Used 2002 Ford Explorer Consumer Reviews
V8 Helps a Lot
Purchased the XLT with a V8 and towing package. Plenty of low end power and smooth acceleration. Leather interior is very comfortable and 3rd row seating is a definite plus for loading kids and friends at the same time.
2002 Explorer is a Lemon
After 3 attempts at transmission repair and 4 times having the rear rack and pinion replaced we finally had to file under the lemon law. The engine would rev high and then lurch into gear, and eventually O/D light flashes and would completely loose 2nd and 5th gears. Ford supposedly flew field engineer down but still unable to get it resolved. NO more Fords for me!

Love my Explorer
One of the deciding factors when choosing this car was the 3rd back seat. Although it does not offer a lot of leg room and requires a bit of climbing to get into, it is perfect for kids. The kids can easily climb in the back and the adults can sit in the rear seat confortably. This vehicle has proven to be very reliable. I have experienced a couple of hiccups thoough, in the past 27 months or so. I had to replace a switch for the passenger side window (it fell in the door), the a/c adaptor plugs aren't working but I have not fixed yet, things like this. But nothing major.

Big Ol Lemon
Bought the 02 XLT used and within a month started to experience serious problems. Dealer (Scott McNamara) indicated it went through a detailed inspection. Have replaced both rear wheel bearings, front left wheel bearing. On a long road trip experienced loud noises and two independed dealers found problems with front and rear stabalizer bars, front and rear control arms, serious leak from oil pan and others, car was not drivable. Our cost would have been a total of $3000, over two months. Dealer did not back up this vehicle so we dumped it. Will never buy another Ford product. Quality is not job one with them.
