We bought this truck used with just over 40k on the odo. Now have over 88k and it hasn't been too bad. Biggest problem is the 4x4 low stopped working. I haven't spent the money to get it fixed because I never use low range 4x4. Considering this was a first year redesign, it hasn't been too bad. The power is great. The third row is a nice feature. There is plenty of storage. I bought an 07 SportTrac because I was so happy with this Explorer. That being said, I think we are going to get a Honda Minivan next year because we need more space and the reliability/resale value/gas mileage is so much better. Overall, the 02 Explorer is a great family vehicle, just needs some minor tweaks.

This vehicle is wonderful. The V8 has a lot of power for a vehicle the size of an Explorer.. Could get better gas mileage.. The interior trim is much nicer than previous EB models. The ride is spectacular.. The new suspension is all that I read about and more.. Havn't taken it offroad yet, but I'm looking forward to it..

This was the 2nd Explorer that I had owned. Traded my 2000 in because I liked the body style of the newer Explorers. Never had any issues with the old one. I absolutely loved the 2002 Explorer, at first! It is a piece of crap. Looks and rides nice but replaced numerous wheel bearings and the transmission was clunking and shifting so hard at around 25 mph that my kids kept asking me what I was doing. CD player stopped ejecting CDs. Driver side window motor needed replaced. Leg room in back for 3rd row seat very cramped. If this vehicle would have held up I would have kept it forever. Got rid of it before we had to replace the transmission. Got a Chevy Tahoe, which I LOVE!

I just bought it and can't believe all the negative feedback here. I think it is an excellent car and an excellent value. I love driving it and think that Ford has done an excellent job with the 2002.

Have 4300 miles on an XLT model. The whole family loves it. This truck has made Ford customers out of us.
