An impressive small car

I just replaced my Scion xA with a Yaris L 5-door in Classic Silver and I have to say that I really like this car a lot. I'm so glad that Toyota did away with the awful center mounted gauges. I had those in my Scion xA and grew to hate the whole setup after a few years. The interior in the Yaris is extremely well designed with easy to use controls, nice materials and very good fit and finish. It feels like a much larger, more expensive car than it actually is and drives great in the city, on the thruway, and even in the snow and ice. Out the door with tax and everything, the Yaris was a very reasonable $17,700. The Yaris is also one on the most reliable cars you can buy.

A lot of not so small car

After about an hour test drive ( my dealer put a tag on it said enjoy yourself, so I did) I walked away and turned back looking for a slightly bigger car. The Yaris while a sub compact car doesn't leave you with the " point a to b " I'm here felling. My drive consisted of in town, and paved county back roads. The Yaris is what it is, a small 4 cyl 4 door car, BUT- It DOSENT have the sub compact fell every bump in the road fell. Ride is actually good for a small car and steering is responsive as well is the small motor, of corse it dose get a bit loud if you get into it, but the response is actually a little more than you would expect, with small cars there's always trade offs. The Yaris has no problem getting out in traffic but with sprinted driving the trade off is going to be in gas mileage at some point, not that you would notice lol. The inside is actually what you would expect but Toyota found a way to bring it up a bit. Front seats are surprisingly comfortable with lower back side bolsters that kinda hug your lower sides, nice touch. The sound system in my car had the 6+" touch screen and even a pillar tweeters. Sound quality was actually SURPRISING with plenty of volume. Controls for everything were well laid out and easy to reach. So, over all Toyota has done a great job putting together a cute and enjoyable sub compact commuter car. Its not for everyone granted, but those looking into a sub compact for mainly commuting and running errands owe it to there selves to test drive a Yaris, the only thing I could ask for is cruse control, but I'm willing to do without because of the gas mileage, nice sound system, and surprisingly comfortable front seats. I bring my 2016 Yaris home today or tomorrow

Have owned my 2013 LE 5-door since new. Only a couple of minor issues easily fixed. A bullet-proof little nugget of a car. I disagree with poor reviews. This little thing rides well, is quiet on the interstate with high rated after market tires, swallows a ton of gear with rear seats folded and you could drive it cross-country easily.....It is a happy cruiser. I have a bad lower back, and these seats have never bothered me as they did in much more expensive vehicles I have owned (I got tired of their repairs and maintenance requirements). Yes, it has hard plastics here and there, but it is still a very respectable interior and layout. Tall passengers in the rear seat are stunned at the room behind my drivers seat (I'm 5'11). A great little primary or spare run-about car that I have recommended to many. The hidden gem in the Toyota line-up. Oh'', one more thing; that old school engine and four-speed automatic gets a lot of gripe for not being "new tech". But it has been around so long and proven, that there are many Toyota's/Scion's with this engine/trans that are still going strong with well into the 350,000 mile range with not a worry. I know of one like mine that already has 387,000 miles on it. Engine and Trans are still strong and car still holding up in general, quite nicely with typical wear items replaced...brakes, struts, water pump, the normal stuff. Not a glamorous ride, but it is a fun little bugger to drive. And so fun to pick your friends up at their dealership when their expensive, elite car is at the dealership broken down. A friend of mine with a BMW, caught a ride with me in my car to pick his car up after two weeks waiting on parts/repair at the dealer. He was so impressed after about 40 miles riding in all kinds of traffic (city and highway), he went and bought a twin to my car to get him to and from work (83 mile round trip from his house). The BMW is now his weekend/family vacation ride. The Yaris really is a very, very good all-around car! I cannot give an opinion though, on the new 2019 Yaris Hatch and IA Sedan that are re-named Mazda 2's, made in Mexico for Toyota.

It was fun to drive. I was looking for a subcompact car. I had a Nissan verse note before so this was similar, it’s really cute. Gas is pretty good , acceleration is a little slow but it’s good and zippy, overall I really like!

