Toyota Reliability

Greg, 08/12/2019

I've been a GM guy all my life, and our last purchase was the 2014 GMC Silverado. Problem after problem, recall after recall. GM didn't stand behind their obvious design defects, and I've finally just had it with GM. Never again. Our contractor has a Tundra with 300,000 miles, and NEVER a failure. So, we went for a new Tundra, primarily for reliability reasons. Though the mileage was quoted 13-17 mpg, we live in a flat area with 55 mph speed limits, and average better than 18 mpg around town. 20 mpg if driving less than 70 mph, and 16.5 mpg at 80 mph. Much better than I'd expected. Only one complaint--some odd user interface features that could all be fixed with a re-programming effort. Maybe down the road? Check out the YouTube videos of the rancher in Texas that was given a Tundra to beat up for 100,000 miles. Toyota brought it back, fully disassembled it, and analyzed every single part for wear vs improvement. That's why Tundras don't have all the bells and whistles of GM/Ford/RAM.

This site seriously needs to either stop taking money from manufacturers or really needs to adjust the way they review vehicles. I've owned a newer Tundra, newer Sierra, and a Ram, father-in-law owns a newer F150 as does his brother. Seriously interested in how the Tundra comes lower on some of these vehicles. The Tundra's ride quality is better than any of these other trucks period. Yes I had the 5.7, yes it had the factory upgraded stiffer suspension and bigger tires, and still the only thing that the Tundra falls short on is fuel economy. It has plenty of interior upgrades and options, along with an insane amount of aftermarket parts available, so for this article to state what it does and rate the Tundra where it does is complete horse fodder.

Solid, reliable & reasonably comfortable do-it-all

I am now about 11K miles into my ‘19 Tundra SR5 and absolutely no complaints (except MPG, more on that later). I would’ve given a 5 star rating if not for so-so MPG. I looked at every competitor from Ram, Nissan, Ford and GMC and this took me several months. I eliminated the Ford and GMC right off, I didn’t care for either interior layout/design, or frankly either exterior design. Frankly, the ubiquitous nature of the F150 put me off too. That narrowed it to the Titan, 1500 and Tundra. Frankly, I had initially eliminated the Tundra (all the reviews about MPG, dated etc.) but once I drove it, it was back in and at the top of the list. Loved the Ram 1500, while the most expensive, it was still tied for 1st. Wanted to like the Titan but sadly, driving dynamics were stiff and laggy. The combination of reasonable price/options ratio and solid reliability and resale of the Tundra won out. Frankly, I like the functional, simple but reasonably modern interior, tons of room and found the seats to be just right w/ the cloth beating out the leather, believe it or not. There is a nice rumble from the 5.7L and it feels like it’d pull a house off it’s foundation! I use this truck as a truck too, hauling around all manner of stuff in the bed and I tow a 28’ travel trailer regularly and nothing quite phases this Tundra platform. While towing my admittedly large trailer, the Tundra does work a little but it pulls it just fine with no white knuckles. Yes, it rides a little “truck like” around town but it’s a truck, not an SUV, buy accordingly. MPG is the Tundra’s weakness ... I average real world MPG/tank of 14.8mpg. Towing the trailer it drops to 7.9-8.1mpg which I can live with, I’m towing 7500lbs for chrissakes. It’s the freeway mileage I’d like to see improve by about 20%. I think this package could achieve 18-20mpg, perhaps an extra gear in the transmission would do it. That said, my neighbor’s F150 (3.5L EcoBoost) only beats my Tundra by about 2-3mpg, real world that’s not much. Someone once said “you can go out there in just about anything but to get back, you need a Toyota”. True statement. I have the 4x4 and put aftermarket lift kit, off road shocks and larger, off road oriented tires on TRD wheels. That certainly impacted MPG but makes the Tundra a VERY capable off-highway vehicle. Not much upsets this truck and it’s solidness and legendary reliability means you don’t worry about getting home. In summary, if you want a high riding luxo-barge, by an SUV not a half ton truck. But if you want a very capable, reliable, reasonably comfortable and modern do-it-all, you really cannot go wrong with a Tundra.

everything about this truck is great , but fuel! fuel should be a lot better!. the limited has all the toy"s you could need . Comfort ,leg room, heated seats. quit ride, real power, and a rear window that goes completly down when you want fresh air or want to buy a piece of lumber 12 ft long. Call this review number five not for score but number 5 for the fifth tundra I have purchased in my lifetime I give the tundra a 8.5 only because it lacks better fuel economy!

