Totaled my 2007 and purchased a used 2014 plug in

I was not looking to replace my 2007 Prius until a distracted driver rear ended me at 50 mph. Fortunately the Prius protected me and I walked away from a devastating hit. The next day I found a local dealership had a 2014 plug in with 40K miles for $15K out the door. I did not even hesitate on the purchase given my last Prius was bulletproof at 140K miles. One month with my 2014 Prius Plug In and I am in love all over again. I have a 40 mile commute all highway but I am averaging 63 MPG so far. My employer has a 240V station and I cost out at $.27/charge. The only cons are typically plastic interiors to save weight, no spare (found one locally) and a 14 mile range (good for local errands). I would gladly buy a Prius Prime next but I hope to run this plug in as long as my 2007 Prius sans a distracted driver. UPDATE - I have had the plug in now for over 6 months. No challenges to date. One rear caliper seized so I replaced and all brake pads (front and back) at the same time. Purchased a new 12V battery because the original was still in the auto. I hook a trickle charger to the fuse box leads during battery change so all settings would not be lost. Otherwise, the Prius Plug In is great! Now at 80K on the vehicle. No challenges or complaints to date. With COVID I only drive the car once a week to check all systems. I have added a trickle charger to the 12v which protects the battery well. Otherwise I hope my next review is more robust as the pandemic eases. Wishing everyone well during these times. Update Spring 2021. I have not driven the Prius much during the pandemic. The automobile still functions great with no challenges. I will report back if anything changes as we re-emerge from the crisis and return to a pre-covid environment. I do not think I will be commuting as much as in the past but I will keep the car nonetheless. Wishing everyone well. Update Spring 2022: I have not driven the car much since last years review. However, since a gallon of gas exceeds $5/gallon the Plug-In Prius is now my go-to car (and my wife even more so). For example, I make short runs for shopping and now I do exclusive driving in electric mode. My wife is of the same mindset. This original Prius Plug In does not give me much range on a charge but for local trips it is excellent since all shopping is within range. I believe I put less than 3 gallons of fuel in the Prius every 2 weeks now - it was a smart purchase in hindsight. In addition, I hooked up a solar panel 1.5 watts in the back and connected to the 12V battery. It appears to keep the battery on a slow trickle charge when I last stress tested the 12V. The Plug In Prius passed recent PA Inspection with no challenges. My wife plans on driving cross- state in a couple of weeks to see family in Pittsburgh, and we feel confident that she will enjoy the ride in the Prius. The only downside is I bought a full size spare that fits in the trunk (the extended battery takes up the normal wheel well for a spare so one did not come with this model) which will negate some space. But, it was worth the peace of mind to have a full sized spare just in case. This vehicle is a pleasure to own. I would recommend the Prius Prime now. Update Fall 2022: The Plug in Prius now has 93K miles. It is our workhorse, go-to vehicle post-COVID (if we are actually done with COVID). The car still performs well. One thing of notice is the battery holds a little less mileage when I first bought the car. Just a couple of miles I have noticed so it goes to prove that the battery does degrade over time but just marginally. I still use the electric component just around the neighborhood when running errands and then re-charge when expended. Usually, the power mode (hybrid) is 90% of the driving utilization. Next step - new tires in the spring! Any suggestions are welcome. All in all, a great purchase and I will plan on a more electrified model if I have a need to replace. Right now, I still enjoy this car. 6/8/23 Update at 98000 miles - Not much driving since I am still remote. We use it mainly for errands now, and we go with electric power only most of the time. On average, I replace three gallons every 2 weeks. We have another auto for long distance driving that is an Acura TL six cylinder for highway cruising. But I digress, the Prius is great. I just bought 4 new tires as dry rot set in on the tires from first purchase 5 years ago, replaced all air filters and did a once a year synthetic oil change. It is a great car. My wife would like (if we need to replace) another plug in hybrid as having the best of both worlds. Fantastic auto! Almost 2024 now and 98k miles. The auto is still running well. No challenges or complaints.

I love this car for many reasons. It just makes logical sense. It's reliable, it doesn't depreciate that much, it's safe, and no one steals this car because hybrids and electric car parts are in low demand and hard to interchange with other cars. In terms of electric features, I don't use it nearly as much as I should because I don't have a charger at home and as much as SoCal supports electric vehicles, I still don't have many use cases where I'm charging in public. I've owned a BMW in the past and I have to say, it's nowhere near as luxurious, but at the same time, I don't have to worry about it breaking down or having a costly repair.

