Overview
BMW planted its flag in the all-electric SUV space last year with the iX. It's about the same size as the company's midsize X5 and stands out with its roomy seating and impressive power and range. Even the entry-level xDrive50 has two electric motors, all-wheel drive, 516 horsepower and more than 300 miles of range. For the 2023 iX, BMW has gone even further with the introduction of the new 610-hp M60 version.

Am I Ready for an EV?
EV ownership works best if you can charge (240V) at home or at work This typically means a 240V home installation, but you could also have a similar setup at your office or other places your car is already parked for several hours each day. Don't expect a regular household outlet (120V) to suffice unless you've got a plug-in hybrid, in which case overnight charging at home is feasible.
If you can’t charge at home, charging at a charging station could take at least 10x longer than at a gas station With public charging infrastructure still in its infancy, the user experience can be maddeningly inconsistent. Tesla owners tend to rave about the reliability and speed of the company's proprietary Supercharger stations, but rival DC fast options have thus far been plagued by technical issues and overcrowding. It's an evolving landscape and our best advice is to do your research on the available options for the EV you want to buy.
Adding a 240V home charging system could cost up to $1,000 or more If your existing electrical service can handle the additional demands of EV charging, you may be able to add Level 2 charging at home for less than a grand, including installation. But your costs will multiply if you need to upgrade your electrical panel or add a dedicated circuit.
While the BMW's exterior design is frankly a lot to take in, the interior is stunning with high-quality materials all around and several lively color combinations to choose from. The latest iteration of BMW's infotainment system called iDrive 8 is displayed on a 12.3-inch driver display and a 14.9-inch touchscreen. The iX is also available with a full suite of driving aids including adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance and a remote parking function. There's also an available feature that allows for hands-free driving at speeds up to 40 mph on the highway.
The BMW iX competes with a growing list of options including the Tesla Model X, Mercedes EQE SUV and Rivian R1S. Check out our Expert Rating below for our test team's full evaluation of the iX's comfort, technology real-world range and more.

Performance
9.0/10
How does the iX M60 drive? At our test track, the iX M60 accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds. That's just as quick as the last BMW X5 M we tested, and it's even more impressive considering the M60 weighs nearly 6,000 pounds. All that mass is going to need some good brakes and tires, and the M60 has them. Our test M60 came to a stop from 60 mph in a respectably short 115 feet.
The M60's M-tuned suspension takes things up a notch from the xDrive50. It feels a bit sharper and more willing to skirt around corners. Straight-line speed, thanks to the additional power, is certainly the M60's biggest differentiator. Otherwise, the M60 is just as easy to drive every day as the standard xDrive50. There's plenty of smooth regenerative braking for those who like the one-pedal driving experience.

Comfort
9.0/10
How comfortable is the iX M60? The iX has some of the coolest-looking upholstered seats on the market today, and thankfully they're also very comfortable to sit in. The front seats offer a generous range of adjustments and have effective seat heaters and ventilation. There's even an optional front seat massage function that can be activated via BMW's voice controls.
You might assume that the M60 sacrifices ride comfort for performance, similar to how the X5 M and X6 M have in the past. While there's a hint of sporty firmness, the air suspension handled bumps and undulations with surprising compliance despite our test car's larger 22-inch wheels. Did we mention the M60 is also quiet? If you want, you can bathe in a cabin of synthesized acceleration noise (which you can turn off), but otherwise, wind and road noise is minimal.
Much of the iX's interior controls are touchscreen-based, and that includes those for the climate system. At least the primary temp settings are easy to access and make adjustments to. Rear passengers get two climate zones as well, plus a range of vents for excellent coverage. Overall, the system does an excellent job of maintaining a comfortable cabin.

Interior
8.5/10
How’s the interior? This interior — wow! Not only is the iX interior gorgeous to look at, it's highly functional too. It's easy to get in and out thanks to large door openings and low stepovers. Passenger space is generous once you're inside, with a flat floor throughout the cabin, ample headroom and legroom in both rows, and great shoulder room. Visibility is excellent, especially out of the front windows, and the available cameras can handle anything you can't easily see naturally.
There are a few downsides. Most of the iX's controls are touchscreen-based, and wading through layers of menus can be time-consuming and distracting. We also discovered that the white-lettering touch controls on our test vehicle's optional walnut center panel washed out in sunlight, which made it hard to see where the buttons are.

