The ride I have always wanted

Brand new car. No initial purchase issues and not driven long enough to have reliability or service issues. This is more a first impression that a long term ownership review. The Focus ST is a niche car. It is aimed (noticed how I didn't say focused ;-) ) at someone who wants a fun and exciting car that is also practical and affordable. I don't believe everything I read, especially in advertising, but this car delivers. I am surprised at how well it delivers. The acceleration is quick, the steering is quick, and the braking is quick. There are 5 other cars and a pickup in my driveway, but there is only one car you would chose if you said to yourself "I just feel like going out for a drive". There is great power delivery even down low and when the turbo kicks in you feel it push you back in the seat. Gearbox is smooth. You can row back and forth through the six gears if you want, but the powerband is broad enough that downshifts are not nearly as necessary as some manuals I have owned. The tires and suspension let you feel all the road imperfections, but it is not harsh and handling always feels connected instead of busy or mushy. Torque steer? It is there if you push it in first or second. Not hard to control, but can be surprising when the car decides it doesn't want to accelerate in a straight line like you expected. Overall the car is reasonably quiet. You do hear the engine 'power symposer' when you accelerate, but not even loud enough to drown out a normal conversation. I have yet to hear the turbo whistle at all. Didn't get the Recaro seats. The base seats fit me much better. My ST1 has the base Ford Sync, so I can't comment on Sync 3, either. Although this is my daily driver, in no way is it just an average commuter car. It is for people who enjoy cars and want something that involves them in driving. Choosing an ST is a personal statement. I think it is a mistake by Ford to offer it only in the ST1/2/3 packages. I would have liked to pick and chose exactly which options fit me. A marketing decision I am sure. I don't challenge Mustangs, Camaros and Chargers at the stop lights. I don't wait to ambush BMW's and Vettes on twisty roads. I don't look for 2 miles of straight road where I can wind it out (but I do admit, on ramps have become lots of fun all of a sudden). There are bigger cars and faster cars and smoother cars and easier cars to drive. My ST is an every day driver that puts a smile on my face. It knew it was what I wanted as soon as I drove it.

This is not your father's daily driver. I was looking for a replacement hatchback for my beloved 2002 Honda Si (251,000mi). I had recently rented a 2015 Focus sedan and was surprisingly impressed by it's "big car" characteristics. I have never owned a Ford automobile. Since Honda didn't have a replacement Si available I went to test drive a basic 5spd Focus hatchback. Looking around the lot I was impressed from the window view of the ST interior. I had not researched that car and didn't know what I was in for after asking for a test drive. Not surprisingly, the salesman offered no resistance... I bought it the first time I shifted into 3rd gear carrying some revs. I won't soon forget the experience of that turbo propelled acceleration. The overwhelming harmony of the power, steering and symphony of engine and exhaust notes was instantly addictive. It was the Si I had always dreamed of and much, much more. The fit and finish of the interior is excellent, very easy on the eyes and full of discovery. I'm 6'1", 210lbs and find the seats fit like a glove. They are comfortable and meaningful when you accelerate into a curve and pleasant while waiting for the green. I have owned this car for 3 weeks, have 1300 miles of city/freeway driving and the only think I miss from the Si is the somewhat less frequent stops at the gas station. This is truly a 6-star vehicle and feel fortunate I stumbled upon it. Some 6 months and 9,000 miles down the road and I'm still giving my ST 6 stars. This car has completely failed to disappointment me. I never thought I'd offer to get off the couch to go buy a loaf of bread but there I am, still enjoying the first blush of excitement this vehicle offers every time I fire it up. Could I get better gas mileage? Sure, if there weren't any freeway on-ramps. It's nice to know that if I keep my foot out of it, I can easily get 30+ mpg on the freeway. I took a friend on a 200 mile ride recently and he commented repeatedly how much quieter the cabin was than in his Prius C. It's also much more quiet than our 2013 Mazda 3. You don't see many ST's on the road but when I do, the knowing smile and nod between drivers tells the whole story.

Traded our Focus Hatch for a Focus ST

We were looking at an SUV (Escape) when the ST caufgt our attention. We really hated the idea of driving an SUV on an every day basis and we loved our Focus. The dealer threw in roof racks for those occasional hauling duties and we stayed with a Focus but one with amazing performance. The one weak point in our previous Focus was the auto transmission. We love driving a manual again as it ups the fun factor to a considerable degree. The ST is a delight, fast, fun, and engaging. We take it everywhere because its such fun to drive. One down side is the Recaro seats. My butt fits fine. However, I'm 5'7", 175, with broad shoulders. The Recaro seats are too constricting at the shoulders. I'd have been happier with the regular front seats in the Focus. Overall, we love the ST and are looking forward to putting many miles on it as we explore the back roads of America. An addition benefit is that I get to buy American, something we consider important.