Tundra is BETTER than all the other trucks

I bought a 2018 CrewMax SR5 TRD Sport 4x4 and here are my observations. Yes, it's true, the truck is getting long in the tooth when it comes to technology but you can always buy replacement in-dash systems to get Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Secondly, I strongly disagree with their review of the ride quality of this truck. I think they got paid by Toyota's competitors. This truck rides amazingly well. Very little road noise intrudes inside. It's spacious and the seats are so comfortable. I'm 240 lbs and if it can support my weight well, it will do so for most people. The rear area is cavernous. The A/C is a a single-zone, but if you crack it up to 4/10 it cools the cabin well. I can vouch for that. It's over 105 degrees where I live and it cools the truck really quickly. Another point I'd like to make. I will stake my reputation when comparing a naturally aspirated engine over a turbo or supercharged engine. Engines like those are hard to maintain and when they break, it will cost too much to repair. In addition, a turbocharged engine runs very, very hot. And any metallurgist will tell you that if you expose the engine to high heat over time, it will wear down. A naturally aspirated engine does not have that problem and is built to last. Lastly, the reason why you buy a truck is for work. If you want luxury and up-to-date gadgets, get an SUV. A truck is a utlitarian vehicle. It gets you from A to B and is very rugged. You want these to last. The less electronics, the better - electronics wear out much quicker.

Tough Tundra

I now have 3650 miles on my Tundra 4x4 Limited Crewmax with the 5.7L V-8. The truck is very good looking in the metallic gray paint. The leather interior is better than some of its competitors. I just completed a 2500 trip to Texas driving all interstate miles. The truck averaged 18 miles per gallon. The ride is comfortable on smooth roads. It does a good job absorbing the rough roads but I wish the cab was quieter. This may be due to the fact that there is minimal insulation underneath the truck and fender wells.

I wasn't really in the market for a new truck when I found my 2019 TRD Sport. It had almost 4000 miles on it and was priced a few thousand lower than new as a result. I'm going to need something to tow the fishing boat I'm planning on getting within the year, so we decided to pull the trigger now because of the deal we got. We're recently retired, living at 6000 ft. and planning on moving to the hills, so will end up at about 7500 ft. I obviously want something with some power to deal with the consequences of driving/towing at altitude. The 5.7L engine eliminates any concerns along that front. I must say, coming from a 2004 Tacoma, this Tundra rides like a dream. I realize that's not an apples to apples comparison, but I still believe it has a very compliant ride. I also appreciate the adaptive cruise, blind spot, and rear cross traffic alerts. Even though I'm getting maybe 1 MPG better than advertised, the gas mileage is clearly a concern. Then again, buying a Tundra (or any full-sized truck for that matter) for fuel efficiency is like buying a Prius for construction work. My biggest concern in any vehicle I own is its reliabilty. I bought my 2004 Taco new for about 24k. I drove it for 15 years without any issues other than scheduled maintenance, and sold it for 12K! Do the math. If I can get that level of reliability from this truck, with even near the resale, it will more than make up for the couple hundred extra dollars I spend annually on gas as compared to the competition. So far, I'm extremely happy with the Tundra and would say if you are looking for a truck to be used as a truck, you can't go wrong with a Toyota. So I've owned the Tundra for a little more than a year now and thought I'd provide a short update. No mechanical issues at all, which is what I expected and I still love the truck. If I get very picky, I would say I'm confused about two things. One, with all the tech in modern vehicles...Blind Spot, Lane Departure, and Adaptive Cruise to name a few, why not One Touch Up and Down at least for the driver? Secondly, although the ride is comfortable, what is with the 20" wheels on a truck? It seems to me the ride would be even better with more sidewall and the spare is actually on an 18" wheel. I'll probably spring for new wheels and switch to 18's when I replace the tires. These two gripes are minor for sure, but like I said earlier, I need to be picky to find any fault with this Tundra. I see myself driving it for a long time!

