Re-Designed Rav4

I just got my new Rav4 yesterday but have completely fallen in love with it. I researched all the small SUV's and decided the Rav4 was the best value. I wish the blind spot monitor was an option for the XLE. Everyone that has seen it has commented on how it looks much more expensive than the $23,600 that we paid for it.

My 4th And Best RAV4 Yet!!!

I've owned the '96, '01, and '06 RAV 4's and loved everyone of them. Got over 100K out of each with no problems whatsoever. This '13 I just bought looks like it will beat all the others. It's more comfortable, has more guts, looks sharper, and rides quieter than the previous generations. The ride is a little stiff but I feel very secure in this vehicle. We also own a '12 Sienna, and this RAV is just as comfortable. I'm looking forward to many years of driving pleasure with this baby.

This is my first SUV, I've had it for 1 month and driving 600 miles. Initially, no matter how fun it was to drive, I questioned my decision to get the Rav4. The dash display told me my MPG and I was less than thrilled. However, I decided to track my own stats and I have no remaining doubt that I made the right choice. I just gassed up and calculated 29.8 mpg. I traded in a 2001 Mazda 626 that got 23, and this ride is so much more comfortable and fun! The rear-view isn't too limited and it has loads of power and spunk. Extremely comfortable and well-designed cockpit. Classy-looking, too. Quiet, smooth cabin and fantastic sound clarity in stereo & Bluetooth. Recommended!

Just a short review. Have had my new Rav for a week and 500 miles of driving. It replaces my horrible 2010 Equinox which was trouble times two. My new Rav4 drives fantastic, is fun, comfortable and is a great buy. Exterior is great looking, interior same, have had a dozen people comment or ask to see the car. The electronic system is great, entune system working perfectly and with the upgraded JBL system, audio is incredible. I cannot believe how. Great my old Philadelphia rock stations sound in HD radio. I actually like to drive again with the new Rav, I put on about 2,000 miles per month, it is now not such a chore with such a great vehicle.

Bought XLE June 26 2013 and I love it!!! Have 2000 miles and get about 27 miles per gallon in city. Have not made any road trips yet. I am 5'11" and my husband is 6'2" and we both are quite comfortable. Vehicle has good pick up so no worries about merging onto interstate. Test drove Mazda CX5 and Honda CRV. RAV4 offered more options in the base price and the cabin was not as noisy. Black carpet shows every speck of sand. Floor mats are a flimsy for the extra cost (nearly $300.00). Ordered an extra set online (must more cost friendly) to have on hand. "RAVen" (I have named her) is a real looker. Removal of "barn" rear door was the best thing ever!!!! 9/14/2016 Still love "RAVen". I have 45,0000 miles on her. She still looks and runs very well. I thought I ordered leather seats but they are not. The synthetic fabric stains easily and things like blue jean and ink from paper transfers are impossible to remove. Think Toyota should offer a choice of leather or the synthetic fabric. The gas millage is not as good as when she was new. Averages about 24 miles per gallon in city and a little more (28) on highway. Will be replacing her in January 2017, not because I have any issues, because I will be retiring and want a new vehicle. Would consider a RAV4 if the body style changes greatly. 3/15/2017 Gave car to my daughter. RAVen had approximately 53000 miles on her. She is still a great car and has had no issues other than routine maintenance. The dealer ship where the vehicle was purchased was outstanding. The body style did not change drastically since 2013; therefore; I bought a 2017 Nissan Rogue SV. This my last review is a resounding two (2) thumbs up!!!!!!!

I have had my Rav for 2 weeks and 1,700 miles and am very impressed. My job requires a lot of traveling and I traded my 2012 Silverado White Diamond Edt for it and could not be happier. I have driven a full size truck for the last 10yrs and was afraid at first about trading in on what is considered a compact suv. My mileage at the moment is 24mpg with all highway, which is a great improvement over the 15 I was getting w/my Silverado. The interior space is very surprising and comfortable. It has plenty of power for interstate driving and more features than I would have ever expected for the price I got it for. I would check it out if you want something thats practical and comfortable.

We bought the car in mid-August. We really like the Blind Spot Monitor option. Also, an unexpected but convenient feature is that the music files on a USB drive can be played back directly. We also like the memory function of the driver’s seat. Our main complaint is that the ride is really bumpy, even bumpier than my 20-year-old Corolla. Another thing is that the air outlets have begun to make an abnormal sound when switching the air flow from the setting of upper body and feet to the setting of upper body. Since the car has less than 2000 miles on it and it already got a problem, I really question the long term reliability of this vehicle.

