving easier. Notably, Volkswagen also builds the ID.4 in the United States. That means the ID.4 is one the few electric vehicles that currently fully qualifies for the full $7,500 federal tax credit.

Am I Ready for an EV?
- EV ownership works best if you can charge (240V) at home or at work This typically means a 240V home installation, but you could also have a similar setup at your office or other places your car is already parked for several hours each day. Don't expect a regular household outlet (120V) to suffice unless you've got a plug-in hybrid, in which case overnight charging at home is feasible.
- If you can’t charge at home, charging at a charging station could take at least 10x longer than at a gas station With public charging infrastructure still in its infancy, the user experience can be maddeningly inconsistent. Tesla owners tend to rave about the reliability and speed of the company's proprietary Supercharger stations, but rival DC fast options have thus far been plagued by technical issues and overcrowding. It's an evolving landscape and our best advice is to do your research on the available options for the EV you want to buy.
- Adding a 240V home charging system could cost up to $1,600 or more If your existing electrical service can handle the additional demands of EV charging, you may be able to add Level 2 charging at home for less than a grand, including installation. But your costs will multiply if you need to upgrade your electrical panel or add a dedicated circuit.
Edmunds spotlight: More power and new touchscreen
Volkswagen is equipping the 2024 ID.4 with more powerful electric motors. The single-motor rear-wheel-drive ID.4 will make 282 horsepower, which is a big increase from last year's 201 hp. The power increase makes the single-motor ID.4 considerably quicker when accelerating up to highway speeds. The dual-motor ID.4 also gets a bump to 335 hp. Also in store is a new touchscreen interface. Fitted to ID.4s with the battery upgrade, this system has a bigger 12.9-inch touchscreen and revised control and menu interface. We expect that it will be easier to use than the older 12-inch system. Base ID.4s will continue on with the older 12-inch touchscreen, however.
Competitors to consider
You have quite a few models to choose from if you're shopping for an electric SUV. At Edmunds, we recommend you also check out the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 and Tesla Model Y. These models are generally sportier to drive, and some versions have more range than the ID.4, but the ID.4 is still pretty compelling because of its overall value.
What’s it like to live with?

Rated for you by America's best test team.Performance
7.5/10
How does the ID.4 drive? Volkswagen upgraded the ID.4's electric motors for the 2024 model year. At our test track, our test ID.4 Pro S with the single electric motor accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds. That's a bit quicker than most other rival SUV EVs we've tested with a single motor. Volkswagen says the dual-motor ID.4 should need 4.9 seconds to get to 60 mph, which is also a pretty quick time.
Unfortunately, the ID.4's speedy acceleration isn't backed up by similarly sporty handling. Volkswagen's engineers focused more on comfort than out-and-out handling. As such, EVs such as the Ford Mustang Mach-E or Kia EV6 are more fun to drive overall. The ID.4 provides a decent amount of regenerative braking when you lift off the accelerator but won't bring you to a complete stop without using the brake pedal. In general, this is a smooth EV to drive. The tight turning radius makes for easy parking too. It's just not particularly fun.

Comfort
7.5/10
How comfortable is the ID.4? The ID.4 rides comfortably on the highway, though hitting bigger bumps can cause some noticeable up-and-down motions. That's not to say it's uncomfortable; it just meets the status quo in this class. The front seats are cushy but lack the support and adjustment needed to be truly comfortable on longer drives.
The climate control system works well and is operated mostly through the touchscreen. There are the typical temperature and fan adjustments, and Volkswagen included some special commands such as "warm feet" or "fresh air" that automatically adjust the settings.

Interior
8/10
How’s the interior? The ID.4's interior is a blend of familiar Volkswagen touches with some of the latest in-car tech and driver aids you'll find in this class. The cabin is spacious in both rows, with plenty of head- and legroom, and the taller ride height makes it easy to get in and out. There's also good visibility in all directions thanks to the big windows.
The ID.4's latest climate system interface is much improved compared to earlier iterations. In particular, the backlit controls for the temperature and volume adjustment make it much easier to adjust settings at night. Unfortunately, the ID.4 still has goofy window controls. Volkswagen only includes two for the driver plus a toggle to switch to control the rear windows. That toggle is annoyingly unresponsive at times. We can't understand how this is in any way better than just using four individual window switches like every other car.