Owned truck 38 months. Gas mileage is mediocre at best. Other than that this is a superb, comfortable, and fun to drive truck. Front seats big and soft. Plenty of elbow room, massive center console box. And the rear seating...first class...no comparison to other 4 door trucks. Heck you could comfortably sleep 2 in the rear seat. Love the slide down rear glass. It’s massive space for passengers or cargo with seats flipped up. 15,000 less than a comparable Ford, Ram, or Chevy. I expect the usual Toyota reliability. Why would you settle for anything else? Tail gate comes down slow with no hand needed to cushion...same for closing tail gate. A child could open or close. And it locks. LED lighting, great stereo, quiet ride. What more could you ask for in a full sized half ton truck? This is a keeper. See ya later big 3!

Best deal in a light truck!

Not sure who is paying the reviewers of light pickups. Many articles don’t include comparison to Toyota or Nissan. Perhaps to not offend buyers who only buy American? Last time I checked, the name-sake San Antonio ranch where the Tundras are built is in Texas!!! Just bought a 2019 1794 Tundra and was surprised how inexpensive it was. It’s a beautiful truck inside and out. The ride is incredible, comfortable but precise. Interior is Beautiful, quiet and massive. Less than $50,000 for what is essentially a Lexus pickup. Lower initial cost, higher resale, and way less time dealing with issues. It’s your life!

The Less Refined but Super Reliable Option

Everything the reviews say about this truck is true: it is less refined, less quiet, worst ride, below average fuel economy, and lacking in some of the modern tech features. But... if you buying a truck that will hold up for the long haul there is no better choice than the Tundra. My 2014 is my 2nd Tundra and 4th Toyota truck overall. It's been flawless. I'm still on the original battery - 5 years later - which is nearly unheard of in the desert heat. It has great power, a strong and reliable transmission, and really nothing ever breaks. I love the truck and cannot imagine buying any other brand/model. That said, the truck desperately needs an overhaul to stay relevant and competitive. The interior design is dated, the powertrain, while good, is lagging behind the technology of other makers. Overall, it is a dated package, just like me. Still, I appreciate the simplicity of the design. Open the hood and you'll be amazed how accessible everything is if you want to work on the truck yourself. The resale value on these trucks is better than any other model, which makes them a great new truck buy, but not so great in the used truck market.

Compared the 2019 Tundra and F150. Went with the Tundra primarily because: 5.7L naturally aspirated engine should last longer than Ford’s relatively new turbocharged 6 cylinder engine and Toyota’s reputation for durability. Also appreciate the Tundra’s huge interior, uncluttered instrument panel, very comfortable seating and better grill design. Expect to get many years of happy ownership with the Tundra. Love driving this truck!

Had a 2015 tundra and purchased a 2019 tundra sport. Love the softer ride and the handling on our mountain roads. A lot of curves. My new truck has sway bars front and rear. What a difference along with the different suspension and 20 inch tires. Haven’t gotten used to the different dash yet. I love the radar assist for the cruise control and the automatic high beam led headlights.

TRD SPORT 5.7L short bed

Best looking truck Ive ever seen. The sport is filthy is graphite gray. LED headlights are exquisite. Coupled with Tundras reputation for durability I knew I had to have this truck even though this is my 1st Toyota. I doubt the 1 star reviewer actually owns a Tundra. Why would you see a short bed you dont like then buy it and then say you hate the truck? Crewmax cab is huge. Im 6'3" and theres a foot of space between the back of my seat and my kids knees. Theres enough space for my 3 kids and dog. The short bed is fine, cabin space is far more important. If i need to haul more than the bed holds I have 2 trailers. The gas mileage is bad but I knew this before I bought It, just like Einstein knew the bed was short. We only drive it around town and the farm, no commuting. It tows 10,000lbs which is plenty for 95% of the people that actually tow anything. I towed a pontoon boat and firewood with a Honda Pilot so the extra tow capacity is just money in the bank. I haven't had it long so I cant review some aspects of it. I dont recommend it because I want to be the only one around in the gray TRD Sport model ,)

I have owned 6 Toyota 4WD pickups and a Prius for an average of 8 years each and driven them and average of 180,000 miles and never had a breakdown, only needing to do scheduled maintenance on the vehicles. I have also owned Willys, Dodge, Ford, and Chevy trucks and SUV's and they have been far from reliable. My 2011 Silverado has had emissions system problems that have cut short trips on 3 different occasions within the first 25,000 miless and I decided to sell it to buy a truck that would not let me done. After reading about the 2 million Ford trucks with door locks that fail and similar issues with the Ram trucks and even having to switch off the passenger airbag of my Chevy truck with GM refusing to replace the defective Takata activator, it came down to Toyota or Ram. With the ongoing delay of a new truck from Toyota which introduced the current Tundra in 2007, no V-6 engine option, and the need to add after market locking differentials (as they only offer an anti-spin differential that uses the wheel brakes), my next pickup is going to be a Ram 1500.