Ford has Finally Brought This Winner to the USA!

Everything you've read about the car is true, it's just simply a blast to drive. I've had it for a week now, and I find myself having to pay more attention to my speed as the car wants you to open it up. I cross shopped the WRX, Focus ST, & GTI. They all drove great, but for the money, Ford come out on top. The Recaro seats take a minute to get used to, but after driving daily, I love them. I'm 5'7", 215 lbs and they fit like a glove now. I do wish it offered more internal storage, but other than that, no complaints. If you're looking for some utility with a lot of fun, don't skip driving this car. You won't regret it. Will update review with reliability, maintenance cost, etc. after owing for a year or so.

The ST1 variant is the best bang for the buck.

Ford has managed to pack a 252 HP pocket rocket with a top speed of over 150 into a family friendly car that's just as much at home hauling around your brood as it is hauling A**! Make no mistake, this little car is a performance automobile, and while it is soon to be eclipsed by the more track "Focused" RS model, the ST still reins supreme at performance for price. The car is available in three trim levels, ST1 (base), ST2 and ST3. The ST2 and ST3 models include the now "infamous" Recaro seats. It's a shame that Ford could not have optioned the seats separately like they did with the moon roof. The highly bolstered Recaro seats are in a love/hate relationship with certain owners. Some owners find the seats amazingly comfortable, while others find them much too confining and almost abusive on long road trips. So prevalent is this view, there are active threads on ST enthusiast boards requesting seat swapouts with other owners. If you want more cabin refinement (leather interior, power seats, 10 speaker radio, Sirius XM, ambient lighting, etc) then you have no option but to get the Recaro's. If you don't like them, you are stuck giving up some refinement on the base model. Let's not kid ourselves here, though. The base model ST is still hansomely appointed with keyless entry and pushbutton start, a six speaker AM/FM CD system with bluetooth and USB connectivity and hands free phone integration. Air conditioning, power windows and mirrors are also standard, as is the leather trimmed steering wheel and sport pedals and backup camera all standard. From an interior standpoint the ST1 is no slouch, but if you don't want to deal with the Recaro's then your back passengers are going to have to settle with less cupholders and the lack of dual zone climate control. If you do like the Recaro's then the world is your oyster and you can push up the price of this automobile past $30K with the addition of full leather seating, heated drivers seats, ambient lighting, back passenger center console with cup holders and the like. The bottom line is that you should perform an extended test drive with the Recaro's prior to purchasing this car, especially if you tend to tip the scales on the large side as I do. But whatever your choice, you will soon forget about the lack of cup holders when you fire this bad boy up. The car has plenty of acceleration across the entire RPM band, and the six speed gearbox is a joy to use. The ride is a bit more stiff than the standard Focus, but is not what I would call uncomfortable. The fuel economy is not great, but that's to be expected given the type of engine being used. However careful shifting and expressway driving can bring your MPG's up to a respectable 30 MPG. And while driving like a responsible adult may appeal to your practical, it's ability to throw you back in your seat, and grip corners like on rails that will put that permanent smile on your face and turns you back into your inner 12 year old. You'll be fighting over your significant other who gets to take junior to his play date. This car is not for everyone. If you are simply looking for a vehicle to haul your two young kids around town, then you can get a suitable substitute with more room and much less cash. However, if you really appreciate driving, and you want to get behind the wheel of a car that is able to always put a grin on your grill AND haul the little ones, then it's hard to beat this car for bang for your buck.

Sporty, Agile, Fun car... Not for beginners

The specs on this car speak for itself. The 0-60 and 1/4 mile times are respectable off the lot. The Driver's seat and vantage point are great. The front passenger seat leaves something to be desired when it comes to leg room. The center console eats up some of that leg room. Rear seating is nice and roomy for a hatchback. The major snags I've come across with this car are Torque Steer problems and anticipating the initial boost from the turbo. All things considered, I still love my car.