Technology
8/10
How’s the tech? The ID.4's available 12.9-inch center touchscreen is easy to use. The built-in navigation system is also one of the better ones around for overall intuitiveness. The voice controls work well and offer a wide array of commands that include entering addresses in navigation and adjusting the climate control. If you prefer to use your own device, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available, as are a plethora of USB ports. The sound quality of the ID.4's standard stereo is pretty mediocre, however.
The ID.4 comes standard with a lot of driver aids, including adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance and automatic parking. It all worked well in our testing. Competitors like the Model Y and Mach-E offer hands-free driving capabilities, something Volkswagen lacks.

Storage
8.5/10
How’s the storage? The ID.4 features a pretty clever interior, with great storage both in the cabin and in the rear hatch area. The rear cargo area offers a decent 30.3 cubic feet of space, opening up to 64.2 cubic feet when the seats are lowered. That's about on par with rivals as well as gas-powered small crossovers. The 60/40-split rear seat folds flat and even with the cargo floor, though the load floor itself is a bit high. There's even more storage under the load floor, but the ID.4 doesn't offer a front trunk.
Up front, a configurable center console area with removable cupholders and partitions makes for an ultra-flexible front cabin. The door pockets are generously sized too. And the rear seat room makes this the best mainstream EV for car seats, with easy access anchors. This is a very family-friendly EV.

And the rear seat room makes this the best mainstream EV for car seats, with easy access anchors. This is a very family-friendly EV.
Range and Efficiency
7.5/10
How are the range and efficiency? The latest ID.4 has EPA estimates that range from 209 miles to 291 miles on a full charge. On the Edmunds EV Range Test, the single-motor rear-wheel-drive ID.4 drove 299 miles on a single charge. That's 8 miles better than the EPA estimate and 11 miles more than the previous single-motor ID.4 we tested. All-wheel-drive models have an EPA-estimated range of 263 miles, though we haven't had an opportunity to test one yet. Both EPA and real-world numbers are on par for the class, though some rivals can exceed 300 miles on a single charge.
The EPA further estimates that the single-motor ID.4 uses 30 kWh of electricity for every 100 miles driven. We were right on target for the single-motor in our testing, measuring consumption at 29.8 kWh/100 miles. This is also about average for a small electric SUV.

Value
7.5/10
Is the ID.4 a good value? The ID.4 features a well-designed interior. The upholstery looks and feels nice, and the leather-wrapped steering wheel feels good in your hands. Some of the plastic materials look and feel a bit cheap, however. It's also important to note that the ID.4 is eligible for a full $7,500 tax credit. Many rival EVs don't currently qualify for this credit, at least from a purchase standpoint.
Volkswagen offers a four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper and powertrain warranty and an eight-year/100,000-mile battery warranty. None of the coverage is particularly noteworthy for this class. The ID.4 also comes with three years of 30-minute complimentary fast charging on the Electrify America network, as well as two years/20,000 miles of free maintenance, though EVs typically require little regular servicing.

Wildcard
7.5/10
The ID.4 is fine to drive but doesn't quite have the same performance potential as the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Kia EV6 or Tesla Model Y. Nor does it turn heads in the same way other EVs will. But we suspect the ID.4's comfort and utility will be more important draws for EV shoppers.
Which ID.4 does Edmunds recommend?
We recommend the Pro. It's the most affordable way to get the ID.4's higher-capacity battery pack for more range as well as the new 12.9-inch touchscreen. In the past, we recommended getting the ID.4 in its dual-motor configuration because of its quicker acceleration and superior wet-weather traction. However, this year's more powerful single-motor ID.4 should be the more compelling value purchase.