We purchased this vehicle in November and have found some things we like & don't like. We really like the blind spot monitor. This feature should be available on more cars. We also like the style of the car and rear cross traffic alert. We are extremely disappointed in the Rough, Bumpy Ride. It is a great riding car on the PA turnpike or a smoothly paved road. Our limited model has 18 inch Bridgestone tires and it provides a very Rough Ride. My voice even vibrates when I'm trying to talk to anyone in the car at the time with me. Don't think this will be a vehicle my husband and I will grow old with in our senior years.

Toyota meesed it up - Hood Vibrates - Watch it.

Toyota with the RAV created this segment. Instead of improving with every iteration they are down grating on quality, workmanship, reliability and customer satisfaction. I own the 2013 Limited version since April 2013. It has 9,000 kilometers, the main issue is that the hood vibrates while driving on uneven pavement in the city and on smooth pavement on the highway. This is a design issue that Toyota needs to address. Toyota chose to have a flimsy hood for less weight. Two trips at the dealership could not resolve the problem. Toyota is referring me to the dealer, even though the dealer stated clearly there is nothing they can do to address this issue. Toyota is behaving arrogantly.

Overall the car does a great job. I live in the North East and we get our share of snow. The car handles great in the snow. Sometimes we will get 6 to 8 inches overnight. I don't have time to clear my driveway in the morning and the car cuts right through the snow. The car is roomy, handles great, and is fun to drive. There are however some minor annoyances with the car. For example, I would like to push the key-fob lock and lock the doors before closing them however the car does not allow that. If you leave the hatch open while driving the car will continuously beep. Very annoying when you moving something and can't close the hatch. There's no lock for the glove compartment.

The good: Technically, mechanically, this car is fantastic. It has the smoothest transmission, very nice pick up, and very quiet. The not-so-good: The XLE version does not have power seats. Weird. Detail review: I have been researching crossovers since almost a month. I thought about getting a CRV, and I test drove 3 different ones, but all of them were noisy. The engine noise is high, combined that with the road noise was the deal breaker for me. The RAV4 is noiseless. Mechanically, this is a fantastic vehicle. The pick up is great, and it has three modes: eco, regular, sport. Loved the power steering on it too (better than CX-5, IMO).

Owned 2013 RAV4 since June 2013. Gave vehicle to my daughter last month (Feb 2017) - not because there was anything wrong with it or that I was no no longer satisfied. I retired and wanted a new vehicle. Would have gone with another RAV4 if the body style had changed more over the years. The dealership (the only one in Tallahassee Florida so you know who you are) offered the bests service of any I've worked with. Really wanted to stay with them but could not find a body style I like. "RAVen" had 53000 miles on her and provided great reliability. Only had to have routine maintenance. Still got good gas milage and it appears to be the average (26) for vehicles in that class. The head lights need some major improvements. To get more visibility at night, I used the fog lights when traveling on unlit streets. My last review is a resounding two (2) thumbs up!!!!

We have a 2013 Rav 4 Limited. It is perfect size for buzzing around town and for short trips as well. Easy to maintain. Very roomy inside. We often carry lots of stuff between our two houses plus two small dogs with plenty of space for all. The only thing missing is lumbar support for the passenger. Toyota universally doesn’t put it in because “all the stress is on the driver but it would be appreciated by passengers with bad backs. Toyota has a deaf ear to that. My wife principally uses it and loves it. Would buy another. Traded it for a 2019 Lexus NX primarily because it is the same size in 2021. Happily received $19,000 in trade. During the 8 years we had the Rav, we replaced the tires, brakes and shocks. Great investment and great quality.

