Overview
For some drivers, cars are more than just devices that get them from point A to point B. They want a vehicle that is inspiring and challenging and gets their blood pumping. Sadly, that typically means shelling out a hefty sum of cash, but the 2026 Toyota GR86 proves otherwise. It's an affordable sport coupe that drives as well as it looks and is one of the few holdouts that still offers a manual transmission. This year, the limited-production Hakone Edition makes way for the bright yellow Yuzu Edition (named for the Japanese citrus fruit) with many of the same performance upgrades.
Edmunds spotlight: Don't let specs ruin the fun
These days, 228 horsepower may not look impressive on a spec sheet, but the GR86 is no slouch. It makes the most of all available power by reducing weight, tipping the scales at a mere 2,800 pounds or so. As any pro driver will attest, weight is the enemy of performance, and this bantamweight fights well above its class. Not only can everyday drivers have fun thanks to its approachable performance and predictability, it's also a great platform for fledgling racers to enhance their skills on a closed circuit.
Competitors to consider
Lightweight fun is synonymous with the Mazda MX-5 Miata. While the GR86 isn't a two-seat convertible, it does deliver similar excitement from behind the wheel and is far more practical. That also holds true for the GR86's separated-at-birth twin: the Subaru BRZ. If you're seeking more muscular performance, the Ford Mustang has been delivering power at a discount for over 60 years, though it will cost you more nowadays. Other notable budget-conscious choices include the Volkswagen Golf GTI and the Mazda 3's turbocharged variants.