I agonized for over a year on balancing between needs and wants in terms of buying a new truck. I brushed the Tundra aside at first because it doesn’t get the best mileage doesn’t offer the most torque, lower tow rating, cannot get a 6.5’ bed in the crewmax, and a dated engine and frame. But on truck buying game day I needed a big back seat for two car seats, I have a 5 mile commute (don’t care about mpg), there is not a plastic air damn underneath the front bumper which gives you true ground clearance (I live in a snow area), classic V-8 feel and power along with a boring 6 speed transmission that shifts smooth. I don’t have anything to tow but I can if I need to, and reliability that goes along with being “dated”. The options on the limited trim are a good balance along with the tow package with the 36 gallon tank is a plus. All of the safety Sence features are helpful and easy to adjust. 1 year update: Still a solid truck in terms of reliability. Only one recall and no unscheduled maintenance. 8500 on the odometer and my only dislike is the rear suspension in terms of payload capacity. When I put a load of firewood in the back the truck squats quite a bit. I added step-boards to help the kids crawl into the truck which was easy to install and a TRD cold-air intake for fun. All in all good truck.

I love my Tundra truck, Got 78000 on this truck, never had a problem with it, or the two I owned before this one. I still have the 2011 and that one is as reliable as my newer one . The only thing I don't like is the small gas tank, but the 2016 and newer trucks have a 38 gallon tank which was much needed. I added air shocks to the rear so my truck wouldn't squat when I tow with it. Other than that the truck is perfect, simple and reliable. Im not into all the gadgets in other trucks that just go bad anyway . My Tundra always does whatever I need it to do. I do have one problem, I want to get a new truck but I cant find any I like as much as the one I have .

I was really worried about the gas mileage, but we were needing something with the interior size. Boy am I not disappointed! The interior features are great. Very smooth ride. Good turning axle. AND gas mileage is decent for a V8. Great mileage on highway. In town I’m regular driving, not gunning often, and no towing. So far so great. I would definitely recommend the tundra to others. You can’t beat the reputation and what you’re actually getting with the vehicle. Not to mention the maintenance that’s included the first 3 years of newer models. This is my first tundra and I literally just told someone today, that’d buy it all over again. I shopped many many brands for a long time before drawing this conclusion. There are some other nice trucks out, but this was a no brainer.

I am very pleased with the 2017 4X4 Platinum. Great towing, lots of room, and more power than necessary generally. The only complaint I have is the fuel economy at 18 on the highway. The computer average reading is generally 1/2 mile greater than actual. Really pleased with the towing and braking. If I need to replace it, I will get another one. .

Tundra vs GMC

GMS, 04/02/2019

We had a 2014 GMC, and had problem after problem, including a wheel bearing that went out at 50k miles, dim headlights, and a host of other issues. I’ve absolutely had it with GM, got rid of the GMC and bought the Tundra. The Tundra mileage is better than quoted, and though it is a bit antiquated, reliability is what I’m after. Take a look at the Texas rancher YouTube videos where the ranchers beat up their Tundra for 100k miles. Toyota brings the truck back, dissembles and analyzes every part.

