Great Dependable Coupe
I purchased the vehicle with 53K on it as a second well handling economy car. It now has 276K with the original interior, paint, engine, transmission and clutch. I have replaces only minor items such as wheel bearings, half shafts, timing belt, plugs and wires and the radiator. There is a VW following for thus vehicle as it, with a few minor modifications, out handles and out performs many others in the class and the next higher.
My 1990 VW Fox
I purchased my 1990 VW Fox after college. And I still own it. I have put more than 440,000 + miles on it. Just regular maintance and wear and tear parts (ie...brakes, tires, spark plugs, etc.) No major engine work or transmission work. I am now just starting to overhaul the engine due to low oil pressure. I never had any oil leaks other than once around 225,000 miles the valve cover started leaking. Replace it and was back on the road again. Although parts are getting hard to fine. I have driven this car everywhere, dirt roads, highways, up in the TX, NM, Co. mountains and forest, NM, Az, Tx desert, snow, rain and down on the beach in Tx. Runs like a champ.
reliability
my fox was given to me by my mom and dad. this fox has run thru thick and thin and still it keeps on ticking !!!!!!!!!!!!
Red Riding Hood
Great pick up through the low gears. Can really move for 80 hp. Bought it at 185k and since then have only had to replace the timing belt and the muffler (I like to push the gears) Steer clear of large bumps and holes if you intend on keeping it around, suspension isn't the strongest but can get the job done.
Best Small Car!
I actually had 2 Vw Fox's an 87 and a 93 .I totalled both but came out alive,is was one great little car, it handled great, while every one were buyin sentras and corolla's I bought a Vw Fox, and it was a great car, with only 81hp it still was very dependable and If they would have continued makin the car I would have kept purchasing one .
Still One of the Best
My 1993 Fox was indeed my first car and a good one at that. Although what she may have lacked in beauty (she was a little rough around the edges), she made up for in character. Of course everyone is going to be in love with their first car, and for me, there was no question about it. The car was surprisingly safe as well, as it was taken away from me in a 45 MPH head-on collision with a young woman in a Cavalier. I still miss my Fox every day when I drive to school or work, as my Jetta simply cannot fill the void left by that car. It was certainly not a Honda Civic, but it was something that no-one else had. If you have one, hold on to it, as they are very special cars indeed.
12 years old and just like it was new
My Volkswagen Fox has had NO mechanical problems despite numerous things that happened such as wasps building their nest on the engine block! It still purrs like a kitten and handles like a dream.
got a lemon
My grandparents bought me a car b/c my parents needed to take back a car they had given me and I got a Fox. This car has to be repaired often and is unreliable.
featureless but fun
My parents got this car brand new back in 1990, and in 2003, they started to hand it over to me. At first, I was quite mad at what a piece of crap it seemed to be at its old age. Once I had driven it for about 3 months, I was to the point where I would prefer it over a newer US Big 3 economy car. The Fox would outlast and outhandle any old US economy car. I can't believe that it's been so dependable with regular maintenance. It has been and will continue to be a great first car and a great ride for my high school days. It just won't quit running, the wonderful little thing. This car has given me a great loyalty to VW I would happily get another one.
Words can't describe this great car!
This is a fantastic car in any situation. Its small exterior dimensions and outstanding fuel economy make this a great city car. Agile handling and a spunky character make it a great backroad car. This solid German car is comfortable in any situation. Come rain, snow, or ice, the Fox can't be stopped. A roomy interior makes the Fox a comfortable car even for 6-foot-plus people like me. The driving experience is go-kart fun. And reliability? This car practically invented that word. The Fox was based on the Audi 4000, and it shows in the incredible build quality. I would reccommend it to anyone who is interested in a good car.
The most mechanically sound car I've had
Minor electrical problems invariably arise in these older VWs (noises and lights going off for no reason), but at around 150,000 miles, the engine uses no oil and runs the cleanest of any car I've ever seen. After 2,000 miles, the dipstick is still clean. A friend of mine bought a Fox whose odometer was broken at 250,000+ miles, and he drove it for five years that way until the trans eventually started making ugly noises.