2015 Toyota Yaris is Mostly Adequate

Linda Stark, 08/25/2016
2015 Toyota Yaris LE 4dr Hatchback (1.5L 4cyl 4A)

I bought this car a week ago to replace a 2007 Kia Rio sedan. First positive impressions: nice dark grey color and body style, motor sounds better and back passenger spaces is roomier than some other economy cars test driven. Initial negative impressions: Speedometer only indicates 20-40-60 with numerical markings, 10-30-50 with hashes, and no markings at all on the fives. The side mirrors are so small and poorly shaped that if they are the slightest bit out of adjustment (or if the driver leans forward an inch) rear view is severely compromised which is made worse by the fact that the center rear view is mostly blocked by huge back seat head rests. In the Molded Places to Put Stuff category, the Yaris is an utter failure. The glove box barely holds the owners manual (and doesn't lock), the cup holders...well, take your pick--you can have two sixteen-ounce water bottles, or you can have one foam cup, or you can have a phone charger in the socket above the cup holder. Other seemingly random misshapen pits--two above the glove box, one to the left of the instrument panel, and one behind the cup holder--have proven as useless as they appear to be. The single front wiper is annoying in the beginning but doesn't seem so bad after a few rains. Despite these shortcomings which were apparent during the test drive, I chose the car for reputed reliability, price, and MPG. After 400 miles of mostly city driving I've found a few more things to like and even love. It handles well. The cargo capacity utterly amazed on a trip to the local wholesale club. We bought the usual list and the kids did not have to ride home with their feet resting on a bag of cat food or case of V-8 and assorted bags and trays piled high on their laps as before in the Rio, and there was spare room for a few more cases of water. The worst of the worst so far is that at least this particular Yaris isn't living up to its MPG rating. Not even close. As a semi-dedicated hypermiler, I usually got a little better than the Rio was rated at, even with the A/C running and even after 100,000 miles. Between the first and second fill-ups this car averaged a very disappointing 26.6 MPG. Would I choose something else knowing what I know today? Yeah, maybe.

Better Than Wannabe Racers Think It Should Be

I knew what to expect. Poor acceleration, low engine power. I commute 45 minutes each way, mostly on Interstate and divided highways. The seats are not bad. I could drive this car for 5 or 6 hours or more without getting bedsores, as some would have you think. My 2016 LE model has AC, Cruise control and a nice Entune radio with bluetooth, which does a great job of picking up my audio from my iPhone and displaying the name of the song on screen. Anybody who buys this car and then complains about its lack of power did not do their research and is suffering from unrealistic expectations. Its a basic car with minimal frills and it does a good job at being that. I find that a lot of professional reviewers are former race car drivers and very experienced at driving exotic performance cars and look at the Yaris with a jaundiced eye. Non-professional reviewers are boy-racer wannabes and have unrealistic expectations for sure. Not all reviews can be generalized like this, but a lot of them are unrealistic.

Fun Car to Drive and Easy to Park

Limited Cargo room, but if you are smart you can get everything in. I hauled 4 different peoples sets of camping gear and luggage down to the Keys, and got everything in. Easy to find Parking because it fits in small spaces. This car has a lot of pep for a 4 cylndar car and great on gas! I have driven it to NY and back to FL several times now, and it is a very reliable car. I get about 35-37 MPG Hwy and about 27 City. Its a great commuter car. It is a snap together vehicle made with some plastic parts, but it has 9 air bags...

i bought a 2014 L 4sp auto trans with 42,000 miles from hertz in 5/16 as a snowbird car. i was looking for reliable, simple and fun mostly city transport. my choice boiled down to either a french made yaris or better equipped mexican made nissan versa note at same $9k price point. i chose yaris for its simple reliability. i actually like the retro crank windows, and lack of bells & whistles, happily reminds me of what i drove almost 40 years ago. i added a plug and play oem cruise control kit that i found on yarisworld.com, as the L comes internally prewired for it. i really like it as a city car, added cruise control makes a world of difference on highway. pros: great visibility, tight turning radius, simple, roomy interior seating, mpg 38 highway/32 city. cons: steering wheel doesnt telescope, a bit noisy at 70mph (lacks 5th gear and tire choice), no tachometer. note on hertz experience: i was informed afterwards that, despite a clean autocheck, this yaris had its front bumper replaced. in a heated discussion at hertz i learned that bumpers are excluded from hertz's warranty (in very fine print) and hertz self-insures so non airbag accidents dont get reported. the car is very sound and solid, but discovering this anomaly after the purchase was deeply troubling. update 12/2018. all is fine, no issues, just changed oil twice. perfect suburban car.

