The Ioniq 5 is part of Hyundai's electric lineup that also includes the Kona Electric SUV and the Ioniq 6 sedan. It's the largest electric SUV the brand currently offers, but not for long. The all-new three-row Ioniq 9 SUV is expected to debut toward the end of 2024. The Ioniq 5 is one of our highest-rated electric SUVs and is about the size of a Tucson but looks more like a sleek hatchback than an SUV. For 2025, Hyundai has introduced a new high-performance Ioniq 5 N model that's separately reviewed on Edmunds and improved the rest of the lineup with more range and a new off-road-themed XRT trim.
The 2025 Ioniq 5 will have a Tesla-style charging plug. This should allow 2025 Ioniq 5 owners access to the Tesla Supercharger stations across the country without needing to use an adapter. The 2025 Ioniq 5 also gets a higher-capacity battery that Hyundai says provides slightly more range — up to an estimated 310 miles for a single-motor Ioniq 5. Other small but important changes include the addition of new front and rear styling, a rear windscreen wiper, a relocated wireless charging pad, reworked interior controls for easier use, more advanced driver assist features and wireless smartphone connectivity. Lastly, all 2025 Ioniq 5s will be built in Georgia. Hyundai says this should allow Ioniq 5 buyers to at least partially qualify for the federal tax credit. The Ioniq 5 is an excellent choice for an electric SUV, but it's up against several competitive rivals. The Ford Mustang Mach-E and Tesla Model Y are two of its top competitors. The Volkswagen ID.4 is another worthy rival, particularly if you're on a tight budget. The Ioniq 5's corporate cousin, the Kia EV6, is another compelling alternative that provides slightly longer range. Smaller, more affordable competitors include the Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia Niro EV. For the full rundown on the Ioniq 5, check out our test team's thorough review in the Expert Rating below.
[Editor's note: The following unofficial information is based on last year's Ioniq 5 and updated with what we know so far about the 2025 Ioniq 5. We'll continue to update this section once as we get more information.] The 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is a small electric crossover SUV sold in four trims: SE Standard Range, SE, SEL, XRT and Limited. All except the SE Standard Range can be had in rear- or all-wheel drive. The rear-wheel-drive Ioniq 5 uses a single electric motor located at the rear axle. It produces 168 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque in the SE Standard Range trim level; the motor makes 225 hp in all other models. The AWD version adds a second motor at the front axle, for a combined total of 320 hp and 446 lb-ft. Read more for a complete rundown of the Ioniq 5's range and standard and optional features.
For 2025, long-range Ioniq 5s swap the old 77.4-kWh unit for a larger 84-kWh unit, and according to Hyundai that nets 280-plus miles on all-wheel-drive models and 310-plus miles if you opt for rear-wheel drive. Standard-range models also get a slight bump in battery size from 58 kWh to 63 kWh, which increases range to 240-plus miles, per Hyundai. XRT models come with standard all-wheel drive and the larger battery pack. The EPA has yet to confirm Hyundai's new range estimates. Despite the bigger batteries, we don't think power figures will grow for 2025. Hyundai hasn't confirmed power outputs for the refreshed Ioniq 5, but the rear-wheel-drive's 225 horsepower and the all-wheel drive's 320 hp should stick around unchanged.
