The Toyota Supra has always been associated with inline-six-cylinder engines. It's a big reason why Toyota partnered with BMW, the brand most known for its inline-sixes, to create this generation Supra in the first place. (The BMW Z4 is in many ways its convertible sibling.) For the 2025 Toyota GR Supra, you can only get it with the inline-six — the base four-cylinder is no more. Its disappearance probably proves that, like us, the buying public wasn't particularly interested in it. Since the four-cylinder was mainly a way to get into the Supra for less money, it's no surprise that its absence raises the base price of Toyota's sports car for 2025. The rest of the car remains unchanged.

How does the Toyota GR Supra drive? In Edmunds' testing, a GR Supra with the automatic transmission rocketed to 60 mph in a quick 4.2 seconds. The available manual transmission will slow you down a bit but will reward you with a more engaging driving experience.

There's plenty of grip when going around turns, and the overall feel of the car is playful and fun. That said, the Supra's lively handling needs respect, and the car can get unstable quickly. The brakes and sticky tires hauled our test Supra to a stop from 60 mph in just 105 feet. The GR Supra is something you can drive with little effort every day. But be aware that the car's short windows and long hood make it hard to see out of. The ride quality is firm, as you'd expect from a sports car, but big bumps feel more pronounced because you sit so close to the rear axle.

Toyota doesn't equip the GR Supra with many advanced driver aids. Some, such as adaptive cruise control, are optional and only available with the automatic transmission. When so equipped, it works effectively to maintain a consistent and tight gap between you and the car ahead.

Comfort

How comfortable is the Toyota GR Supra? The seats provide excellent support, but you might find them a bit confining if you have wider shoulders. The leather upholstery isn't perforated, so its breathability isn't great and longer drives can leave you feeling pretty hot. Ventilated seats are not available.

We wouldn't call this a quiet cabin since there's a fair amount of road and wind noise, but it's not unpleasantly loud either. It lets in the right amount of induction noise and exhaust burbles when you're driving in Sport mode. As for the climate control system, it's super easy to operate and adjust, but there's no obvious way to sync its two zones, which is odd.

Lastly, this is a low-slung sports car with large door sills. Simply put, getting in and out can be challenging in a confined space, but this is a compromise that sports car buyers are typically willing to make.

In-cabin tech

How’s the tech? The navigation system is pretty good at understanding natural language commands, and it locates specific points of interest without an address. It's easy to use the voice commands to set up your route. Our test GR Supra had the 12-speaker premium audio system. The audio quality is fine, but it lacks the fullness we'd expect for an upgrade system.

As for integration, there's only one USB port, and wireless device charging is standard on all models but the base 3.0 trim with the automatic transmission. Wireless Apple CarPlay is also standard, but you can't get any form of Android Auto.

Storage & cargo

How’s storage and cargo? Sports cars are usually compromised when it comes to cargo space, and the GR Supra is no exception. It has less trunk space (10.2 cubic feet) than the Porsche Cayman and the BMW M2. There is a cargo pass-through to the cabin that you can use when hauling longer items. But you'll have to rest those items on the rear-suspension tower brace.

The small-item storage space is even more deficient in the cabin. The cupholders are located where an armrest bin would typically be. And if you store drinks in them, they will interfere with operating the infotainment system controls. The wireless device charging pad is small, and plus-size phones won't really fit. The door pockets and glovebox are also small, so it's best to pack very light.

Is the Toyota GR Supra a good value? The GR Supra's cabin looks more BMW than Toyota, but it's still a pleasant space that delivers a luxury-level look and feel. The standard carbon-fiber trim is a nice touch, and it helps make the Supra seem a bit more special than your average coupe. We think the 3.0 Premium strikes the best balance in terms of price and standard equipment.

Price-wise, sports cars like the Mustang Dark Horse, Chevrolet Corvette and BMW M2, start where the GR Supra tops out. While they might offer a bit more performance, the Supra is a relative bargain in this segment.

Toyota's warranty coverage is a trade-off compared to competitors. There's less bumper-to-bumper coverage but better powertrain coverage. Two years of scheduled maintenance is also included.

How’s the fuel economy? Fuel efficiency is not an area we expected the GR Supra to shine in, but shine it does. We tested the model with the automatic transmission, which gets an EPA-estimated 26 mpg combined. In our testing, we observed an impressive 29 mpg on our real-world evaluation route. Like any sports car, if you drive the Supra with some enthusiasm, expect that number to drop to the low double digits.

The GR Supra mostly delivers on its promises. Sure, there is a lot of obvious BMW DNA here, but that doesn't make it any less fast or fun to drive. The Supra's appeal is undeniable for the price. It's properly quick and lively, yet it's also mostly comfortable enough to be your daily driver so long as you don't need to take much with you or spend a lot of time on bad roads.

It's almost everything you want in a sports car in 2025. A great engine, the option for a manual gearbox, a chassis with plenty of grip that will push you to be a better driver, and it's built well enough that it doesn't feel like it's going to rattle itself apart.

The big story is scarcity: there appears to be just 1 new 2025 GR Supra nationwide, so treat the new-car market as effectively sold out and pivot fast to used options.

The used market is your practical play here. There are only 3 used GR Supras listed nationally, and the lowest displayed dealer price for a used one starts around $50,000.

The No. 1 competitor to consider is the BMW Z4. If you like the GR Supra but wished it was a convertible, this is the closest you're going to get. If you like BMW DNA but would rather have something with a back seat, the BMW M240i and M2 use an updated version of the same platform used to create the Supra and Z4. They also have 3.0-liter inline-sixes. Outside the BMW world, the Porsche 718 Cayman is the big bogey — its price is hefty and most versions have four cylinders, but the handling and driver engagement are sublime. There's also the Nissan Z, which is similar to the GR Supra in concept and is a long-standing competitor, but it's a fair bit slower and its handling numbers at our test track were worse.

It would be inaccurate to call the GR Supra a BMW Z4 coupe with a Toyota badge. The two cars share the same BMW-derived platform, while the Supra's powertrain, technology and interior components are all BMW-sourced. Nevertheless, Toyota tuned the mechanical components so that the two cars feel different behind the wheel. The GR Supra is livelier, to put it simply, and even the six-speed manual transmission snicks through its gears with greater precision. If anything, the shared technology is the bigger issue: The infotainment system is not only less advanced and user-friendly than what you'll find in new Toyotas, but it's a previous-generation BMW system too. On the upside, the BMW-derived adaptive cruise control is more aggressive than a Toyota system.