Main family vehicle owned for 3 years

So, this is our main car! We go everywhere in this thing (wife and 4 kids). The Pros: It is a Toyota with great resale value, 0 mechanical problems than regular maintenance (oil changes, brakes and tires), comfortable interior for the entire family, LOTS of cubby hole storage hidden all over this car, handles great on sunny/rainy/snowy days (I feel very comfortable with my wife taking a drive in the snow with the kiddos in this SUV). For the 4 cyl engine, it has a higher tow capacity than any other comparable SUV I have found. The Cons: Not really much to say here though have two very minor things to comment on: 1) the reverse camera does not allow you to toggle for directional tracking of where your car will be with the angle of the wheels. This is a very handy feature to have that is missing here. 2) The USB plug barely charges your phone. As this overrides the BT function of the radio and phone, your music and such are fed through the USB, but your battery will still drain. Leaving BT on and having my iPhone plugged in on a 2hr drive my phone lost 23% battery life instead of charging. Road performance. I have driven Toyota's many times in my life and am a huge fan of the Rav. It has a peppy pickup and go from stop or while in motion. Sometimes (especially in my town where speed limit is often 25mph) maybe a little too much pep? I find myself taking my foot off the gas very quickly to coast and ride the brake time to time in residential areas. The visibility for the driver can hardly be beat than with the Rav. Very few blind spots. A U-turn does require a little more than a standard 2 lane road with the expansion of the wheel base, but still, for the extra foot length of the car to its predecessor, I'll make the swap. Road noise is there but not bad at all. You feel the road without feeling like you are being beaten to death by it, lol. A smooth ride in a vehicle that can still hug curves at decent rates without squealing tires. Interior comfort. My kids have plenty of leg room in the back, and if the front passenger and driver are willing to give up a very little bit of theirs, adults can be in the backseat comfortably. The cup holders for front and back are well placed, and the seats are comfortable. Personally i feel the front seats have a bit more padding in them for the rump than the back seats. As I am a bigger guy and my knees don't like me squatting into and out of sedans much any more, I find the access very easy without having to climb up and in. The back area of the car with the rear seat up is quite large for a small SUV. My Mastiff ( a 160lb dog) fits back there comfortably. If I need both of my dogs to go somewhere, then the seats have to be folded down. Gas MPG is decent for an SUV with AWD. Before we moved to the mountains we were getting approx 26 in city and 32 on highway. Now I need to get my car tuned for the altitude as we are down to 22/28 MPG.

I used Edmunds (among other sites for comparison) to help me do research for a new car, before I went out and test drove them. I dislike going to car dealerships, but I can say with confidence that I have improved with how to deal with them. Plus I had done my own research beforehand, and knew what to look at and expect (as well as knowing when a dealer was lying to me). Well here is my review of this lovely car after having it for about 4 months now, and some improvements that I think should be made for the future.

Bought my 2013 limited the end of June. This is a great car in so many ways. I know it will be reliable and I am already seeing the savings from my 04 explorer. 28mpg combined and 32 hwy. The power memory seats are great as is the auto liftgate. I would not have bought this car if it still had the sideways gate. The stereo is not great. actually it is bad. Too much sound up front and it is very bright and "scratchy" I have played with the controls endlessly. This is annoying as I love to listen to all kinds of music as I drive.

RAV 4 rough ride

We noticed a very rough ride after we purchased the car. The dealer said we could buy new tires. We declined. We feel every bump in the road. Hopefully readers have some suggestions. Our current solution is with additional outdoor cushions which we place on the front seats. This is awkward but it helps. RJM The rough ride is a real problem. After two years I have gotten used to it. However, we take our other car, a Lexus, for any long trips The two other problems are the poor design of the map console which is impossible to see in bright sun light and backing where the visibility is limited and in sun light you can’t use the back camera viewed through the console

Overall, I am very happy with this car. I have been able to test out the safety features in the snow and on icy roads and any slippage (due to sub-par snow tires) is immediately corrected. I feel safe, which is my #1 priority. I've read comments about feeling every bump in the road, maybe it is just because I've upgraded from a 2005 Camry, but I feel like I'm floating on clouds in this car. One thing I'm not crazy about is the rear-center seat. The car should be wide enough to have a regular 3-seat bench, not sure why it has this funky belt coming out of the ceiling. Second thing is the lift gate. I think a power lift gate should be standard. It is not easy to get open with your hands full. Especially on the LE model. It has a rear back up camera standard, but a manual lift gate? Why? Even my 2005 Camry had an auto open button on the key fob for the trunk. Then there's the headlights. Instead of just turning off automatically, there is an annoying, high-pitched beep to remind you to turn them off manually. I've never driven a car made after 2000 that didn't turn the lights off automatically when you lock the car. I would gladly give back the back up camera to have auto-off lights and a power lift gate! My last complaint is storage. There is a glove box and small arm rest storage compartment, and under the center console is weird open storage that doesn't fit much. I can tell they were trying to make it look upgraded and modern, I'd gladly have old fashioned and functional! Despite my complaints, I am happy with this car and don't regret my purchase. I've always been happy with the low cost of ownership that comes with Toyotas and I like that I can confidently drive on snow and ice now. The little things do make the experience for me though, and I know the manual lights and lift gate will continue to grate on me...