Best Functional Sport Sedan For The $$

Rockinroller, 02/05/2016
2016 Ford Focus ST 4dr Hatchback (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 6M)

I shopped and test drove everything that resembled a "sports sedan" and even a couple of coupes (namely, the Mustang GT) before zeroing in on this understated, under-appreciated sportster from Ford. I see a lot of Focus vehicles on the road around here (Detroit area) and they always grab my attention in terms of being the perfect blend between a small and medium vehicle. After driving an ST base (I will NOT purchase either a Mustang or Focus ST with Recaros--they are designed for backs of very narrow people!), I had the following impressions: 1. The get up and go factor is amazing for this price point (around $20,000 plus tax in these parts). The 6spd shifter is tight and very similar to shifting in my 2015 Mustang GT (which I just got rid of, T.G.). 2. Ergonomically the front seats and general interior for the driver makes much more sense than the Mustang's: The seats feel more bolstered and not angled back as much as the GT's. Visibility is dramatically better in the ST. The base seats are firm and well bolstered, and are even comparatively attractive. The only thing missing that Ford really needs to integrate into its speedo area is digital readouts for the speed. "72" is so much easier spelled out in numbers staring at your in the center of the gauge cluster than a short line segment with an arrow pointing to it on a round speedometer. 3. Back seats are actually usable (unlike the Mustang's) and cargo space is huge, again compared to the Mustang. There's a YouTube video of a guy showing you how to make the back seats fold absolutely FLAT, making that entire rear area into very usable cargo hauling space. Plus the hatch opening allows for some pretty tall and wide items to be placed into the back area. 4. Winter and wet traction. This car actually moves through ice and snowfall less than 3-4", which is a common occurrence in Michigan winters. I was pleasantly surprised to see how well the all season stock 18" tires did. The only issue is with plowing, due to the fat tires pushing the snow when it's in excess of 3-4", rather than cutting through it. I would suppose the purchase of 4 winter-only tires on spare rims would be a good investment, especially for those who purchase an ST with the Summer-only tires. 5. The value on this vehicle is tremendous, when you look at the resale prices of year-old models. The depreciation of $2000-$3000 in a year (especially if you stay with the base ST and not pump the price up of the Focus to $30,000 or more) is in the top 10% of the lowest depreciation of vehicles in this market segment. The ONLY recommendation I'd make would be to designers at Ford: to provide for a spoiler delete option (like the Mustang). That thing is ugly.

Had the vehicle for a littler over a year now. Still loving the car, hate the traction control but you can turn it off, I just wish you could program it to stay off. I did have an oil leak that needed to be fixed. I will say that if you live in the Houston Texas area, do NOT buy from Tomball Ford.

Actually not buying due to the Recaro Seats

vev, 01/29/2016

This car is completely awesome EXCEPT for the Recaro seats. I am an average male. 5 feet 10 inches tall and 185 pounds. The Recaro seats are the most uncomfortable seats ever. I test drove the car for about 30 minutes and my legs were smashed together the entire time and actually started to get numb. The back area isn't quite as bad but certainly not comfortable. The ONLY negative comments anyone has on this car is the Recaro seats. Edmunds review said the same thing. They look great but you can't sit in them. If you want either of the two option packages you HAVE to get them. I understand they are for high speed cornering but how many people actually take the car on a race track. What an absolute shame Ford makes you get these seats. (Not if you get the base model but it isn't near as nice) Plus, the people that designed these seats can't be comfortable seating in them. I'm sure a small percentage of people like them but it will cost more sales than get sales. Make sure you take a long test drive sitting in them before you buy. VERY DISAPPOINTED

DO NOT BUY

I have had my focus ST a little over a year, and in that year it has gone to the shop over 8 times. cylinder 3 misfire every time. Ford refuses to buy it back or fix the problem. I bought the car for reliable transportation, and it is everything but that. Many other people are having the same problem, I'm told by ford its a global problem and they are working on a fix for it. So if ford does not have a fix for the problem they should stand by their product and buy it back from me. When you buy a brand new car you should not be taking it back to the shop constantly, and should not be continuously left on the side of the road waiting on a tow truck. I have been without my car as of today 10/16/17 for a week, last week it broke down on me and was in the shop twice in one day. The car does not run right now at all. I've put in a a application for ford to buy it back from me for the third time now and its currently "under investigation". my advice to you if you are looking to buy a focus ST, DONT.

