Pros
- Stout towing and hauling capabilities
- Roomy cab fitted with the latest tech
- Trailer towing technologies to make hauling loads easier
- Useful MultiPro tailgate, bed steps and box lighting
Cons
- Many cabin pieces are obviously sourced from the less expensive Silverado
- Broad hood inhibits forward visibility
- Can't quite match best-in-class towing and payload ratings
What's new
- The Sierra 3500HD carries over with no significant changes
- Part of the fourth Sierra 3500HD generation introduced for 2020
Overview
Shopping for a heavy-duty pickup usually comes down to one metric: towing capability. And the 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD is about as capable as they come. It can pull up to 35,000 pounds and haul more than 5,000 pounds of payload. You'd have to search hard to find a load that would outmatch this heavyweight. Only a few trucks offer the same performance and capabilities as the Sierra 3500HD, and a couple of them — the Ram 3500 and Ford F-350 Super Duty particularly — have an edge on the GMC thanks to roomy and more comfortable cabins with slightly nicer interiors.
Cost to DriveCost to drive estimates for the 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Pro 2dr Regular Cab LB (6.6L 8cyl 6A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of N/A undefined in Ohio.

Avg. Large Truck
That's saying something, as the Sierra once held the distinction of being the most handsome and best-dressed in this category. And certainly in its Denali trim, the Sierra still impresses as a truck equally at home in the valet line or the oil fields. The mechanically identical Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD offers nearly all the same features in a slightly plainer — and cheaper — truck-ish package. It's a viable option if capability and affordability are priorities over style. Ultimately, the Sierra 3500HD easily satisfies if you're looking for a rugged, dashing and massively capable pickup.
Which Sierra 3500HD does Edmunds recommend?
Given the Sierra 3500HD's multiple trims and configurations, it's difficult to pick a single model. Overall, the SLT probably offers the best of all worlds, with a good mix of standard features and available options, yet without the AT4's added off-road hardware or the Denali's additional expense. And the SLT is only available in crew-cab configuration.
2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD models
The GMC Sierra 3500HD is a heavy-duty full-size pickup truck available in five trim levels: Pro, SLE, SLT, AT4 and Denali. The Pro and SLE are offered in regular-cab, extended-cab (double) and crew-cab configurations, while SLT, AT4 and Denali models are crew cab only.
The Sierra 3500HD is available with a choice of a 6.6-liter gasoline V8 (401 horsepower, 464 lb-ft of torque) paired with a six-speed automatic transmission or a 6.6-liter turbocharged diesel V8 (445 hp, 910 lb-ft) with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
Pro, SLE and SLT trims come standard with rear-wheel drive and optional four-wheel drive. The AT4 and Denali offer four-wheel drive exclusively. A dual rear-wheel option is available on certain cab and bed configurations of the Sierra to boost the truck's towing capacity.

- Vinyl seats and floor coverings

- Front underseat storage
- Cruise control
- Power door locks and windows
- Remote keyless entry
- 4.2-inch color driver information display
- Satellite radio

- Remote engine start
- Dual-zone automatic climate control

- Standard four-wheel drive
- Hill descent control
- Off-road suspension tuning
- Underbody skid plates
- Body-color bumpers
- Spray-in bedliner
- Front bucket seats with center console
- Ventilated front seats
- Heated rear outboard seats
Denali

- Power-sliding rear window
- Side steps to ease cab entry and exit
- Premium leather seats
- Upgraded driver information display
- Navigation system
- Bose premium sound system

The Denali also includes a number of safety features and driver aids, many of which are optional on other trims.
- Forward collision mitigation (warns you of an impending collision and applies the brakes in certain scenarios)
- Lane departure warning (alerts you if the vehicle begins to drift out of its lane)
- Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning (alerts you if a vehicle is in your blind spot during a lane change or while reversing)
- Surround-view camera system (gives you a top-down view of the Sierra 3500HD and its surroundings for tight parking situations)
- Parking sensors (alert you to obstacles that may not be visible in front of or behind the vehicle when parking)
- Safety alert seat (warns of potential side collisions with vibrating pulses on either or both sides of seat to indicate direction of danger)
There are more than 30 option packages and around two dozen stand-alone options available for the various trims. Mostly they add features to the lower trims that are standard on the higher trims.

WHAT A TRUCK
Bill S., 04/06/2020
2020 GMC Sierra 3500HD Denali 4dr Crew Cab 4WD SB (6.6L 8cyl 6A)
I purchased this Denali two weeks ago. I absolutely love this truck. The ride is so smooth and power band is incredible. What a huge difference between my 2008 GMC 2500HD Duramax, its like night and day... I love all the high tech features with the 2020's from the cameras to the front and rear LED lighting. Oh yea forgot about that first of its kind tailgate. Now that's a very … useful tailgate, I can see Ford, Dodge and Chevrolet using the same basic tailgate in the near future.
I really cant wait to haul my 5th wheel with this truck. Once I make that first trip I will update this review regarding the towing...
A big thank you for Thompsons GMC in Placerville, CA for such a great purchasing experience.
It’s been about a year since I purchased my GMC 3500 Denali and wanted to update my review.
I still love this truck so much. I’ve towed my 5th wheel RV approximately 8000K miles. This truck tows my 5th wheel like a dream. The cooling system is definitely a 100% improvement over my 2008 while towing in the warmer weather.
About the only thing I’d like to see is GM add more information to the heads up display (HUD) like your blind spot indicators.
I’m glad we bought when we did because I hear that dealers are having a tough time receiving new trucks.
Bottom line is this, I’d buy this truck all over again absolutely No Regrets!!!!

2020 GMC Sierra 3500HD Denali 4dr Crew Cab 4WD SB (6.6L 8cyl 6A)
In my 3rd year of owning the new 2020 GMC 3500 HD Denali after replacing my 2012 F250. Choose the GMC because I did not care for the new Ford styling. I still can not believe this is a HD 3500. While commuting around town, I think I am in my wife's German SUV because the ride and amenities are excellent. Visibility and Camera system are great and the interior seats comfortable and … supportive. When I hooked up the 3x axle boat and set out to the lake I was amazed at the poise and power. It made towing enjoyable! I really like my F250, but this truck is awesome.

2020 GMC Sierra 3500HD Denali 4dr Crew Cab 4WD LB DRW (6.6L 8cyl 6A)
After waiting for several months and production delays I was finally able to get my hands on a 2020 3500 Denali DRW and I have to say that this truck was well worth the wait. It drives smoother than any truck I've ever owned and the safety features are incredible. I have absolutely no complaints and with it being a Denali there really isn't any more stuff I will need to add. (other than … a fifth wheel hitch) I love the 10 speed transmission and the 6.6 diesel has more than enough HP and torque.
GMC hit it out of the park!

Trailer issues
Mario, 09/13/2021
2020 GMC Sierra 3500HD Denali 4dr Crew Cab 4WD LB DRW (6.6L 8cyl 6A)
Extremely disappointed with my 2020 Denali 3500hd. I own 6 trailers and only 1 works with the "new" trailer integration system. I get trailer not connected display, brake lockup on connecting, flickering lights. Trailers work perfect on other rigs. GM dealership basically said to pound sand and update my trailers to work with their system.
