LOVE IT !!!
I just purchased my 5th Ford Explorer, I now am the proud owner of a 2002 Eddie Bauer edition Explorer. The Quality is exactly what I expect from FORD and again I am not dissapointed, The redesign of the vehicle is beautiful and the ride leaves me without words. I have not had to bring any of my vehicles in to Ford for any major reasons and do not expect to see any problems with this one either.
Rattle
The only problem after owning the vehicle for 7-8 months is that there is a rattle coming from the front end. It's not like it jumps out and hits you, but at speeds below 30 MPH and somewhat rough roads it really starts to sing. It reminds of when my radial bushing starts to go on my 91' Explorer. What scares me is taking it to the dealer to only have them say that they can't hear or feel it.

Only had two problems
Great SUV. love the 4x4. use it all the time. Only had 2 problems. 1) Passenger side external rear wheel bearing went out. $400 fix. 2) Brake pedal position sensor. $200 fix. No problems with tranny. I do pull a 1000 pound utility trailer a few times a month. I spend the time and money to have all maintenance done on schedule. I have about 117,000 miles on my 2002 explorer xlt. Take care of it and it will take care of you.
Switched to a Chevy
This was the 2nd Explorer that I had owned. Traded my 2000 in because I liked the body style of the newer Explorers. Never had any issues with the old one. I absolutely loved the 2002 Explorer, at first! It is a piece of crap. Looks and rides nice but replaced numerous wheel bearings and the transmission was clunking and shifting so hard at around 25 mph that my kids kept asking me what I was doing. CD player stopped ejecting CDs. Driver side window motor needed replaced. Leg room in back for 3rd row seat very cramped. If this vehicle would have held up I would have kept it forever. Got rid of it before we had to replace the transmission. Got a Chevy Tahoe, which I LOVE!
Awesome!! -- Explorer Limited
I must admit that I was definitely NOT a Ford Explorer fan at all -- but that all changed when I stepped inside a sleek, black Ford Explorer Limited that stole my heart, while making it race at the same time. The '02 Explorer is just a wholly new animal, inside and out and it shows, and feels. The ride is great, the looks are fantastic, and I have already begun to neglect my Lincoln LS and Audi A4 for the Explorer. It is a truly great car with excellent room and the soul of a luxury car. I have only had it for a short time but I can give it my highest recommendation without reservation (HAPPY TRAILS!!)
