The ID.4 is Volkswagen's only electric SUV and was one of the first EVs from a major automaker to take on the Tesla Model Y when the VW launched in 2021. The ID.4 is attractively priced and provides competitive range and cargo space, but it's never stood out from the competition. Volkswagen has made some notable improvements over the years, but the automake hasn't yet given its core electric vehicle a comprehensive update. We believe 2026 will be the year it happens. As with most midcycle refreshes, we expect revised front and rear styling, an updated interior with VW's latest tech, and improvements to driving range and power.
Edmunds spotlight: Needed improvements
An ID.4 refresh should deliver a better electric SUV. On our wish list is revised styling to make it stand apart from the current ID.4, which has an anonymous design that fails to make an impression. A boost in power will be welcomed, but more importantly, we hope its driving range increases. We'd like to see a max range of over 300 miles, a number that most of the ID.4's main rivals already exceed. VW doesn't need to alter the way the ID.4 drives, but class leaders like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 are more comfortable. All that and an upgrade in interior materials quality will make the ID.4 a more competitive EV.
Competitors to consider
The Volkswagen ID.4 is part of the ever-growing compact electric SUV segment. The pleasant Hyundai Ioniq 5 and sporty Kia EV6 are two top rivals that boast rapid charging speeds. The Chevrolet Equinox EV is one of the newer entries, and compared to the ID.4, it's more affordable and delivers a longer range. The Tesla Model Y's recent refresh made the EV notably better, and the fun-to-drive Ford Mustang Mach-E also deserves a look.