New Beetle
This was my first new car. At the time it was the cheapest economy car. Most of my friends drove Hondas and Toyotas and I wanted to be different. I initially wanted the two door wagon but got the Coupe instead because I couldn't drive a five speed. I love the way it drove. It was so easy to steer around and it's so light the 80 HP engine was enough. It was so easy to maintain and nothing broke down. The interior wasn't fussy and simple but that was perfect for me. The only regret I had was I didn't buy the option of air conditioning. I learned to live it without it but sometimes very had on Southern California climate. I miss it a lot and I wish I didn't lose the car when another driver trying to beat a yellow hit my car. I don't remember if it had air bag but it didn't go off.

great little ride
this car is the most reliable car i have ever driven. mine has 160k miles, and it still runs as good as it did when we first got. this car is the perfect back-up car. in the 120k miles we have put on the car, it has only two major problem, the paint faded, adn started to chip, and the radiator "broke". other the regular maintance, no other cost well worth every penny.
1991 Volkswagen Fox
Haven't had it too long, bought with 165k, but so far has been very reliable, used it to cross the rockies, go off-roading, still got 35 mpg, has many nice features, and interior may not be as nice looking as japanese cars, but has held up MUCH better =-)
Good Student Car
Good car, treated me well. Keep up on regular maintenance and all will be fine. With the automatic safety belts, car won't start unless safty belt is plugged in, safety feature. Good price for reliable transportation, 125k and still runs like a champ.
Fox - Many years later
Very reliable car, it handles well and when it gets to the gas it will save you some cash.
cheap and fun
It was the first I owned and one of the most care free cars I've driven. It wasn't exciting like a high performance car but it was cheap to own and operate and virtually nothing bad could happen to it. It was a perfect student vehicle. Too bad VW stopped making this frugal sedan.
My Fox
I love this car! I bought it from my brother who loved it and worked on it allot. I have yet to find something that my fox couldn't do. I pulled out a tree stump with it!! I can climb with it! I raced a 1994 civic with a turbo and won!
the best
its just great no one should gi with out having one of these cars there great
We love our car.
We have had this car for 7 years and we love it. Volkswagen rocks!
Go buy a Fox!
I have a red 1993 Fox Wolfsburg (4drs). It drives very smoothly on the highway and it's also very peppy. The gas mileage is excellent. Parts aren't too expensive and it's a solid car. I would suggest it to anyone with or without a tight budget that wants a great, reliable car.
Best $500 I ever spent!
My first car was a 1989 VW Fox and I couldn't have been happier with it. I bought the 1993 model that I have now because I absoutely loved the Fox. It is one of the best used cars that money can buy. It gets awesome gas milage and can't be beat for reliability. It isn't a "plush" car by any means but, if you are looking for reliable transportation, this is where it's at.
Great little Fox!
The VW Fox is a great car. Its built sturdy and will last a while. Mine has over 160,000 miles and still going strong. There are of course the minor problems that occur, but those are common with older vehicles. I highly recommend this car to anyone who wants great fuel ecomony from a German engineered car thats fun to drive.
Great Sub-compact, VW Rocks!
I have been driving my 1993 Volkswagen Fox for over a year. I'm not sure how many miles are on it since the odometer has not worked since I have owned the car. This car is great and it's easy on gas. You will definitely get some looks. Alas, my brother-in-law is now taking the car. I know he'll enjoy it! It has not had any major mechanical malfunctions, only normal wear and tear. I would suggest this car to anyone. If you see this car, buy it. If you like Volkswagens, you'll love the 1993 VW Fox. The manual transmition is great and the suspension is very tight. It is fun in the corners. Hang on! I love VW.
Great Car
If you are looking for a commuter car easy on the wallet for fuel efficiency, or a zippy city car buy a Fox. You can't go wrong with a VW.
1993 Volkswagen Fox Great Work Car
The car was visually rough and had some been maintained poorly. The car is fun to drive and built well. It has a zippy little engine that gets great gas mileage on the highway. The EPA rates it at 32 MPG highway, but, I am honestly getting closer to 36 MPG. It handles great on the offramps and has good acceleration at rolling speeds. Not a race car from a stop, but the 5 spd is great on the 30 mile commute.
Always there for me!
Great Car! I've had this vehicle for about 5 years now and I love it! Worth every penny that I paid for it! Have only experienced normal wear & tear. only speedometer problem! no big deal though! very inexpensive to maintain! I recommend it to anyone...really...