UPDATE: Unfortunately, the car was totaled in a collision when we had had it for 36 months. My wife, driving alone, was not injured, and the accident was not her fault. As the car had been thoroughly dependable and achieved outstanding gas mileage, we were sorry about its early demise. However, we were astounded by the generosity of the insurance payout. This car actually appreciated during the three years we owned it! We so liked the electrical aspect of the plug-in Prius that we replaced it with an all-electric Kia Niro, which we love. UPDATE: I have now owned the car for 2 years and seven months and continue to be just as pleased with it. I have had no problems and am happy to recommend the 2014 plug-in Prius. UPDATE: Having owned the car for 18 months and driven 11000 miles, I continue to be totally pleased with my purchase. I have had no mechanical problems, and there are no squeaks or rattles. The city gas mileage is amazing, typically between 102 and 108 mpg. When I bought the car, I didn't realize how versatile the hatchback would be in transporting various items. I would definitely buy this car again. As I have solar panels, I wanted the pleasure of driving on electricity I produce. The 2014 plug-in Prius suites my needs perfectly, as its 11-mile range is adequate for doing errands in my small city. Buying an all-electric (such as a used Leaf ) was not practical for me because I wanted the option of being able to drive long distances. After six months of ownership, I am totally pleased with my purchase. I had read reviews of the car and was concerned by car testers' comments that the steering was numb and that the model was no fun to drive. As far as I am concerned, the steering, which is light, is fine, and I enjoy driving this car. An unanticipated bonus of having a small but heavy car is that it holds the road very well. I bought the car just for city driving, as I have a Subaru Outback (which I love) for highway driving. However, this Prius is proving so satisfactory that we have driven it on several 500-mile trips. On the each of these trips, the car has achieved gas mileage in the high 40s. With mostly city driving, but including some trips to communities 15 miles away, the gas mileage has been phenomenal. Upon filling the tank twice, after driving each time more than 700 miles locally, I achieved 94 mpg and 102 mpg.

2013 Plug in Prius

Really happy with the ride and esp with being able to drive electric. I drive 18-26 miles/day during the work week so I get the first 13-14 miles electric(will go down in winter) and then I use gas/hybrid technology. Trying to get my employer to install a charging station which would mean most days I can drive exclusively electric. Car is super smooth on the electric motor and loads of fun to drive in this mode. My first Prius a 2010(two) has 110k miles and never cost me a penny outside of regular maintenance. Replaced the rear brakes around 80k and the front brakes are still original! First Toyota owned and I must be a loyal owner since I bought another one! In 1000k since I bought the 2013 I have used about 11gals including several highway trips of 80miles +.

Better Value Than Regular Prius (After Incentives)

se_riously, 05/26/2014
2014 Toyota Prius Plug-in 4dr Hatchback (1.8L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)

Has all the Prius pro's and con's. Pro's include excellent packaging, fuel economy, and tech features and drivetrain. Con's include slow acceleration, cheap and easy to scratch interior parts, built to save weight which means less sound deadening. But Toyota is offering $4,000 rebate, 0% financing for 60 months, $0 down and no payments for 90 days, and $2,500 federal tax rebate, and $1,500 California rebate (for CA residents). So in the end, the car costs LESS than a comparably eqipped regular Prius 3. In other words, you get all the Prius 3 features + heated seats + no wheel caps + the possibility of carpool stickers in CA + plug in capability + higher resale value FOR LESS MONEY.

