Amazing, Dependable, & HIGH miles

I love my 2006 Ford Escape Limited. It has been an amazing car. I currently have 279k miles on it and it is still extremely dependable. I drive it daily on a 76 mile round-trip commute to work, and trust it fully to get me there. I have family that lives 3 hours away and drive it to visit them without worry. I’ve had very few problems with it, with my most “major” repair costing only in the $300 range. It has only had to be towed once when the alternator went out at around 170k miles. People think I am crazy when I say that I plan to drive it up to 300k miles before I get rid of it. As I am approaching the 300k mark, I am now thinking I may keep it longer. If you’d have told me 10 years ago I would consider a a daily commute on a car over 300k miles (or even over 200k), I would have thought you were crazy. But why get rid of such a good, dependable car? When the day comes that I do get another car, I plan to go with a Ford Escape. Update July 2021: So my car has now crossed the 300K mark. Still running well, so I am going to keep driving it. Like my brother-in-law said about it just a few days ago, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

I bought this in 2007 for work with 20,000 miles. It is now 2011 and has over 145,000 miles on it with no problems. Its been a great SUV and my dogs love the sun roof.

The Escape was not exactly what I thought I wanted in 2006 but it's what I could afford, and as it turned out it was and still exactly what I needed. 8 years and 142,000 miles later the only repair I have had to make outside of regular maintanance was replace a sticky brake caliper, most likely a manufacturing defect. Furthermore, I bought a front wheel drive as we lived in VA, not knowing we would be moving to the heart of the Rockies in CO. With good tires and smart driving, this car has handled incredibly adverse snow conditions. My only complaint is that the seat is sooo uncomfortable. I am not big, 5'6", 130 lbs, but just NO leg support in this short seat.

"The Mad Max Road Warrior Tough Vehicle"

I normally do not write reviews on vehicles. An aerospace engineering by trade, I have worked on craft that have to really impress me, but none so much as this vehicle. Second owner, I bought my 2006 Ford Escape in 2007. It had 56k miles, and in 2017 has 215k. 2 battery replacements (understandable over 10 years), and tires, but other than fluid changes this thing has never disappointment. In 2015 I went to Death Valley, California to work on rockets, and that is where my appreciation really flourished. Death Valley is in the Mojave Desert, and an extremely harsh environment in ways. Despite the sand, the heat, the cold, the wind (oh my goodness the wind......saw it knock down a child...no joke), and even sitting for 20 months.....the beast started up and drove like a champ. I have no plans to ever sell or get rid of this vehicle. They just do not quit. They make "Ford Tough" far more than a gimmicky marketing slogan. The security forces and desert patrols all use them too. You will not make a mistake buying this vehicle. It's like a "Firefly" off of the series by Whedon. No flash, sure, but the damn things just will not quit. I'd rather spend a few grand on a replacement engine (though it doesn't need even extra oil after 10 years and 215k miles between changes) or transmission than EVER getting rid of this baby. Zombie apocalypse? No problem. Mad Max Thunderdome? It's nearly lived through it. I tested rockets far out in Mojave and this was my vehicle of choice. Won't even vacuum out the Mojave sand....I think it has EARNED it.

I purchased my 06' Escape about 8 months ago and couldn't be more pleased. A car salesman friend of mine let me drive an automatic trans. xls and it was OK. When I drove the 5 speed manual though....look out! Very peppy / zippy. I weigh a little over 200 lbs. and this thing will accelerate very nicely in 5th gear from about 40 mph. Zippy to the degree that you don't have to downshift. It seems that 152hp 4cyl is plenty for the Escape. Of course if you have something against shifting then you want the xlt auto 6cyl. Some have complained that the exhaust sounds a bit unrefined- hogwash. Engine compartment well layed out- very easy to get at the oil filter for you do it yoursefers. Very happy.