Technology
9.0/10
How’s the tech? The iX showcases some of the latest BMW innovations, and they're pretty impressive. BMW's suite of advanced driver aids can be hit-or-miss in how they perform, but they're a hit here. BMW's optional Highway Assist Plus even allows for some hands-free operation at low speeds when conditions permit. The infotainment system takes a while to learn, but overall we're impressed with the operation of the iX's tech. BMW's voice-activated virtual assistant is also a cut above most voice control systems in how it responds and its ability to change things like the climate control settings.
BMW pushes the envelope even more with its Android smartphone integration. Android users can quick-pair their phones to the car, and navigation directions show up as turn-by-turn directions in the driver's gauge cluster. Our test car also had the optional Bowers & Wilkins audio system. We found it pretty impressive, and it had a few party tricks up its sleeve like 4D bass, which essentially vibrates your seat in concert with the music for a more immersive experience (though it can be disabled). Why just listen to podcasts when you can feel them?

Storage
8.5/10
How’s the storage? There's 35.5 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats, which is much more than what the Audi e-tron offers but not quite as much as the Tesla Model X. The rear seats can split and fold flat in three sections and have convenient release buttons at the rear hatch. But there is no front trunk like on the Model X. Interior storage for small items is also a bit lacking. The door pockets and center armrest bin will be your best options.
The iX accommodates child safety seats with ease thanks to copious rear seat space and easy-to-access anchor points. But you might be disappointed in the iX if you want to tow; BMW does not rate the iX for towing.

Range and Efficiency
8.0/10
How economical is the iX M60? The iX M60 has an EPA-estimated range of 274 miles when equipped with the optional 22-inch wheels like our test car had (or 288 miles with the standard 21-inch wheels). Impressively, we easily exceeded the EPA's estimate on our standardized real-world EV range test route, making it 325 miles on a single charge. The iX xDrive50 we tested on the same route went 377 miles.
Efficiency, or how much electricity the iX uses when driving, is also pretty good. We measured 37.4 kWh used for every 100 miles of driving. That's identical efficiency to the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT Performance we tested (yet the M60 weighs nearly 1,000 pounds more and is quicker than the Ford) and more efficient than any Audi e-tron we tested.
The iX comes with an 11-kW onboard charger. BMW estimates it can charge from zero to full in a little over 10 hours on a Level 2 home charger (assuming you've got the right hardware and under optimal conditions). It also has DC fast-charging capability up to 195 kW, which can recharge the battery from 10% to 80% capacity in about 40 minutes.

Value
8.0/10
Is the iX M60 a good value? Considering all you get in the iX M60, BMW's asking price seems reasonable. Tesla's Model X and Mercedes-Benz's EQS SUV cost thousands more when comparably equipped. Build quality is very solid. Everything in the interior looks great, carries a bit of heft and is tightly screwed together. This is easily one of the better modern luxury interiors we've seen.
BMW's warranty is comparable with coverage of most luxury brands. Basic coverage lasts for four years/50,000 miles, with generous rust-through coverage of 12 years/unlimited miles and a battery warranty of eight years/100,000 miles. BMW provides complimentary maintenance for three years/36,000 miles, which is a plus, and two years of free fast charging (30-minute sessions at a time) on Electrify America's charging network.

Wildcard
8.5/10
Few of us like the iX's exterior styling, but that's just our subjective take. Otherwise, this is a modern EV that's versatile and enjoyable to drive. Did we mention it has a hexagonal steering wheel? Endless conversation starters here.
Which iX does Edmunds recommend?
We recommend the iX xDrive50 because it offers impressive performance and has better overall range for less money than the new M60. The optional Convenience package is also worth getting for its Harman Kardon sound system, augmented reality navigation and surround-view camera.
BMW iX models
For its second model year, BMW adds the M60 trim to the iX lineup, joining the xDrive50. Both versions of the iX have all-wheel drive with two electric motors. The xDrive50 is good for 516 horsepower, while the new M60 puts out a ground-stomping 610 hp. Every iX comes with a 106.3-kWh battery pack, with EPA-estimated range of up to 324 miles in the xDrive50 and up to 288 miles in the M60. (See our Expert Rating for details on our real-world range tests.) Keep reading for our editors' curated breakdown of the 2023 iX's standard and optional feature highlights.