*Update 5/31/23- An amazing car! In electric mode, it’s still more efficient than all other EV’s out there. In Hybrid mode, well it’s the “Prius” of all vehicles with over 52mpg if you ever find that you need to use the engine. Combine that with impeccable reliability and safety, it’s the best decision you can make. I have now owned my car for 7 years and it has been the most reliable, most efficient I’ve ever had and it’s still the best decision on the road today. Consumer reports has consistently awarded the Prius at the top of the most reliable list over other vehicles for over a decade. I've watched as my used prius has outlasted 2 separate neighbors' teslas in my neighborhood...very funny but it demonstrates the incredible engineering put into the Prius. Original Post: I was looking at several electric or plug in vehicles to replace my '04 Prius (which lasted for 293,327 trouble free miles). I test drove many new models but because of my previous car's remarkable reliability and efficiency, I knew the only thing that could replace my Prius, would be another Prius. I found myself searching for my next car at a time after Toyota had discontinued the Prius Plug-in but before it had rolled out its new Prius Prime. I was getting ready to purchase a new 2016 Prius Eco when I came across an off lease company that had several used Prius Plug-ins for sale. I purchased a 2013. I quickly found out that these are amazing vehicles. I get the same impeccable reliability and efficiency that my other Prius delivered plus the added capability of having an electric vehicle for all of my in town trips. This plug-in version has a modified suspension system from the standard Prius. I found that it handles well and feels confident and firmly planted on the road. The seats are comfortable for long road trips and the spacious cargo area is exactly the same size as in the standard Prius despite the plug-in having a larger battery! These cars are designed for efficiency whether you are using it as an EV or a hybrid. In electric only mode, I've found that my Prius Plug-in is more efficient than many other electric only cars. Its battery size and weight does not seem to prohibit the efficiency of its electric only mode since it does not have to carry the excessive weight of a large battery like the ones found in a tesla or leaf. Not having to carry around that "dead weight" is also why I am getting 50+mpg using just the gas engine in hybrid mode. Most plug in vehicles seem to sacrifice the efficiency of their hybrid mode in an effort to carry a larger battery (example, the Chevy Volt with only 37-42 mpg). I've driven about 22,363 miles since I purchased my car a year and a half ago. I am averaging 4.68 miles per kilowatt-hour after travelling 14,122 miles in Electric mode only (compare this number to other electric only cars today and you may be impressed). I am averaging 51.83 mpg after traveling 8241 miles in hybrid mode only (this reflects mostly highway mileage). So go ahead and try to snag one of these gems from an off lease or any used car dealer. You will be happy you did!

Survived Side Impact Crash at 45MPH

L, 11/07/2017

Purchased 2012 Prius Plug In April 2015. I wanted everyone to know that my family and I were involved in a side impact crash this year by a 17 year old distracted driver. The crash occurred on a two lane road, and the other driver hit our drivers side from front driver to rear drivers side doors. The side impact air bags deployed as supposed to and no deaths. For a car I only wanted to purchase to drive around to save money, I thought that the thin metal of the doors would not protect very well, I was wrong! This vehicle has taken care of me and my family so well that I purchased another one (2014 Prius Plug In) a week after the crash when I was told my 2012 vehicle was totaled. So before you purchase your next vehicle, what is your family worth, do your home work read reviews and consider if an accident happens which vehicle should you really get!

As other published reviews have mentioned, you are trading MPH for MPG and I have found this to be accurate. You will get to where you need, but not very fast. I plug-in a few times a week at home and the free mall chargers. I average over 600 miles per tank. I think for me, this averages to about 3 charges per gallon since the gas mpg is about 48 or so and I'm averaging over 80mpg. Filling the tank is about $28 for about 8 gallons. The full 3 hour charge at home is about $1 based on $.33/kwh, so being the cheap guy that I am, I try to avoid plugging in at home :)

... and it takes only 8.3 gallons of regular gas to fill the tank. Moving from a 2004 highlander (I know, not a comparable vehicle), it already saved me 30 gallons of gas in just 15 days of ownership. Leased for $310 a month, it has already paid itself 40% of its monthly payment. Looks sub-compact from outside, but not bad on the space inside. Comfortably sits 4 adults . Feels heavy like an european import (loaded batteries under the trunk). So-so pickup from complete stop, (11 seconds for 0-60 mph), but for $200+/mth savings on the gas, I will take it. Please note: My office is only 9 miles each way and I've religiously charged every night for 15 days.MPG not guaranteed

I have a 4 mile work commute and often drive 15 miles to Portland on weekends, so my driving is a mix of city and some hwy. Late this summer I averaged 105 MPG across three fill ups. I have seen my milage down to 65 MPG city during the winter with lots of heater and defroster use. On an extended trip accross the state, I averaged 52 MPG hwy - just as advertised. I have two 2012 Prius Plug in's and have spent $1200 less on gasoline during the first year than we did owning two Corollas so the savings is very real. Our electricity bill has only gone up $15 per month charging 2 cars, though some savings is achieved there with our Solar panels. Figure about 25-30 cents to charge at PDX rates.