Yes, I purchased another Tundra after I decided that my 2016 Tundra fell short in several areas that I felt was important but ignored . I had written a long review but somehow it was deleted after being there for four years ; maybe my mistake when trying to upgrade it. I had no complaints about build quality ,engine 5.7, gas mileage ,seats ,or ride . I had four issues which were (1) no grab handle for the driver . (2) Hidden controls while driving (3) No daytime driving light without turning on the parking lights and (4) No daytime dash lights that made some gauges hard to see and a drab dash. Although the grab handle was omitted starting with the 2014 model it is easy to replace if you want it. In fact Sparks Toyota in S.C. has a kit with all the necessary parts . Cost about 150.00 and takes about 45 minutes . I replaced mine in the 2016 and the 2019 and it now looks like it should . What irked me was that Toyota left it in the Sequoia and removed it from the Tundra and the Tacoma . The second complaint was about the hidden controls that are behind the steering wheel on the right side and they are still there . When the steering wheel is straight one cannot see these controls (4 pushbuttons) without leaning far to the right ; try that at 70 mph. I cannot believe that someone at Toyota has not corrected that by now. The third item as a drab poorly lighted dash without daytime dash lights without either turning on the parking lights or headlights . This was one issue that was corrected ; with the stalk on auto the DRLs are on and that dash has been redesigned and has good adjustable illumination in daytime and night. It looks like the hidden controls are here to stay and you can replace the handle if you want it and the lighting issues have been solved so I going to keep this one for a while ! One option that I added was the TRD dual exhaust (cost around $1200 installed) with side exhausts with chromeor black extensions) and it looks and sounds great . Not loud but with a low deep tone that reminds one about the 60's muscle cars. This system is true dual exhaust with two bullet like mufflers with pipes front and rear , not one pipe from the engine to the muffler and then two pipes out to the rear. All stainless steel like the OEM system and you can recover about 1/3rd of the cost by selling the original system .Makes the Tundra complete !!

My 2018 Tundra Sport 4x4 is the third Tundra I have owned. I drive a Ford Raptor for work. When I take it in to fleet for the 4 thousand oil change, I always wonder if it will be going back to the Ford dealership for faulty oil seals, etc. The Tundra has been the best with no issues mechanical issues. Tundra's are solid trucks that will go the distance and bring you back home.

I have tried several full size pickups over the years. My 2019 Platinum Tundra is by far the best truck I have ever driven. I comes with Toyota's great warranty and name which in my opinion means a lot. Reliability and performance are what you'll get with this truck. Can't say enough great things about it. I wasn't sure if I wanted to wait for the 2020 but am glad I did not. The reviews for the 2019 far surpass what the 2020 is offering. The tow rating is great and it is an incredibly comfortable ride. You won't be disappointed!!

2019 Tundra Double Cab Work Truck

VEB, 10/12/2019
2019 Toyota Tundra SR5 4dr Double Cab 4WD SB (4.6L 8cyl 6A)
3 of 3 people found this review helpful

I looked at Chevy, GMC, Dodge, Honda for over a year trying to stay around 32K. Toyota was over priced when the search started and as the dealer said they never go on sale. I was currently driving a 2005 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab and want something similar in size and back seat comfort. After looking at all the small trucks available the back seating was less than what was in the dodge except for Honda. The Honda was the best value but it really isn't a truck that can be used around my yard as the front end is to low to ground. So full size search started new and used (budget) Dodge tried to push the 6 cylinder but it was under powered and once we got to the 8 the pricing ended up being around 40-42, they did not offer the work truck model at the dealerships I visited, I will say the 40-42 was a little high but the truck had everything I would want. GMC was to expensive and Chevy was about the same as the Dodge but interior was not as nice and the transmission did not seem to shift smoothly, I noticed this on several of the Chevy's. I finally revisited the Toyota dealer after walking lot and seeing a Tacoma 4 door with 6 foot bed listed at 37K. Ride was nice but there was little room for passengers in the back seat if my seat was adjusted so I was comfortable. In walking be the tundra they had 1.7K off Dealer and addition 3K cash from Toyota. Apparently they do go on sale. I drove the double cab and it drove just like my Dakota, checked the back seat and even though it was not a crew cab there was just as much room as the Dakota had and more room than any of the small pickups. The base model Tundra has more options than the Chevy work truck and for me it was fine including the steel wheels (might not be for everyone) . I have had it a month and there is not buyers remorse. Other trucks have smoother rides such as the Dodge but if you don't mind driving a truck that rides like one this mighty be for you. The work truck model kind of steps you back in time and the only thing missing is manual windows.