We compared this car to the nice '14 Forester and bought this for its interior design and Toyota reliability. I'm not sure I would do it again. I'm 6-4, 225 lbs, and 53 years old & need a car that is higher, easy to get into, and gets good MPG. This RAV4 is high enough, but the shape of the front door causes me to have to contort my body just a bit to enter. I do have plenty of room in the front and my knees do not touch the dash. But, the car feels cheap. The hood vibrates/shakes on certain kinds of rougher paved and dirt roads. The silver & "graphite" trim both scratch really easily. Car handles well, though the ride is stiff. Speakers are much worse than Camry, more like Corolla.

This car is a great with the exception, I believe was not tested at night. The headlights gives very poor lighting in distance. I have 20/20 vision so it is not my eye vision. Driving in city streets and highways is very dangerous, I have talked to other owners and the complain is the same. When driving I have to have the lights in high beam. I believe there should be a recall with new light beams replaced.

Nice looking, more car like, great driving SUV. The new 6-speed transmission is great. Handling is very good. There are three modes to choose from, Eco, Sport, and the default. Seems to effect how the transmission is used. In heavy traffic I prefer Sport mode because the car stays in the proper gear so you don't have to brake all the time. Reasonably comfortable (I used to own a Buick). I upgraded to the 2013 model primarily for the top-hinged hatch. I make frequent trips with an inflatable kayak to the river and got tired of having to deal with the side opening door. Much easier to work with now. The back seat folds down nearly flat. A big plus.

Overall this car is very nice. I was previously an owner of a 2006 Honda CRV. When I compared the two in the 2013 models the Rav4 won out. However, after owing the car for a couple weeks I have some issues that I don't like about the design. First the low beam headlights are horrible. They are the worst of any car I have ever driven. There is a line across the lights that makes it so when I am driving I can't see very far up the road. It is fine with the high beams but you can't run those all of the time. I hate the rear pass' windows. They are small and they slope up toward the back blocking visibility making a blind spot. The rear window does not open so you can't haul anything.

I have had my RAV for almost five years now and it's been a great vehicle. Despite being the first year of the redesign, this SUV has been super reliable. I can't recall having anything fixed or repaired during the past five years. It's been that good! Aside from the reliability, the gas mileage is another highlight. I usually get 28 MPG in mixed driving, which is outstanding. I am a fairly conservative driver, but that is still outstanding. I love the blue interior lighting. Also, with 56K miles, I still have the original Toyo tires, which have worn very well. I'll probably need to get new tires at 60K miles. I have the basic sound system, not the JBL upgrade, and the sound is excellent...good powerful bass and crisp treble. The bluetooth and navigation work pretty well, although the nav has slow response time and sometimes misses the target location by a half mile or more! One gripe is that the fake leather gets very warm in the heat and doesn't breathe at all, leaving me with a sweaty back! The ride can be a little on the firm side too, especially at lower speeds on side roads. The highway ride is reasonably smooth and quiet. Lastly, the interior design is a bit of a mish-mash...lots of different colors and textures that don't always look like they belong together. Overall, I've been very happy with my '13 RAV4 Limited!