Driver’s Comments
- Acceleration:
- Unlike the standard iX xDrive50, this M-ified version has launch control. With Sport mode selected, doing the powerbraking overlap makes the iX M60 vibrate as if it's a rocket ship. It adds some theater to what is otherwise a pretty calm experience. Acceleration is rapid to say the least. Not "OMG" quick but also unnecessarily quicker than a midsize SUV ever needs to be. This is pretty spot-on with an X5 M (U-Drags matchup, anyone?) both to 60 mph and at the quarter mile, but the iX is infinitely more comfortable and less aggro than that gas-burning beast.
- Braking:
- Same brakes, same tires, so (spoiler alert) same stopping distances from 60 mph. At 115 feet, it's a respectable number for this heavyweight. Just like the iX xDrive50, the braking is solid here. The pedal is brake-by-wire, so it removes the sensations of antilock braking from your foot, but you can still hear the system working in the background. The pedal stroke is relatively short but still natural-feeling for the most part. The iX M60 doesn't even flinch at these speeds. Everything is super stable and uneventful. The steering wheel vibrations are barely there, and the iX tracks straight without any steering wheel guidance. Nosedive is very mild too.
- Handling:
- Same 22-inch tires here, but the iX M60's M-tuned suspension manages to extract just a bit more cornering performance out of them than the xDrive50. The steering feels appropriately weighty in the Sport mode too, whereas we found it a bit light in the xDrive50. This big Bimmer moves shockingly well for its size, and when driving in Sport mode, we feel like there's a little more allowance for spirited driving. Max torque is still limited unless your wheels are pointed straight ahead, but there's enough to squirt out of turns with ample speed. Is the M60 as crazy as the X5 M? Not quite. But it also doesn't punish you on bad road surfaces like the X5 does. We'll take this over that any day of the week.

[MUSIC PLAYING] LAUREN MCCAY: What's up? I'm Lauren McCay. And this is our list of the top 10 best EVs with the longest range. No need for battery stress with these cars. They are the best of the best models we've tested to date.
The EPA comes up with their estimate for miles you'll get per gallon, or MPG. The same is done for electric vehicles, just a smidge different.
And then there's the Edmunds way of getting range numbers. To understand our list, you must first understand our process.
The EPA has standards they hold each manufacturer to. Those manufacturers then run their own tests to get an estimated range, which are based on miles that a vehicle can travel through the city and highway, splitting the time between both before needing to be recharged. To get at that, the EV is fully charged, parked overnight, and then driven the next day on a dynamometer.
To simplify, it's a treadmill for cars like those neat simulation rides. Basically, in the hands of these manufacturers, these cars live a lab rat's life.
Here at Edmunds, we're all about that real-world experience-- go ahead, little car, spread your wings-- testing a car's range the way a real person would by actually driving it on the road. We start with a full battery, and drive the car on the actual road, mixing in both highway and city streets, until the battery reads zero miles of range. The kilowatt hours used from charging are calculated with the miles traveled, and boom, our scientific method for a real-world range number. That was a long-winded way to say, we don't mess around with our rankings. It's rigorous, time-consuming, and it's a science. Also, we can bring you what's most applicable.
OK, that said, let's see who kicks us off at number 10.
[MUSIC PLAYING]
At number 10, it's the 2022 Rivian R1T Launch Edition, unique in that it's the first from the startup company's fleet, as well as it's the only electric truck made quite like this. In our testing, it beat out the EPA's estimate by three miles, with 317 miles total before needing to charge. It was tested with the standard battery, which is the biggest battery pack in this top 10 list.
Why we're so impressed, because it's a big old truck weighing more than 7,000 pounds, with four electric motors that'll make even diesel trucks cry with their torque. [GASP]
Even with horrendous efficiency, it makes our top 10 by brute force. For their very first EV truck, this automaker has proven they're one to beat in this space hands down.
[MUSIC PLAYING]
In at number nine is the Tesla Model Y Long Range, Elon Musk's way of making a car feel less like a car and more like a spaceship. The Y debuted for 2020 as a pioneer of the all-electric small SUV class. To its credit, Tesla has figured out how to generate plenty of social media buzz over cars that in the grand scheme of things few people buy.
That said, we couldn't turn a blind eye to the Model Y's range, as it has one of the smallest batteries on our list yet still delivers. In our testing, it's tied with the Rivian at 317 miles, which is pretty solid. That's a bit under Tesla's Model 3, which, spoiler alert, is on our list, but I'll get to that later.
[MUSIC PLAYING]
Sitting at number eight is the 2022 Kia EV6 Wind. It's a small crossover hatchback that is the first in Kia's lineup to be built from the ground up as an electric vehicle. Given that EVs are usually heavier than gas cars because of those batteries, the Wind is considered a bit of a lightweight, not the kind that can't handle its mimosas at brunch--
[GLASSES CLINKING]
--but the one that won't weigh down the driving experience.
And its 19-range friendly wheels add a nice cherry on top. We tested it the Edmunds way, squeezing every bit of battery energy out like a lemon for lemonade. Just one more drop. [GRUNT] And we got 323 miles out of it, beating the EPA's estimate by 13 miles.
[MUSIC PLAYING]
Next on our list at number seven is the Porsche Taycan 4S with Performance Battery Plus. When Porsche first revealed they'd be making an all-electric sports car, we were a bit leery. But after driving this Taycan, we can officially say we're fans. Porsche knocked it out of the park. [CRACK OF THE BAT] And the crowd goes wild.
The Taycan provides the performance, style, and precision that you'd expect from the marquee, and its range matches its quality, outperforming the EPA's estimate by a whopping 120 miles. To get those numbers, we ran in it on more range-friendly settings in the real world, and we were shocked.