Great Car With One Drawback

Like my wife's Prius, this car does all you expect of it as far and mileage and price goes. My one, very major disappointment is in the on-board computer. When I bought a 'plug-in', I was under the impression that I would always get to use the approx. 11.5 miles of electric charge before the gas motor kicked in (unless, of course I accelerated rapidly). Instead, the motor often kicks in while I'm still rolling out the driveway and the electric stage comes on intermittently during driving. This means that I often drive 20 or 30 miles before using up my charge which to my thinking, makes the 'plug-in' aspect a waste of time and gas.

I bought this car used and it's the first time I've ever been in love with a car. I paid a little more for the advanced version because I really wanted power and the vegan version of leather seats, the bigger navigation screen, and the little projected info on my dash as I drive so my eyes don't leave the road.

Loving that OCD feeling while driving my new prius plug in

Just leased a 2012 plug in prius and am loving it. So much that i know am becoming obsessed on getting awesome gas mileage. Should state that i bought this car for the california carpool lane after getting a great 3 year lease deal. EV mode is so addicting. This allows you to run on electricity only for 15 miles. I am able to easily charge up in 3 hours at home using a regular 110v plug and then again at work(1.5 hours on a special 240 plug). Yesterday used another plug at a parking lot and unfortunately didnt fully connect it, thus no charge. had to convert to hybrid mode on the way home lowering my MPG. a few cons-no spare tire, its a prius, 5000 mile visits for maintenance. would buy!

Stick with the base Prius or go with a Leaf or Focus for EV

At first when I bought this car I was super excited about being able to run in all electric mode. Sadly this mode is a downer. It states you will get up to 15 miles (recently rerated to 11 miles). I don't know of any day that i receive more then 7 miles. If you live in the Northeast you will be lucky to even be able to use the EV mode in the winter months. I switch to a Focus EV which is all EV and although it does have problems with the cold weather it at least still can run in EV mode. With the Prius as soon as you turn on your AC or Heater you switch to the standard hybrid mode.

Bought it in 2012 and passed 12K already. 1. This car does save gas, especially, if you work provides you electricity. 2. The GPS interface and disabling most of the features while in motion pisses of, even passenger couldn't do anything. 3. Absence of the spare tire is a big minus, the "repair kit" is useless: unreliable and very expensive. I ended up buying a full size spare for the same price! 4. Firmware algorithm allows your engine run while warming up in electrical mode w/out it being connected to transmission or charging the battery - fuel waste. Summary - if you do not need a carpool sticker at CA then buy yourself something more driver friendly, or wait another 5 years.

Most reliable car you can buy. No problems except for navigation failure and cruise control failure covered by extended warranty. EPA estimate of 95 is a useless figure. By charging regularly I get 80 MPG with between 9 and 11 miles on a charge or 3.4 MPkillowatt. Car is very quiet but backup noise should be done away with for about $90. Cruise control should default to be on but you must actually turn it on before setting. This can be a safety hazard as when you think you set cruise and it is still off car will slow down unexpectantly. This is a design defect. My advice would be to make turning on cruise control when you start car a habit. Gas lid open is in a spot where it is easy to open accidently. Oil change only required every 10,000 miles with 5,000 maintenance intervals. Overall this is a great car. If you think you will save money on gas you are correct but the cost of electricity to charge does away with most of that savings. Car inside is bigger than it look outside. Brakes are great. And except as noted above no additional maintenance outside of maintenance schedule. Original tires only got 37,000 miles before they needed replacing.

With a super low lease price and electricity in our area under $.10 a kwh, this was a no-brainer! We live and work within 5 miles of just about everything we need, so the 12 mile range on all electric is perfect! We have an 8 yr old and a 2 yr old in a car seat, and they both fit fine in the back, even behind me at 6'2" Lots of space in the hatchback, and lots of nice features included in the base model. Have driven nearly 1,000 miles and the lifetime average is 55mpg (all electric miles included bumps up the mpg a bit).

Had the car 4 years and this is my second Prius under my ownership. I love the gas mileage of the car with combined 74 mpg (plug-in and gas), however, there are couple downsides of the car. 1) Approximately 12 miles of EV is outdated and not suitable for commuters that needs about 25 miles round trip. 2) Rattling noise that I have observed couple times but unable to fix by the dealer. 3) Not enough lumber support in long road trip.