I have owed the 2013 RAV4 since June 2013. I love, love, love this car!!! Get good gas milage; 26 city; 31 hwy. The Toyota Care is outstanding. The only complaint I have is the upholstery. I bought what I thought was leather but it turns out to be Soft Tech which is a vinyl. The color is beige and stains very easily. Seats have blue jean staining and it will not come off! The dealership is no help on this issue. They "kinda" change the subject when I bring it up. I would buy the RAV4 again but would just go with the cloth seats unless genuine leather is offered. 3/26/2017 Gave vehicle to my daughter - not because there was anything wrong with it or that I was no no longer satisfied with it. I really like this vehicle. No, I think I love this vehicle. I bought this vehicle from my dad who had this before me and he loved it. He is 82 and was just ready for another vehicle. The interior is roomy, the instrumentation is easy to learn and view and the comfort of the seats is fine. Seats are not as comfy as the Volvo I just sold but are good for an SUV. Has the heated leather (or imitation) seats that are comfortable and easy to maneuver and the gas mileage is awesome, especially when you put it in Eco mode. My dad didn't know about the different settings (said he never knew they were there) due to their awkward location but I am fine with it. I don't switch modes when I am driving anyway, I keep it on Eco. At present, the tires that are on the vehicle do not ride smooth and make a humming noise but I am convinced that is due to the tires, not the vehicle. I drive 120 miles to and from work so I need comfort, economy, a good sound system and storage space for my "stuff," golf clubs, foldable chair, etc. So far this vehicle is excellent for what I need. I look forward to many years in this nice ride.

My dad had the previous 1st generation RAV4 and that thing lasted forever and took a beating so he had to have a new one. He got the base model to avoid all the unnecessary electronics nowadays. Inside is very roomy, cloth seats are good and textured. Dash is well laid out and material quality is more than acceptable. Acceleration is great around town and on the highway. I have a hard time keeping up in my 2014 Subaru WRX STI in stop in go traffic unless I ring my STI out. No idea what Car and Driver means when it called acceleration "tepid"...absolutely not true.

I owned a 2006 Rav4 (V6, 4-Wheel) and put 135K miles on it before purchasing my new I-4 Rav4 2013. It’s been a love-hate relationship with the new. I loved the old one. I have 3,500 miles on the 2013, which I purchased on 5/21. Today is 7/24/13. I bought the all-wheel drive and have been getting 28 mph, doing mostly highway/thruway driving. I tend to use ECO for long hauls on interstates, Sport for short bursts up hills, and the regular setting for other times. What I dislike is the odd placement of the ECO and Sport buttons, which must be activated way under the radio and NAV system. It’s hidden, inconvenient, and dangerous. The black bumpers streak terribly when washed.

I have had this vehicle since August 2013 and have had absolutely no issues with it. I was somewhat surprised at some of the reviews in this thread as I have owned many Toyotas and have never experienced a problem they could not fix. I live in Arizona and we may have smoother roads than some of the cooler weather states, but I have found the Rav4 ride to be exceptional for this vehicle class. The features available on the Limited are outstanding, everything works perfectly and I love the versatility of the transmission. Heck, you can treat it like a manual and in Sport mode that is fun. Bought it at end of lease!!

Toyota radio do not buy until they fix known issue

I just bought a 2013 Rav4, the volume of the radio goes up, down and also sounds muffled at times. If you plug your ipod, it stays in loading mode with out playing. It will also go off or the screen goes blank in the heat. The volume jumping up is startling and my 7 y/o says " stop that mom". When I take it to the dealer service dept. this is a known issue and the fix is usually to replace the radio. They said they replaced the radio, it continues to do it. I have been there 4 times and they do not know how to fix. They should fix this before putting them on the market for sale. This is a defect. I have concern for the longevity of the car. I have lost trust in Toyota, will not buy another.

This is my first Toyota. I am the original owner with about 70K miles since purchase. Had an issue with transmission shudder but recall replaced the torque converter at no charge and extended the warranty for the transmission to 150K. I have had the Toyota extended warranty to 100K with free oil and filter changes. Dealership service has been very good. As stated in the Edmunds review the vehicle is no speed demon [4 cylinder, 176 HP] however I have never found it to be lacking of power when I stand on the gas, it responds well. Interior [dash] is a bit plain but all controls are user friendly. Does not have navigation as I get better navigation from my cell phone. Fuel economy has been very good based on driving conditions. I average between 26 and 32 [city, highway] and am light on the gas when accelerating. Entry and exit is good as it sits up higher than sedans which are a problem particularly for exiting by my spouse and myself. Would like fold flat rear seats when hauling cargo, otherwise an all around good vehicle. Will consider buying another Rav4 but with all the competition in a few years the market may change considerably. With three Toyotas [two Prius and one Rav4] in our history we will likely stay with Toyota. They do need to upgrade the interior to bring a little more class and keep up with its competitors.

