Between my father and I, this would be the fourth Explorer in the family and they have never failed us. But we do the maintenance! The transmission failure is due to contaminated fluid plugging up the ECT and the transmission does not need to be replaced for the shift flair! Do your research. I broke my back and find this vehicle comfortable for long trips and am pleased with the 19 mpg average. The quality of the interior is first rate and conveniently laid out. The ride is a little stiff but is quiet and poor weather driving is excellent. The HVAC cools and heats the interior well, but can be slow to warm on cold days. If you do the maintenance, yours should run well as well.

Ford should do a recall on this SUV. The door handles fail. I have to use a rope from opening the back window while pulling the rope which is latched on the inside door handle. I have to pull the rope to get in the front door. All door handles are broken off. The seat controls don't adjust properly. And now I hear a suspension noise which I can not pinpoint where it is coming from. I first thought it was the shocks, but after the replacement, it still sounds like a bed frame seeking when going over a speed bump and turning right or left. *******~UPDATE~******** I have no complaints. I found out the suspension bushings was the problem while talking about how it sounded like a bed frame. Anyways, This SUV is my only means of trans. I built a 5x10 utility trailer to do business hauling unwanted material to the dump. This Ford explorer holds up as long as I take care of it. I place 4 brans new tires on it. I modified the interior so I can haul tools. Its now has a mileage of 200350 miles on the speedometer. I redid the exghost pipes taking off the 4 catti converters sent them to echo cast got paid top dollar for them. Installed a new catti but can't get the engine nose now. its ok. This ford suv is still running hard and strong. But just a little less horse power.

After 2 years 50000 miles, towing a 3500 lb boat every weekend and moving dogs and kids, this truck has been great. The only repair has been a computer idle switch. Gas miliage around the city is 13 while highway is 20 mpg. I'm 6'1" and this truck has plenty of room and comfortable thanks to the power seats.