Number six, it's the 2021 Mustang Mach-E, more specifically the California Route 1 with extended range battery. The Mach-E is the first Ford to be designed specifically as an electric vehicle. And an electric horse sounds pretty cool to me.
There will be no gas-powered version or even a hybrid. We've tested a bunch of Mach-E trims, and they all beat the EPA's range by as much as almost 15%. And this one is no exception. How far exactly? 344 miles, and beating the EPA's estimated range by 39 miles.

Halfway through our list at number five is the 2021 Tesla Model S Plaid, the second Tesla making our countdown. The Plaid, which gets its name from an obscure Spaceballs movie reference-- Lone Starr, I am your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate. Love that movie. The Schwartz!
Anyway, it has one more electric motor than the other trims for a total of three. This thing has 1,020 horsepower and can do zeo to 60 in just two seconds. But while that's impressive, the Plaid actually underperformed the EPA's estimate in our testing. But it's on our list because it's relatively lightweight for a luxury performance EV, and you can still get 345 miles more range than most.

While we're on Tesla, the Model 3 Long Range takes the spot for number four. Yes, it's a Tesla still. And yes, I probably can come up with the same lame jokes that I just said. But there's significant differences we think set it apart enough to do its own thing on our countdown.
First, it's just like the Model Y, but it's smaller and more lightweight, so it gets better range. Actually, it's lighter than our top three by about 1,000 pounds. But, of course, I'm not going to reveal that now.
In our testing, we were able to squeeze out 345 miles. That's just a little less than the EPA estimate. But don't feel bad, Tesla fans.
And now we've hit the top three. And if you weren't impressed before, be ready to have your socks knocked off.

If you wanted to take a trip from LA to, say, like Phoenix, Arizona, you'd be able to do that with the BMW iX xDrive50. It's been quite a while since we've gotten an all-new fully electric BMW. But the wait has definitely been worth it. Sporting two electric motors, one at each axle, the xDrive50 has a thumping 516 horsepower and can do zero to 60 in just four seconds.
But that's its sexy flex. It's number three on our list because it can deliver 377 miles. Remember, LA to Arizona. . It outperformed the EPA's range test by 62 miles, and that was on 22-inch wheels. Probably could have gotten even more rolling on [INAUDIBLE].
OK, I know what you're thinking. How could we have this list and not include a Mercedes? All right. I'm projecting. You probably weren't thinking that. But I did just give up the number two spot. It's the Mercedes-Benz EQS 450+. The EQS is the first all- electric car from Mercedes. It's the equivalent to the gas-powered S-class sedan, which has set the luxury standard for decades. Like the S-class, the EQS features all of Mercedes latest luxury features, in-car tech and advanced driver aids.
But wait, there's more. It overpowered the EPA's range by 20%, able to give you 422 miles. Want to go to Napa Valley? Wine not. You could do that with this EQS and charge up while you sleep off those well-fermented grapes.
And before we move on to the number one pick, I just want to give an honorable mention to another Benz, the 580 4Matic, able to deliver 381 miles.

It doesn't get any more exciting than this in the EV world, showing off American automotive innovation and doing a freaking stellar great job at it.
It's the 2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition. Some might say it was created from a copycat company of Tesla-- not the mail guy, but the big chief, who also oversaw the engineering of the Model S. Got tired of Elon knocking his ideas and developed his own.
The Lucid Air has a massive battery capacity, the equivalent of about three standard Nissan Leaf battery packs. Second largest next to the Rivian. The Air is compatible with the super speedy fast charging stations. Hooking it up to one of those allows it to potentially regain up to 300 miles of range after just 20 minutes of charging. Now that's quick. Its consumption is shockingly good, too, considering it can make 900 horsepower.
Though it came in about 5% less than what the EPA estimated, it's our winner, because out of all the EVs, it can still bust out a whopping 505 miles without charging, which could get you from about halfway from LA to Seattle, where running out of energy is never an issue there. It's clear, we would have completely missed the mark if we slept on the range this dream can give.

Well, there you have it, our best of the best in the EV world when it comes to getting out on the open road and not worrying about how much charge you have left. Sure, some may be bank breakers, but at least now you have standards. Like dating, you'll get anything if you're not particular about at least some things.