Four stars out of five so I'm telling you that I have had 6 years and 80,000 miles of trouble free performance from my 2013 Rav 4. I like the ride, the style and the convenience of the RAV4 Limited crossover. All I wanted in regards to power is to be able to hold 77 MPH on the highway with the air conditioning on and it does that. This was my first Toyota and I'm disappointed some quality issues. My moon roof started rattling the day after the warranty expired, the interior lighting is a joke, the rear head rests block the rear view mirror and the driver side seat pinches my bottom and isn't holding up well. The keyless entry has always been erratic. Sometimes I walk up to the car and it's unlocked when I know I locked it walking away. When I took it to the dealer, it works as expected. Nice car but I'll try another brand next time. I like my wife's Hyundai 2012 Tuscon a little better.

We had the Toyota RAV 4 Limited AWD since May 2013 and disposed of it April 2015. At first as liked the RAV. Then as we drove it little things just got annoying. Front seat driver and passenger shoulder to shoulder, the sliding console always moving at the wrong times, smaller steering wheel and guages. The Sport button and other buttons hidden behind shifter so low that you had to take your eyes off the road to make adjustments. My wife and I are not large people and we felt a little clostraphobic. What pushed us over the edge was that our 2 labs had no place to move in the back seat and the last straw was the short wheelbase and Bridgestone Duellers that caused every bump to vibrate the entire car. Have to mention that the Duellers were horrible in the snow. Pluses were gas mileage and looks. I couldn't take it anymore and bought a Highlander Limited and I haven't regretted that choice. Should have done that a year prior. Nevertheless, if you like a 1 person car and don't mind kidney vibrations the RAV is a good choice. All in all this is a one person car.

I have had my 2013 RAV4 for nearly a month now. It has several personalities: sporty (sport mode), spot-on (regular mode), and mild-mannered (econ mode). I have found it really valuable to have all three modes available to me and there are distinct differences between the modes. The car is quiet, easy to drive and park, and it is rather nimble. I have no problem reaching the advertised mpg if I am light on the pedal, and or use econ mode. It is a bumpy ride though, and some of the controls are difficult to reach. Overall, this vehicle is much more fun to drive than the Honda CRX, and has a better transmission.

I traded in my 2010 Tundra for the all new Rav4 and couldn't be happier! I LOVED my truck, but I DIDN'T love parking it, filling it up with gas, paying the $500 car tags every year, so on and so on. I am really loving all the money I have already saved, how easy it is to park and I am shocked at how comfortable the car and ride is in comparison to my Tundra (which I consider to be the best I've ever experienced). I am so happy I got the Rav4 and totally recommend it!

We bought this car to be able to take our dogs along with us as they love to go for rides. We also use it for daily transportation to work. The gas mileage has been great averaging between 28 to 29 MPG on winter-blend gas. (I expect the mileage to go up with summer-blend). We drive mostly city and 2 lane highways on our 32 mile round-trip to work. The ride is rough and we can feel every road imperfection and there is excessive tire noise. But, the car drives well with good power and smooth shifts and we are enjoying owning it. Would recommend this car but keep in mind its shortcomings. Even with these imperfections, it is a better car than the others we looked at: Ford Escape, Honda CRV, Kia