Its a great economy car at a great value when buying used with really low miles. It is what it is, its not going to be as comfortable or have as many options as a porsche. Put snow tires on this thing and its unstoppable in the snow, smashed through 1-2 feet of snow no problem.

I originally had this car as a rental. I actually felt it's reliability and eager anticipation of me using the passing gear. I love how the car feels bigger than it is. The interior could use a bit more softer materials to make it easier to keep clean and scratch/damage free. It also needs arm rests, Unfortunately that isn't a standard feature. When given premium gas, This car actually gets quite perky! Needless to say, I returned the rental but bought one exactly like it with 3 doors instead of 5. I love it! The black pearl paint really glimmers in the sun....

I was looking for a fuel efficient car for a two hour round trip commute to work. I went by word of mouth on Toyota's reliability, and bought this car from a rental company. It had 65,000 miles when I purchased it in 2015, and now has 252,000 miles. The only things that I have done to this car are routine oil changes. I've bought two set of new tires, and recently had the coolant flushed. This little car has been bulletproof so far. Gas mileage is great (about 40-42 MPG @ 65MPH highway driving). My average between town and highway is usually around 35-36 MPG. My favorite thing about this car is what my wife calls "tiny car parking". It will fit just about anywhere normal cars can't. The turn radius is my next favorite thing. You can almost do a u-turn in an alleyway. The interior is quite roomy for a small car...a lot better than I had expected. My only complaint is that the body is kind of cheap (plastic bumpers with plastic brackets) but that is most cars nowadays. Toyota has made a believer out of me.

My 2014 Yaris hatchback has been flawless for seven years now and counting. It's a comfortable fit for my 6'2" body, is economical with gas and drives well (I have the manual transmission; don't know about the automatic). Not a fancy car, but solid and reliable. Highly recommended

The Yaris is a wonderful car. There is a bit of tire sound and it is not a smooth ride like a larger car but I love it. I rally miss my XM radio. This car did not come equipt for xm. Not sure why not? P.S. At the top the first question was about the type and model of the car I bought! Well the only option for me to chose was a hatchback and I do NOT have the hatchback ????? Hmmm Maybe someone could look at that glitch!

The turning radius is worse that the older 2008 modle and the took away all the cupholders that were on the side on the font dash. And i live on a road with a bad hill thats dirt and gravel and one night me and my mom tried the hill and it was snowing and we couldnt get up the hill because the car shut itself off because once you hit the max for your power the car shuts itself off completly and we could have gotten in a bad accident because of it. The good i like how it handles without snow and i like the touchacreen and hands free calling thats pretty cool. Oh almost forgot im a pretty tall guy i cant see out the rearview mirror because it was made what i think for short people and i have to turn the mirror all the way up and flip it up on that just to see out the back with it. Its just not my favourite car not even close.

I bought a 2 year old certified 2013 Yaris L (hatchback) with 25k miles and used it for 3 and half years (67k miles). 4 Adults can sit comfortably. Engine makes huge noise when ever driven over 75 miles per hour. It can carry very less cargo and does not have enough power to accelerate. Fuel efficiency is 34-35 on highway and 29-30 in city. Very less maintenance. Infact I only had to change the tires and brakes and rotors (rear drum brakes) for this. I drove it in Michigan winters and snow with both all-season and winter tires and did not see much of a difference. In snow, it does skid quite a bit, remember it is not a 4 wheel drive. Trim level L comes with non-power windows, no cruise control, no remote start, bluetooth. Reliability and value are top notch. Performance is not so great.

Great beater car. Bought it for work use because of the awesome fuel milage. Small but tough. I run 25 miles each way on country roads and have hit a racoon, a coyote, couple of rabbits, a cat and 2 deer. The first one was a lite tap and I lost the hood emblem. The second one did her in but after 206,000 miles and 0 mechanic bills she was a great friend to me. The deer lost but my Yaris was totaled too. I won because I was not injured. I had always worried about hitting a deer and having it in my front seat but it bounced off. Mine consistently got over 40 mpg, AC worked great, radio was fine, very comfortable, handled great, heated up quick and I used it for what it was, a work car. Hatchback model was like having a mini-truck. Parking was a snap because of the size. Highly recommend this car. Took the insurance money and some of mine and bought another one. This car would have ran for over 300,000 miles. I'm a Ford man but for practicality the Yaris is the best. Can't believe they've been discontinued. If you're looking for luxury, keep looking but if you're thrifty just do it. 425 miles on a tank of gas.