It has been a great car. It gets great mileage. Is comfortable to drive. The driver's view is pretty bad. It is hard to tell where the corners are. Look around in a parking lot. Most Priuses of this style have beat up bumpers - there is a reason for that. The last annual state inspection cost a bundle (probably about half the value of the vehicle). New rotors, calipers, and pads all around. Some rusted brake lines. Leaking exhaust at some gasket. It all added up to well over $2k. But no other expenses and the year is half over. This mud season the plastic shield under the right front fender got separated and half of the shield on the left side tore off. The Prius does not have muddy road clearance. I can replace the plastic with aftermarket ones fairly cheaply. The dealer charges about five or six times the cost of DIY and it doesn't take much time or effort to replace them. But it will still cost about $100.

Great car. Lots of space when seats are down. Very comfortable. I put the two sided seat down in the back and then I sleep in the car. I enter and exit from the position of the single seat up. I also use that space to change clothes. BEWARE: If you touch the "touch screen" on the navigational system too hard (how hard can a finger push?" the screen will crack. It has happened to many. Toyota did NOTHING to help. Dealer estimate to fix....$13,000.00 to fix. You heard that correctly. Happened on year three of owning the car. No one was willing to help. Finally, 3 years later, I found a place to replace the screen for $500.00. Two years of not being able to use my expensive touch screen system.

Perfectly Boring for the long haul

2012 Toyota Prius Plug-in Advanced 4dr Hatchback (1.8L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)

A few aftermarket upgrades make the prius plugin advanced a longterm ownership go from a blessing to an even better blessing: subwoofer under passenger seat, sway bar/strut bar/midchassis brace, minor soundproofing, spare tire for long trips, loud horn, tinted windows. Best car!... Perfectly boring! Update July 2017: hit 84k miles recently. Car drives as smooth and trouble free as usual. Occasional glitch with Bluetooth from my phone. Either restarting phone or car, or combo of both resolves this. Got rear ended on Mother's Day- the Mazda3 that hit me had bad visible damage - the Prius headrest prevented worse injuries to my neck, my back is still going through rough times, the car sustained more internal body damage than ugly, external body damage. Car drove fine even after accident and is still in the body shop currently. Compared to my loaner, I really miss the Prius!!! Fast forward to July 2018. I’ve hit 110k miles and have since upgraded shocks to Koni FSD and increased soundproofing with strategically placed pieces of Dynamat. This car is a joy to drive and is a sleeper on the road. Can keep up and out corner the best of them. Paint is holding up with great shine, eco friendly seating material looks new and fresh, plastic on dash which is eco friendly also is easy to clean and looks like new. Partner just got a 2016 Camry SE Hybrid and loves it - feels like a higher quality hybrid, but I enjoy the modest feel of the Prius, still. Be realistic about what a car is for and this will become one of your favorites, too.

Drive 30 miles each way to work. Charge it over night and getting about 10 miles on electric for 1st part of trip even on cold morning. Over all mpg is about 65 mpg a day compared to old car which was 25 a day.

Love my PIP

My PIP is fun drive and gets amazing mileage. At this point I am averaging 90+ mpg. Turns out the 11-14 mile EV range works for me since most of my trips are less than 10 miles. I usually manage most round trips with a little (>1mile) of EV range left. Good value with current incentives!

I love my 2012 Prius Plug-in although it now only charges up to 11.3 miles when plugged in. Otherwise it’s been very low maintenance. It has great acceleration and I get excellent mileage. The one drawback is the catalytic converter was stolen and now I’m paranoid it could happen again.

this car is a workhorse. No issues for 140000 miles. I would have not sold the car if my company didn't have a company car.

Love My Plug In Prius

I've had my Plug In Prius since April '12. I now have about 6000 miles and average 123 mpg in combined driving (including a trip to Canada of 1000 miles when I could not plug in at all). My commute to work is ideal - 11 miles and I can plug in at work, so on many days I use little or no gas.

Steering wheel heavy, feel tired every time driving around 2-3 hours. Dealer Melody Toyota lied, didn't know anything even answer a question about this car. Battery Plug in is such, spend electric more than gas.