A great SUV for zipping around town, short highway travel, commuting, or heading to the great outdoors for fun weekends. One of the reasons I chose this vehicle amongst others in its size class was because, at the time of purchase, it had more cargo room with decently adjustable back seats. Even so, I did add a Thule cargo carrier for occasional extra luggage capacity. The transmission is versatile with three modes. Its 6 speed transmission with a 4 cylinder engine shifts gears more often than a 4 speed transmission with a 6 cylinder engine, but we also enjoy 27-29 mpg in the city using Eco mode. The three modes respond as follows: - Normal mode: Responsive shifting, great for busily driving around town and on the highway. - Eco Mode: Slower to shift, but shifts more smoothly, not as jumpy or punchy. We see better gas mileage during city and mixed driving. - Sport Mode: Favors shifting down 1 gear from Normal mode so that the transmission is wound tighter and the vehicle is more responsive. This is helpful on snowy and icy roads. Headlamps create a very clear wall of light for night driving with great visibility. On the interior, everything is well lit except for the power side mirror adjustment. There is no light behind this control, leaving you to feel around for it in the dark. It's a Toyota, so quality is good as expected. Oil changes uses synthetic oil, so they costs $80-$90 each, but they are only recommended every 10k miles, so that would average to about $40-$45 every 5k miles. I have kept up with the recommended 10k oil changes plus their recommended 5k checkups in between the 10k intervals. I needed a set of front brakes and new set of tires about the times expected. There were two repairs needed that were disappointing. Around 80k-90k miles, there were a few "spits" of coolant in the engine area. At the service department, we wiped them clean and kept a watch on it. Within 5k miles there were new drips--easy to see because Toyota uses a bright pink colorant in the coolant so that leaks are easy to detect (even slow leaks like this one). The water pump was replaced, which was a normally about a $500 repair. That was disappointing, but fortunately the extended warranty I bought at the time of purchase covered it. The second repair needed was at 107k. One morning there was an obvious leak from one of the seals. Fortunately this, too, was replaced under extended warranty, but otherwise it would have been an $800 dollar repair--$30 for the part but lots of labor as they have to take an entire day to remove the transmission to replace the seal. I talked with two service techs (separately) about whether I should be concerned and trade in the vehicle. But both said that either one of these repairs could have happened to anyone at any time and that I should not think it is an indicator of other problems to come. There are a few design downsides to be aware of: 1) The 4 cylinder engine is under-powered when you load the vehicle with people and luggage. Highway mileage on the interstate (75-80mph) + hill country + wind + rooftop cargo carrier reduces the mileage to 22mpg. Even without the cargo carrier, the same conditions reduce mileage to 24mpg. I WISH Toyota would have never dropped their 6 cylinder option. This vehicle needs 6 cylinders to be a good interstate highway travel vehicle. 2) The headrest design is crazy bad! It is too far forward and causes neck and shoulder tension. But for this problem I found a safe solution. Remove the headrest, turn it around backwards (which now makes it a bit too far from your head), and then purchase a headrest pad from http://www.addonheadrest.com/order.html. The distance to my head is now perfect (not too close, not too far), and this makes all the difference in the seating comfort. 3) A thin paint job that scratches easily--too easily. So if you have an option of getting some kind of extra paint protective coating applied on a new vehicle, get it. 4) No rear seat air vents, USB port, or power socket. For a vehicle of this size, Toyota should have included all three as does the Hyundai Santa Fe (which I also tested, but it had other issues that led me to purchase the RAV4). 5) At about 85k miles, a small and intermittent transmission rumble occurs momentarily when it is 5th or 6th gear, the rpm's are between 1500-1900 rpm, and you accelerate slightly. It's the same rumble if you've driven a manual transmission and you're driving too slow in a higher gear and try to accelerate and get a little rumble that indicates you need to downshift. The senior Toyota service tech said this can happen as friction changes over time, and unfortunately cannot be adjusted. I now tend to use Sport Mode around town which changes the shift point and mostly eliminates the rumble.

Bought this car (XLE with AWD) in 2016 with high miles at the time (81,000). It now has 161,000 mi and it’s as solid, strong, reliable and comfortable as the day I bought it. Plenty of passenger and cargo room. Plenty of power from the 4cyl engine, especially in Sport mode. Great gas mileage for an SUV. And right up there with the most comfortable seats of any car I’ve owned (I’ve owned 43 cars). I replaced the tires with Pirelli Cinturatos, which enhanced the ride, quiet and road performance. One of the very best all-around cars for daily driving I’ve owned.

This SUV meets the needs of the typical SUV driver. It was priced reasonable, is very comfortable, has great space for passengers, as well as the cargo area. It is also designed to protect the passengers. I was rear-ended at a stop light. The idiot was driving at at least 35 mph. The back end crumple zone did its job and I was uninjured. The repairs were reasonable, and parts readily available. The gas mileage is very good, and I do a lot of stop/start in- town driving. I live in south Florida and the paint job still looks new. This is also the only vehicle I've owned where I could figure out all the different controls--very straight forward. Highly recommend this SUV.

RAV4 Limited has all the bells and whistles one needs in snowy Anchorage, Alaska. This vehicle exudes confidence on the road and is expected to provide many years of top-level reliability. Besides the backup camera (our first in a vehicle), the blind spot alert feature may be the best feature in this car. It works and makes one wonder how one could live without it! 2013 RAV4 Limited is a great vehicle!