If you are driving this car more than 20-30 min. at a time, then you are going to be hurting! Last weekend I drove to Kansas from Colorado and back in a day, and it was killing me. After driving the car for 5 hours and a little over 400 miles I was limping at the gas station. 300 miles later I got out to walk around and was limping from the pain of my foot the entire time. I switched out with the co-driver and she said after just driving for an hour her leg and thigh was killing her. The foot peddle is small and really hard to keep at the right speed, there is no cruse control and the speed gauge goes in increments of 10 so you don't know how fast you are going. Having to keep looking at the speed gauge every 10 seconds to see that you are speeding or not makes this unsafe because YOU ARE NOT WATCHING THE ROAD! which makes this an unsafe car to drive even in the city. When we finally got back to Colorado I could barley walk to the front door of our house and 3 days later my foot still hurts.

For the past 4 years I have been driving a leased two-tone Toyota Yaris Hatchback. It was my very first "new" car. I did not even test drive it because I was unwell when we shopped for it. I picked it out because it was sporty-looking, compact, and had all the basic essentials. (My only ever grumble was the lack of an arm rest on the front passenger side.) To make a long story short, I have been absolutely thrilled with this car! It drives ever so nicely. It fits into my small garage. It is easy to maneuver in tight parking places. It was great for bringing my dog along. It had a nice cd player. To sum it all up in a word, it was cute! Now I am about to give it up for something else. I will miss you my darling Trillium!!

I will never own another Toyota after driving this piece of road noise for 8 years! You can feel every little bump or even pieces of gravel through the steering wheel. I hit a mouse one night, I know I hit it because the steering wheel transferred the squish to my fingers... gross. I hate this car... just so so mileage.

My 2013 Yaris SE is a horrible riding car, everything on the road transfers right up the steering wheel, it's like dragging your fingers along the street while you drive. I hit a mouse one night, I know I hit it because I could feel the squish through the over sensitive steering wheel.... a fraction of a second, but I could feel a distinct crush/pop...it was gross. I will never buy another Toyota product.

The first thing I noticed was that I couldn't find a control for the mirrors. Asked the guy at the rental place how you adjust them. "This is a very basic car- you just move them with your hands". We both laughed when I said I hadn't seen that in twenty years, and he agreed. OK, no biggie- I can live with that. Next thing I noticed is that there's no console to store things close by. There is a glovebox. OK- again, inconvenient but it's just a rental, right? Then I notice there's no armrest! Now that's kind of a deal breaker. Then I notice that the remote has no button, you must manually lock and unlock the doors with a key. A half hour later I'm tooling along and get some open road ahead of me. I floor it and there's the growling sound of little engine working. After several seconds of getting used to the sound, I wonder if I'm speeding. Surely I must be speeding as I had the pedal to the floor for a good-7-8 seconds........nope, I see the speedometer, 42, 43, 44 etc- I'm still nowhere near speeding, LOL. I'm thinking about calling the rental place tomorrow and seeing if I can upgrade for the two weeks I'll have it for a reasonable price. I feel sorry for anyone that drives one of these, LOL. But hey- it does look kind of cool, and the Blutooth and AC are good!

Little city sprinter!

I went from a '95 Infiniti j30t to a '15 Yaris. Two totally different creatures, both loveable in different ways. The second I test drove this car I fell in love with the nimble short city sprints, easy hairpin turns and fun compactness. The yaris has a sporty suspension that keeps you engaged with the road, and helps to handle rougher roads without bumping the front or rear ends on heavy dips. The factory Toyota sound system and speakers are great, giving a truly premium experience without charging extra. I was very happy with the easy to navigate infotainment system, which always connected quickly to my devices. Can't overstate the handiness of the knobs/buttons for all the controls too, for simplicity of use in traffic. I was always able to fit tons of stuff in the cargo area, with or without seats down. Not quite as spacious as the honda fit, but suitable for most cargo! Was able to handle 4 people's luggage on a long road trip no problem. Saved a ton of gas as well! While the tank was very small and needed to be filled often, I would still get great mileage! Main complaints are the lack of center armrest console, and extreme difficulty getting up to freeway speeds/ going up hills. For sure, its best life is lived in the city where it can fit into any parking spot, handle quick sprints and hard stops, and find a quick gas station in a pinch. Would have been happy with the yaris forever if my commute didn't change to a freeway route.