Really good truck but lacking in execution

This "truck" really only needs a couple things to take it from good to very good or excellent. First, it needs an exhaust resonator which they apparently eliminated back in 2008 or whatever to make it sound more like a truck. Seriously?! Why not sell it quiet and then let the aftermarket take care of the noise increase, like every other truck?? The drone was literally driving me nuts and I seriously considered selling it before I came across an aftermarket resonator. I'm now getting 1 MPG less with the resonator but it's been totally worth it for me. Second, the Bluetooth phone audio is from the stone ages (My daughters 14 year old Lexus is literally 2x better). This, despite the fact that the radio itself sounds great?! It's honestly so bad that I mounted my phone to the vent and use the speakerphone instead of the Bluetooth connection. Anyway, I suppose I'll bite the bullet at some point and buy an aftermarket stereo system but it's really ridiculous considering the price point. My one last gripe (and much less annoying) is the paint. It scratches way too easily, especially considering this is a truck. Anyway, whoever is responsible for the exhaust and the Bluetooth phone system should be fired, plain and simple. Moving on, and despite the negatives, I still think this is a great truck. It's easy to drive (especially on the highway), it feels like it will last forever, the brakes are excellent, and the seats are comfortable over very long distances. I know other reviewers have complained about the front seat comfort (they are indeed firm) but my legs don't get tired and achy over long distances, like they tend to do with softer, more luxurious seats.

The most American light pickup made. (my) Pros: Beautiful interior on my 1794, quality of fit and finish both inside and out, TRD PRO dual exhaust is awesome, that exclusive rear window that drops out of sight, legendary reliability, doors go 'chunk' when you close them, big analog knobs, switches, and buttons, 4.30 rear-end (more on that), great headlights/fog lights, massive rear seating area on the crew cab, quiet ride (well, there's that serious V8 rumble w/ the TRD PRO exhaust), hit the tow/haul button and hold on! It changes everything! Massive center console! Cons: Gas mileage (I knew that going in and I roll that into the total cost of ownership over time), the premium stereo system is severely overstated and I will be upgrading it. I wish the truck had better lighting and/or layout for the lesser used functions like tow/haul mode, trailer braking, etc. The cons are mostly the result of it being the same basic truck since the 2nd gen came out. For me, that just means that it ages well. It is simpler and lacks the doo-dads of the others, and for me, that's a good thing as there's less to go wrong. I intend to break my pattern of owning a ton of vehicles, and to hold on to this for many years. I'll update the infotainment system and speakers sometime down the road (and may also add 360 view cameras). I'll also add more bed lighting and flexibile storage. Fantastic to drive and reeks of quality.

This is my third Tundra I own. The 1st one was a 2008 SR5, then a 2015 1794 and now a 2019 1794. And this one is the best one yet. With Radar cruise control, lane departure alert, automatic hiigh beams and pre-collision system plus a 38 gallon gas tank. It is just a fun truck to drive. It is so quiet and the handling is great. Take one for a test drive and see for yourself...

Had more vehicles than your wife’s had shoes..Have a lot of experience driving brothers Sequoia so when a great lease deal came up last summer I stepped into a Crewmax TRD Sport..14k miles..ZERO ISSUES..EPA 13-17..5500 pound truck..local driving you get around 13..I m not a hypermiler or do I drive it like I stole it..on long distance drives I can get 21 mpg ..lotsa torque so just let it go thru the gears ..80 mph it’s only turning around 2k on the tach..I have many times on local day drives of 150-200 miles gotten as high as 25 mpg filling up before and after drive..If they have a similar deal available when lease is up..there will most likely be another in my driveway..love to triptonic transmission shifter..ps get good street cred from other drivers when driving a battle wagon..4WD TOO !! TRY THIS WITH ANY OTHER MODEL.... Walked out of lease 3/4 of the way thru.. Picked up a similar 2020 CREWMAX 4WD GOT EQUITY on 18 month old truck... Put ZERO DOWN on new lease.. Am paying 31 dollars less a month.. The 2019 Tundra lease included 4500 down...of which 2500 was equity in my Oddessy van at leases end...PHEW Am I tickled and a card carrying member of THE TUNDRA LEASE CLUB....

The ride is fine and the interior space is amazing, however, the interior is kind of cheap. I have the TRD SR5 and the navigation keeps cutting off, plastic steering wheel and the overall inside is kinda cheap plastic. The fuel mileage is awful. For being a Toyota, it should be better but it’s worse than a Titan. The turning radius is horrible. I would consider another Tundra ONLY if they made better interior for those who don’t want a limited, a much better turning radius and the most important, better fuel mileage.