The lighting for the flat screen display is too weak. It is unreadable in the daytime and very weak at night. The adjustment feature makes no difference. I applied anti-glare film which helps a bit. The hatchback doesn’t close properly. It goes down about six inches, beeps twice and then stops. I have to through this routine three to four times before it closes all the way. I have cleared the door memory per the owners manual but that didn’t solve the problem. I have the keyless entry and ignition feature. Do NOT lose your key chain transponder. It cost me $471 to replace. If you lose both units a new computer must be installed in the car and two new transponders made. That must cost a fortune. Read the troubleshooting chapter in the owners manual. If the transponder battery dies or the thing gets crushed you can still start the engine and run the car. If I were buying another car today I’d get another RAV without question.

love the suv, except for one thing. The transmission tends to "pause" between gears. I brought this problem to the attention of three dealerships, but was "blown off" each time. Finally I got a letter from Toyota extending the warranry on the power train, because of problems with the torque converter on some Rav4s. That hejped, but dealers still will not take any action without charging me for diagnostics. With the extended warr. I am not as worried now, but would still like to have it checked before I end up stranded out in some remote place. UPDATE: Sold the 2013 to an attorney. He took it in to dealership and demanded action on transmission problem. They tested it and confirmed what I had been trying to tell them for over a year. The dealer completed the work at no charge (over $1800.00), even though warrenty was over. It helps to be more forceful (and have a law degree I guess. )

I have owned Toyotas now for going on 15 years. I had decided I would never buy anything but Toyota. I had always had great sales experiences and liked the products. Recently I got a letter in the mail that my RAV 4 may have a faulty torque converter. After reviewing the signs I quickly knew that I had been experiencing the signs of this issue and had been for some time. I took my care to the dealership as instructed. After review I was told I did have a faulty converter but also now a failing transmission. Toyota refused to take responsibility for the fact that the defective part caused damage to my transmission. I have been to two other mechanics since who tell me there is no doubt the two are related. I have the unique opportunity of being a community health nurse in my area therefore I get to be really present in my community. I often have patients and other nurses ask me about my car my experience. I actually have convinced on of my fellow nurses and one customer to purchase a RAV4. Due to this situation and Toyotas refusal to stand behind their product I plan to use every opportunity I have to let everyone I come into contact with know that choosing Toyota is a mistake. I also have several friends who are car salesman, I am going to share this experience with them so that they can let interested car buyers know that Toyota does not stand behind their products and that they are a bad choice. I had planned to purchase another Toyota for myself and one for my daughter this year as she is going away to college. I will definitely never do business with you again and will make it my mission to ensure to encourage everyone I know to do the same.

The air conditioning is awful in this car. There are no vents for the back seat and therefore my hands are numb from the air conditioning while driving yet my daughter in the back seat is dripping in sweat. We bought this car in the winter and wish we had been aware of this. We asked Toyota about it and all we got is the car is small enough the vents weren't required. Well they went the cheap way and therefore it is awful to drive with passengers in the summer. We also had both metal bars that adjust the seats break already. You would think with a semi nice car the seats could be motor controlled. Other than these 2 big discomforts we like the car a lot.

I've owned a Rav4 since 2013, the redesign model year. If there's one thing you should know, it is this: The interior cabin is filled with rattles and squeaks. In less than three years (still under warranty as I write this), I've had no less than 4 different rattles and tapping noises to chase down. This started before 1K miles! The materials are very cheap Chinese plastics. I had one HUGE dash vent rattle fixed by the dealer. I'd been to the dealer a total of three times to fix the other noises and a "catch" in the moonroof cover to no avail. So, I've had to watch youtube videos on how to take apart the dash pieces to fix them myself. After taking the dash apart, one thing is apparent: If Toyota would use slightly better grade materials and have the factory workers put another few minutes into assembling the interior, this could all be avoided. The other thing you should know about is the Info- tainment system. Toyota Entune system is a joke and all Nav head unit functions are slow and clunky especially when compared to other auto makes from the same era. It's like Toyota was 3 years behind the others in what they offered and how smoothly it works… another obvious COST CUTTING measure. Other than the glaring interior quality issues and a slightly harsh ride on the 18" Bridgestone Dueler stock tires, the motor, transmission and brakes have been fine so far. Last words: I bought this car blindly on the history of owning 9 Toyotas before it. My mistake but who would think these guys could build such a P O S after a long history with the brand? My last Toyota. I'm moving to Mazda.
