Edmunds' Expert Review

by Will Kaufman
Pros
- Power is plentiful from the massive V12 engine
- A silent cabin and smooth ride make for impressive comfort
- Impeccable interior materials and craftsmanship
- Ability to customize to your heart's content
Cons
- Trunk isn't as large as rivals
- Your friends will know you didn't get the expensive one
What's new
- There are no major changes to the Ghost for 2018
- Part of the first Ghost generation introduced for 2010
The Ghost may be the "entry-level" Rolls-Royce sedan, but prices still start right around the average cost of a house in the United States. For that you get all the luxury of the storied brand in a slightly more driver-friendly package than the bigger Phantom, along with the nearly endless options for personalization. All in a vehicle that benefits from the user-friendliness of its BMW 7 Series underpinnings.

Edmunds' Expert Rating
Which Ghost Series II does Edmunds recommend?
Who are we to tell you how to spend a small fortune? We'll just offer a few observations. First, the Starlight Headliner is not available in the EWB model. Second, paint color and interior trim options are essentially limitless, so if you're thinking about getting your Ghost in silver or gray, consider seeing a doctor to check if you were born without an imagination.

2018 Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II models
The 2018 Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II is a luxury sedan offered in standard-wheelbase Ghost and Ghost Extended Wheelbase versions. A turbocharged 6.6-liter V12 (563 horsepower, 605 lb-ft of torque) sends power to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.
To say the SWB Ghost comes well-equipped is an understatement. You get a panoramic sunroof, an air suspension and power-closing rear doors, along with full leather upholstery on seats, door and instrument panels, and center console. It also offers massaging front seats, Wi-Fi, and a 10.3-inch display with navigation.
The Ghost Extended Wheelbase adds almost 7 inches between front and rear wheels for more rear passenger space, and it further coddles rear passengers with massaging rear seats and upgraded infotainment features.
The only notable options package is the Black Badge, which enhances performance with special steering and suspension tuning and increases power output to 603 hp and 620 lb-ft of torque. It also adds blacked-out trim inside and out. Beyond that, Rolls-Royce will customize just about any element of your vehicle — you just have to ask. And pay.

2016 Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II 4dr Sedan (6.6L 12cyl Turbo 8A)
The car is smooth, quiet, and rides exceptionally well. The paint is stunning; the coachline is a treasure, and the interior is beyond belief in terms of how everything looks, feels, and works. Of course it is -- that's what Rolls-Royce is all about.
What I *didn't* expect was how satisfying this car is to drive. It offers stunning acceleration (especially if you floor it when … merging onto a highway). I expected the handling to be "ponderous"; what I got was "responsive".
It's big and it's heavy and there's no hiding that. But in its element -- high-speed highway driving -- it's exquisite. It comports itself well enough on back roads, too, making it an all-round delight. You won't confuse this with a Miata (I have one, so I know); think more like a big BMW sedan (like a Five Series).
I lucked out in that my car has the Dynamic Driving Package. Not sure how big a difference it makes, I just know that this car is surprisingly fun to drive in any situation.
The features and options just add to the enjoyment. The Bespoke Audio system merits special mention. From Mozart to Madonna, the sound is awesome. Solid bass and clear highs.
I've had the car for almost a week, and the reality is setting in about what this car is and does. And it's looking like the reality will be even better than the anticipation.
Updated: I've now had the car for about six months. I'm still finding new things to experience. RR doesn't do "Sport" mode, but the transmission stalk has a small button that says "Low". It adjusts the shift programming for more aggressive performance. I *think* it also locks out eighth gear. The times I've tried it, the acceleration is stunning. I continually find myself thinking "something this big shouldn't go this fast this quickly!"
Updated: I've now had the car for almost four years. It's still everything I've said before. And I can add that it's been perfect. Other than annual oil changes (which are eye-wateringly expensive), the car has needed no attention or repairs.
Updated: At the end of the lease, it went back to RR. I enjoyed every mile I drove and rode in the car. The extended warranty I bought turned out to be un-needed as the car was flawless. Other than routine service (oil changes) and seasonal tire swaps, there were no failures or problems on the car -- and it was eight years old by that time.
We have a limited number of reviews for the 2018 Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II, so we've included review for other years of the Ghost Series II since its last redesign.