The Focus ST i bought is a 2015 Focus ST1. So no Recaros, MyTouch, or Sony stereo. I will say that this car has been great to me, and I bought this car with the intention to make it my own version of what Ford started. I really enjoyed the way Ford did make this car but it does have room for improvement. Since I've owned the car it has been modified to full bolt-ons and tuned making just under 300hp TO THE WHEELS (fixing my feeling of slight underpower). I've also added an aftermarket stereo keeping the subwoofer under the seat(not take away from any space in the hatch area). I also added a thicker rear sway bar to eliminate the factory oversteer from the car while keeping the factory suspension. After you do all of that.... The car turns in great, feeling confident through any turn. It pulls out of every turn smoothly and aggressively, and brakes like any German car I've ever owned. I have daily driven this car now for over three years with not one breakdown, shop visit, or issues that I haven't caused myself. I am proud to own this car, and don't mind the occasional square off between any stock to mildly modified RS!

Positive Early Review Base ST

Update: Still good, even better. Nothing to detract after 16 months and 15,000 miles. Well thought out and with ample performance characteristics, especially its torque power. Accessible power and great road manners going up and down mountain curves. Sure-footed. As other drivers comment, there is pronounced torque steer per FWD acceleration; I knew that before purchase and I accept it. I am an experienced manual driver, more than 40 years on many clutches, and it took me about 3,000 miles to master this one. I agree with several pro reviewers that the stock ST is near the edge of daily driver and is almost a performance/weekend car. I like that. This is the first car I've owned that I have not allowed friends and family to try out. The car is very pleasing and competent. I had the common CEL warning, dealer reset and it has not come back. I suspect the car is sensitive to non "top tier" fuel. A second brief CEL after running 91 octane budget gas. Retank with Shell and light disappeared. Car has required no additional service other than oil changes. Brakes and tires wear evenly - a good sign - and still good. Recommended car.

My mom used to be a car salesperson, and when looking to purchase a new car, I followed most of her rules, which happily led me to this purchase. Those rules are: 1. Never by new. (I’ve never owned a new car and wanted that experience, so I broke this rule) 2. Never buy a car that you haven’t already saved the money for, i.e. you either pay for the car in full or you have that money sitting in an account and choose to finance the car so you can use the car purchase as an opportunity to improve your credit score. (in my case, I paid for car in full up front) 3. Buy what you need, not what you want. (I made a compromise here… I wanted a truck, but I just needed a vehicle for a 100-mile round-trip daily commute to/from work, so I settled on a car--but picked one that packed at least a little punch). 4. This isn’t mom’s rule, but one I heard from a former pastor: buy a vehicle that costs less than $20K and gets more than 20 MPG. (my ST cost a little under $21K so I didn’t break this rule by much). The result was a Ford Focus ST with the base model “ST1” package (which I think is now referred to as 400A, or something like that). This car is amazing. I’m not a big sports/performance car person, so I’m not too crazy on the exterior styling, but the interior is perfect. Yes, it would be nice to have a touchscreen, moonroof, heated steering wheel, leather seats, etc. But at the end of the day, I really don’t need any of those things. What’s great about the ST as well is that regardless of the trim level, you still get the same great engine, transmission, and brakes, all of which I consider the most important part of a car (behind it’s safety), so that made choosing the base model easy to cope with. I would be lying if I said that I haven’t had second thoughts about buying a Subaru WRX, F150, Mustang, or even the RS (which I could pay for, but it would put a serious dent into my savings). But at the end of the day, that would mean spending at least $8K more for a vehicle that has things I don’t need. The ST has lots of power, torque, great braking action, is incredibly safe, and has lots of cargo room. If you’re like me, and just drive yourself or you and someone else, and don’t have much of a need for a larger vehicle, and enjoy driving a manual transmission car, I think the ST could be perfect for you. Sometimes I do need a truck, but that’s maybe once, twice a year. I came to terms that as much as I want one, it would be WAY cheaper to just rent one when I need it (or better yet, borrow a friend’s). I have found that my friends with trucks are happy to swap vehicles for a day, too (assuming they know how to drive a manual). At the end of the day, the ST base model is a wonderful compromise. It’s not the fastest, largest, tech-iest out there… but it’s still a blast to drive! It’s human nature that we’ll always want something better. I could have bought an RS, but once Ford comes out with the Focus refresh sometime in 2018-2019 (assuming the RS will be refreshed with the rest of the Focus lineup), then naturally I would likely want the new one. Balance what you need with what you enjoy driving, don’t spend a crazy amount of money, and accept that you’ll never have the latest and greatest vehicle, and you’ll be extremely happy with whatever you get (especially if it’s an ST).

