What is the iX?

BMW isn't late to the EV party — its first mass-produced electric vehicle, the i3, was introduced for the 2014 model year — but it did take a while for the automaker to produce a model capable of traveling long distances before recharging. That changed last year with the introduction of the iX SUV and its stablemate, the i4 sedan. Now, the iX family grows to incorporate the high-performance M60 variant, which gives the iX the power and acceleration necessary to take on the heavy hitter in the luxury EV crossover segment: the Tesla Model X.

What's under the iX's hood?

The entry-level iX xDrive50 produces 516 horsepower and 564 lb-ft of torque — roughly on par with the automaker's twin-turbo V8-powered 850i coupe. But because the iX tips the scales at nearly 5,700 pounds, it is estimated to return a respectable 0-60 mph time of 4.6 seconds.

The new iX M60 isn't much heavier than the standard model, but it is significantly more potent. By default, the dual-motor powertrain produces 532 horsepower and 749 lb-ft of torque. Select the launch control mode and output is boosted even higher, to a healthy 610 hp and 811 lb-ft. That's still less than the base Model X's 670 hp, but BMW says the M60 can accelerate from a standstill to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds — a couple ticks quicker than the Model X's estimated sprint time.

The elephant in the room is the Model X Plaid, which boasts just over 1,000 horsepower and a touted 0-60 mph time of 2.5 seconds. While we think this time is a hair optimistic, it's hard to imagine that the iX M60 will best a Model X Plaid in an all-out drag race.

Outside of the iX M60's straight-line credentials, the high-octane SUV will be equipped with the standard model's optional air suspension and adaptive dampers. This should ensure the iX stays stable while carving corners without sacrificing ride quality.

What else should I know about the iX?

The iX M60 will be able to keep up with a Model X, but the privilege won't come cheap. The standard xDrive50 starts just shy of $85,000, and in addition to the more powerful rear motor, the M60 comes with several features that are optional on the xDrive50. These include 21-inch wheels, the Premium package, Dynamic Handling package, Radiant Heating package, laser headlights, ventilated front seats and a 30-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system. When the iX M60 is released in June 2022, it will carry a price tag starting at $106,095, including destination charges.

Last year's iX was a great start in establishing BMW as a major player in the electric luxury SUV space. The 2023 BMW iX M60 gives this crossover the thrust necessary to stay competitive with the likes of the Tesla Model X.

Under the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) offers taxpayers a Used Clean Vehicle Tax Credit equal to 30% of the sale price up to a maximum credit of $4,000 for the purchase of a used plug-in electric or hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. Beginning January 1, 2024, Clean Vehicle Tax Credits may be initiated and approved at the point of sale at participating dealerships registered with the IRS. Dealers will be responsible for submitting Clean Vehicle Tax Credit information to the IRS. Buyers are advised to obtain a copy of an IRS "time of sale" report, confirming it was submitted successfully by the dealer. Not every version of the vehicle models will necessarily qualify. Please check with the dealer/seller to determine the eligibility of your specific vehicle.

For the vehicle to qualify:
- Price cannot exceed $25,000.
- Need to verify the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
- Must be at least two model years older than the current calendar year in which the vehicle was purchased.
- Must be sold through a dealership, private sales not permitted.
- Not have already been transferred after August 16, 2022, to a qualified buyer.
For individuals to qualify:
- Must meet income eligibility, depending on modified adjusted gross income (AGI) and tax filing status.
- Must not be the first owner of the qualifying vehicle.
- Has not been allowed a credit under this section for any sale during the 3-year period ending on the date of the sale of such vehicle.

Unbelievably fast and amazing sound system

This is my first electric car. Everything works as it says. The sound system is absolutely amazing. Range is very good. Small things that are odd. Front hood does not open for storage. Only can be opened by bmw. No home link on the mirror. Overall very happy with purchase. Can drive it very easily slowly around town. When you want acceleration it takes off with head snapping torque.

Being my first EV, I’m blown away by its efficiency, comfort, quietness, acceleration, and style. The polarizing exterior style grows on me, and interior just impressed me from my first test drive. When you are inside and enjoying this vehicles interior, it could look like a rolling 💩, and I don’t care, LOL. I’m seeing better than EPA mileage as most have, and charging has been a … breeze. Nice plus is BMW’s 2 years of free public charging at Electrify America. Basically, free fuel if the EA works for you. Home charging is a breeze too. There is a plethora of tech, which I like simple better, but it can be a set up and forget it too. If you have a iPad, you’re right at home. The climate controls are amazing, and winter comfort is better than any car I’ve driven in 44 years. Love the heated steering wheel, door panels and console that surround you in addition to immediate climate comfort. Enjoy the “Climatization” on phone app that preconditions (pre-heat or cool) with a simple touch before departing. There have been a few minor glitches with apps, but no big deal. Afterall, it is a rolling computer. Update after 14 months of use. This iX50 has done great in the winter snow. The preheating or cooling of the car before entering from a phone app is fantastic. Heats or cools in 5 minutes. Economy is great, getting a surprising 360 miles in summer.with a 100% charge, which I do only when traveling. Winter temps cut that by about 20%, depending on temps. Trouble free, best car I’ve ever owned. Update 6/24: This has been the best car I’ve owned, and that’s in the dozens of new cars. I’m doing a bit more traveling in SE USA mountains and charging is an issue. I traded for a 2025 BMW X5 50e PHEV. It gives me great round town zero gas for 45+ miles, and great fuel economy of 35-45 mpg on road so far. Very similar to iX. Update 1/25: The iX was the best car I’d owned. However, being a full EV, I found charging in the wild to sometimes be a hit and miss. By this I was finding that only using fast chargers in the wild, I’d encounter non functioning chargers or waits for a charger sometimes. It was frustrating to pull up to a bank of 6 chargers in use and 4 of them being finished, yet no one there to open it up. So you’re stuck waiting. Home charging was a breeze and provided 300+ miles of range but I’d still get range anxiety after 200-250 miles not knowing if a good charger would be available, even using charge station location apps. So I took the EV value hit and ordered a 2025 BMW X5 50e PHEV. The PHEV better fits my lifestyle, as I drive it 80-90% of the time in all electric, and then have the wonderful in line 6 twin turbo to carry on when traveling. Bottom line, iX is wonderful if charging away from home works for you. In SE USA, charging is not ready for EV life.

I have had this car since 6-22 and its amazing- the best care I have every driven. An EV with the space, refinement, function and luxury of a BMW SUV. My only gripes- no adaptive cruise and as soon as winter hit (In Raleigh NC). the battery range/ miles dropped significantly.