2023 Volkswagen ID.4 Pro S Plus 4dr SUV w/SK On Battery, 170kW DC Fast Charging Capability (electric DD)
I have read the Edmunds review and many EV’s and I drove quite a few, Hybrid’s and EV’s. I decided to purchase the Pro S front drive only ID.4……I would give it a 9.5. It is extremely quick and so fun to drive. It is a solid vehicle and hugs the road like it is glued down. I think if you compare to a $100,000 EV yea there will be a difference in power, but frankly you do not need it. I … have owned BMW’s, Porsche’s, Lexus, Audi’s, Infinities and driven race cars. Anymore power is basically dangerous for most drivers to understand and control a vehicle that goes 0-60 in under 5 seconds. I am not sure how Edmunds does their “real world” mileage but using the regenerating feature on the ID.4 when I charge to 100% I have a range of 340 miles! I to me definitely is one of the best looking small SUV EV’s. Many look quirky and down right ugly, as if they are trying not to look like a gas vehicle. Loads of room inside, and I am 6’3 250lbs and have no issue in and out as well as headroom, shoulder room etc. We have a car seat in the back for our 2 yr old grandson and the front seat has room for a person t sit it in it unlike the Lincoln Aviator I used to have! All in all best car I have purchased for a while and enjoy driving of instead of my other $135,000 vehicle.

2023 Volkswagen ID.4 AWD Pro S 4dr SUV AWD (electric DD)
Not sure how this compares to Tesla but certainly lower priced than similarly equipped. Software needs work and UI is not intuitive and slightly buggy. Otherwise it's an amazing car and had a great experience driving 500 miles in a day. Charging network is great in California and never felt I would run out of juice.

2023 Volkswagen ID.4 Pro S 4dr SUV w/SK On Battery, 170kW DC Fast Charging Capability (electric DD)
Have a 2023 ID.4 Pro S with the SK battery and have owned it for a bit over 6k miles now. Absolutely love it, it’s an excellent vehicle, roomy, quiet, comfortable, great ev range and battery charging speeds.
Really nothing to complain about, no issues with the car, the infotainment issues are over stated especially with the newer software, the software on this car is just as good as … any other car software I’ve tried, never had any issues with it.
Cross shopped Ioniq 5, EV6, Mach-E and Model Y and ended up going with the ID.4, the ride in the ID.4 is just excellent better than any of those cars especially the Model Y and Mach-E. The software is not an issue like I said before and the controls aren’t really either, you get used to them almost immediately. The only issue I have is that the middle controls are not illuminated at night, but I got used to it within a couple minutes of driving at night.
The value of the ID.4 was also some of the best out of all of those cars, it also has the full tax credit which the Ioniq 5 and EV6 don’t have.
The only other criticism I have is the audio system isn’t the best thing in the world, it’s fine but not great. But aside that and the illuminated controls I have absolutely no other issues with the car. I love it. Would absolutely recommend.
Great looking ID.4 and very efficient

2023 Volkswagen ID.4 AWD Pro 4dr SUV AWD (electric DD)
I have had this car for 6 weeks and my commute driving has been really pleasant.
My ID.4 Pro S AWD has all power needed for normal driving.
First 1200 miles efficiency is 3.7 miles per kW (3.7 x 77kW usable = 285 miles range).
Only 20% highway, and heater not needed much. The heated seats and steering wheel have been just right.
The sunroof is excellent with automatic cover that … closes in any position.
Trailer hitch is good without $1000 extra charge. (Y)
Sound system has been plenty good.
User controls have been easy to use and I turn off most of the automatic features like easy entry driver seat and "unlock when approaching".
Free charging for 3 years is great and convenient right near my house.
Only one bug is that drivers window goes down sometimes when it should go up. Still this gets 5 stars.

Volkswagen ID.4 vs. Kia Niro EV
The ID.4 bests the Niro's range, but only once you've stepped up to the larger battery pack. The Kia's standard pack offers an EPA-estimated 253 miles, but like the ID.4, the Niro topped that in our real-world testing. But those looking for more performance or traction will be disappointed by the Kia, which is only available with a single motor driving the front wheels.
Volkswagen ID.4 vs. Hyundai Ioniq 5
The Ioniq 5 offers something for everyone, from a reasonably priced base model to a big-battery all-wheel-drive model that can out-accelerate many sports cars. A comfortable ride quality, easy-to-use features and distinctive styling are other qualities that help the Ioniq 5 lead the class.
Volkswagen ID.4 vs. Ford Mustang Mach-E
Ford's all-around excellent electric crossover also serves as a great foil for the VW. Whereas the ID.4's infotainment screen menus can be confusing and slow to respond to your touch, the Mustang Mach-E's system just works. The Mach-E is also available in more configurations, potentially making it a better fit for what you're looking for. Check out Edmunds' long-term test of a Mach-E to learn more.