My husband also felt the bolster was too narrow/stiff in the passenger seat. He is 200 lbs, 6 ft, with skinny hips!. Nice other wise, if you are a small person, with thin hips. Pass

I owned a '15 Focus ST for 3 days before I ended up returning it to the dealer. The return was not because of the model, but because of the dealer. I bought it used and upon having a little time in the car, I noticed that it was not as advertised. The dealer's initial response was to be very hands off, and so I exercised my option to return. All that being said, the FoST is FaST, feels glued, and loves to run. Not even much of a step down from my Tdi in terms of interior. Only thing I can really knock the car itself for is the way that the fuel gauge is constantly and quickly dropping... which in the end may say more about my priorities in a car than the ST. In the end I got myself into a FiST and a big old grin.

I'm a student and Cross Country athlete, and this is the perfect car for me. It gets decent gas mileage to keep costs below my paycheck, each of my passengers has their own door, and it can carry all of our shoes, clothes, backpacks, etc. The car isn't crazy fast like a Mustang, but the turbo gives it plenty of power to be a blast to drive. The suspension is stiff and sporty, and body roll is minimal in spirited driving on backroads. I find the car to look very sharp (I have shadow black) and I smile every morning when I hop in, and when I look back at it as I walk away. Even on the coldest of days, I know it'll fire right up. This is perfect for a car guy who kind of wants a Mustang, but is willing to give up some performance for two additional doors, more cargo space, and much better gas mileage. I can't see myself getting rid of it, and she's my baby now. Plus, it's getting harder and harder to find something with a manual transmission.

I have always loved the sporty look of the Focus ST but never thought of owning one, I had owned 5 litre Mustangs in the past, now my kids are driving lol… After doing some research I decided to look into purchasing one and found a 2016 ST 3 with only 25,000 for just under $20,000. Since November 2021, some three months later it’s won me over. What a blast to drive, quick, responsive, solid on dry and ice covered roads-with winter tires of course. Great to drive as a daily, and when you want to drop the hammer, it’s all there. Thinking of purchasing an RS but maybe in the summer. This Focus ST 3, the package I have is extremely comfortable, great touch screen, Navi, heated seats, wheel ect is very well equipped for the cold winters here in Ontario, Canada. Mirrors, views, no blind spots, very clean driving experience. Safe and confident. Can’t wait till the warm weather arrives to drive it then. Great bang for you buck if your looking for a hatchback, being a previous Toyota Matrix owner-not even close!!! Beware if your on a fuel budget though, she sucks the high end fuel - high octane only - if you drive it hard, some 300-350 km to a full tank at $70.00 to fill up 40 litres, I get close to 500 km on a full tank on long highway drives, but I don’t use it as my primary vehicle. Turbo, sport technology guages, beautifully laid out interior, one can see that all of the best Ford engineers from Europe and North America have come together to produce a truly unique small sports car that appears far more expensive then it’s light suggested price tag.. Kudos Ford, you keep getting better!!! Happy Driving Greg

This car is a lot of Fun to drive. I had Acuras, Hondas, Toyota in the past. I wanted something more fun to drive. Not just a reliable box. I found it. It may not be the most luxurious car (ST3 mine is pretty loaded) But it will bring an smile to your face every time your drive it. I am happy with my purchase after 9,000 miles and 6 months of ownership. If you want a good economy vehicle get a Prius. If you want to feel alive when you drive , get this car. !

Owning the car for about 6 months I have alot to say. Overall the car is awesome, I would 100% recommend if the RS aint for you. However, no car is perfect. The car rattles and feels really no put togethet but a strut bar and sway bars did the trick. Its too quiet stock and didnt want something crazy loud so a axle back exhaust did the trick, cut the res out itll really wake up. I recommend changing the rear motor mount when you get the chance, especially if you drive it hard. The fuel pump should probably be switched as well if you brought it privately, better safe than sorry, the car takes premium not regular, its a turbocharged engine people. However no other problems. Great car, practical, perfect for a college student much better than a gti in my personal opinion. Its good on gas when you arent ripping it. If youre looking for a hatch id say this is it chief.

Took everything I threw at it and loved it. Multiple track days and daily driving. Modded and tuned for more than 50k miles and never left me stranded. Best car I've ever owned

Pretty much all the reviews are spot on. For me I have one complaint that could be m fault, I haven't heard anyone else having this problem. Basically there have been times when I have to shift after a stop I have accidentally engaged the gear into reverse. Other than that I love the car and I working on a hack to link Siri or Alexa to my car. I'm thinking it might be easier to use Siri since I can link my IPhone to the Sync syst. An added bonus would be using the Apple Watch. How cool would it be to have the Siri sound like kit?

Car is nice. Idles rough and I had to buy a air vent cleaner kit to get the mildew smell out when you first turn the AC on. It is a fun little car.