Yes, the fuel economy sucks

Bryan, 01/11/2020

I knew that the fuel economy sucks on a 5.7 V8 Toyota Tundra prior to buying it. But I have had a 2002 V8 Ford and a 2005 GMC Sierra before this truck. My last truck was a 2010 Toyota Tacoma and it had 200k miles and was a 9 year old vehicle when it was totaled. Not my fault, guy ran a stop sign and at 60 mph their wasn't much left of the tacoma. Thankfully my wife and I survived, even though we were both hurt in the accident. Before the accident my truck had ZERO issues, and i would have trusted my kid driving across country in it. I about hit the floor when my insurance company called me and offered me 14k for my tacoma. Thats the thing with Toyota's, if you want reliability like no other, and a truck that holds its value....Well there you go! I don't care about all the added crap that other manufacturers put on their vehicles. I want a truck to do ONE thing, get me and my family from A to B, Haul some toys, and don't leave me stranded...Period! MY 2019 Tundra has right at 20k miles on it and I have now had it over a year. I have ZERO complaints with the truck. Yes, it gets crappy gas millage, but not any different than the 2002 or 2005 trucks I owned with V8s. Just don't drive it like a maniac and you should be fine.

I’ve owned Toyota’s since 2002. On my second Tundra since 2006. It’s true Tundra has fewer bells and whistles and fuel economy is lacking when compared to the other models. But if you objectively take a look at overall reliability in terms of mechanical, electrical, accessories and body fit and finish, no other model comes close to the Tundra. Consumer Reports also dings Tundra on similar issues but of all models tested, only Tundra gets an above average or superior rating and that’s consistently been true for years. Hands down...the Tundra is a sound purchase if reliability and service matter at all.

They have a problem with radios freezing up. They want to charge you to do an update on a radio and if the update doesn't work you have to buy a new radio. I've never seen such a bunch of **** in my life. You should not have to buy a new factory radio on a two-year-old vehicle. At this time I have two 16s and one 17, all made by Toyota. You look around online and find all of the people having the same problem you would think Toyota would fix it and not charge you to buy a new damn radio. Maybe it's time to move back to Chevy

Great truck but for the money Toyota needs to step up to the level Ford is at on options. My truck is a platinum level demo truck that supposedly had all the options for 55K. No capless gas fill. No power roof shade slide. No remote start as standard. Not enough USB ports. I have 1 in my truck and 2 or 3 cigarette lighter spots? Rear seat back doesnt fold forward. Rear tailgate should come standard with protective liner. Would be nice if toyota had the step up tailgate. I'm 53 and getting in the back can be a challenge. To much engine noise.

I have purchased F150's since 1990; however, I made the mistake and bought a used 2015 F150 Platinum. It was a one owner, and appeared to be take care of based on the carfax. Much to my surprise, there was pertinent information not reported to carfax. Having been screwed by the dealer, I made the switch to Toyota. The clincher was the lifetime warranty offered by GST. Complaints are: 1. Transmission leaves much to be desired. 1st gear is pretty much a granny gear; depending on speed(under 25)when slowing down to navigate R/R tracks, or other obstacles, it feels like it is slipping between 1st and 2nd. 2. Lots of plastic in the interior. 3. While gas mileage is right on projection 13 city/17 hwy; frequent trips to the pump is the norm. 4. Overall quality is lacking. Going back to an F150, or possible a F250.

2019 Toyota Tundra SR 4dr Double Cab SB (4.6L 8cyl 6A)

tundra's claim to be built in the USA. yea right, when the sunami hit japan the plant was shut down for lack of parts... Assembly is in the USA from parts shipped from japan on giant container ships... Driving freeways in the city I see as many toyota;s and other foreign makes as any other brands sitting on the shoulder broke down.. Folks who have toyotas have the toyota syndrome, that is they believe all the hype when in reality toyotas are no better than any other make Update: I'm now no more driving the tpyota after 9,000 miles since the ride is so rough I just couldn't stand it any longer. Seemed to be a decent truck but the ride was like a stagecoach must have been plus the mileage fuel was dismal . I thought I wanted a truck but have gone back to a sedan

What a shame Toyota! I own an '08 Limited Tundra and a '19 1794 Tundra and drive my '08 dailey and think about selling my '19 with 7,500 miles on it every day. I thought I would never own another truck but I will never buy another one.
